NBN Discussion

We just got it last week. Speed went down to a third of what it was but has mysteriously doubled since so still only 2/3 of what we had. They also managed to lose our main phone line which somehow diverts to my old business phone voicemail. Will we all end up getting big data plans on our phones/tablets and connected via mobile?

ACCC to launch review into NBN.

THE consumer watchdog has launched an inquiry into the standard of service NBN Co is giving retailers and consumers as complaints about the network continue to rise.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will hold a public inquiry that will also consider whether regulation is required to improve consumers’ experience.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said what happens at wholesale level on the NBN can flow through to the retail level and affect customer experience.

“We are very concerned about the high number of complaints from consumers around poor customer experiences, particularly in relation to customers connecting to NBN services and having faults repaired,” Mr Sims said.

An NBN reseller just told me that when we get connected second half of next year, we will probably get FTTK instead of FTTN and should get a speed of 7 or 8 Mbps! I'm so excited I might go outside and start digging the trench myself.

7 or 8 Mbps?? Better get to get a pigeon!:(

Son is moving to NBN in his suburb. All going well till he got this message on his phone:
NBN order updates: Your nbn order continues to be affected by an unexpected technical issue. Belong IT teams are working through remediation as priority. We will provide a further update in 7 business days if not rectified sooner.
Now they have no internet at all. :(
We have just been advised that it's at least 6 months before we are to get anything from NBN. Nearby is currently getting it and our ADSL is now awful.

Thanks NBN.

I think it took a couple of days to get sorted but they are back on line. Our VDSL (ex Transact in the ACT) is much faster than many NBN speeds so we won’t want it here anytime soon. :)

This was alluded to in the early days of this thread and that article has reference but physical connection to premises will likely be a thing of the past for most of the Oz population within a few years.

5G (even 4G) will see to that.

The NBN as a physical connection (fibre/copper) to the premises will be basically redundant.

5G as a technology has not been finalised yet but it appears to be using frequency bands in the 20-30Ghz. This means that the transmission range will be extremely short so many more Multiple bases stations will be needed everywhere.
The big winners in NSW will be the new lease holders of electricity poles. It will be on lots of buildings street corners electricity poles etc etc.

However these base stations will need backhaul. It’s here that the bottle neck will be found unless fibre is brought closer to each base station.

My daughter has given TPG the boot, ADSL+ was 5Mbps at best.

>40Mbps is what she gets with 4G ... It's normally > 50Mbps. She tethers at home.

It's nett cheaper even though her monthly usage is 35-50 GB per month.

This thread is five and a half years old; looking back a lot has changed but then again much has not.

excellent piece of public infrastructure
I am prepared to state this 'excellent ... infrastructure' providing physical connection to premises will be basically redundant by the time this thread has doubled in age.

Parts of this "excellent infrastructure"'s will likely be relegated to providing connection to base stations.

Just checked and we are usually around 50mps with our VSDL. Son's NBN is only about 16mps. When the NBN finally arrives here we may be lucky and have fibre to the building as the apartment building was wired when built. Funnily our connection point is the Realm Hotel next door whereas the adjacent apartment building has one in its basement.
