NBN Discussion

My husband has been complaining that every day, about noon, the internet crashes numerous times for about an hour and yep, happened both Sat and Sun like clockwork.

He phoned them today to make a complaint, his call is important to them blah blah blah.

Make sure he got a reference number and then make a complaint to TIO. They suddenly become very helpful after that.

Hubby got a return call and advised that a technician will be on site today, between the hours of 9am and 5pm. NBN shut down again between noon and 1pm on both Monday and Tuesday this week.

You know that scene in the Griswalds National Lampoon Christmas movie? Where the wife keeps turning the Christmas house lights off/on by going into the garage? Im sure someone at Telstra/NBN/whatever is doing the same at lunch time in my area, maybe using the sandwich toaster.

It's interesting that there seems to be an upswing in very negative reporting about the NBN on the media. The government now seems to be distancing itself from something that, because it's been so terribly knobbled, is unlikely to ever be profitable or saleable. And the CEO seems to think that he deserves a tax on other forms of internet, apparently because they are unfair competition. The bad public perception is pretty much an NBN 'own goal', caused by their decision to abandon so many problem installs (many of which aren't really) in the quest to reach a mythical finish line as quickly as possible.

I made sure that all of my neighbours knew of the problems I had with the NBN earlier in the year. I was only able to get things sorted after gaining the support of a couple of politicians. But, the fact that NBN thought that treating people so badly was okay, has not been forgotten....as far as I know, nobody else in the street has even attempted to get a connection! Good PR...

Sumthing Sumthing Cheaper Quicker.

Liberal campaign material before the 2013 election. Oh what a time to be alive.

Think the upswing was due to the Four Corners (rather bland report on Monday night) and NBN trying to get aglhead of it.

The only thing this has proved is that governments of either persuasion once again underestimate the complexity, cost and timeframe of major projects (from telco to public transport to roads).

4G is already a quicker solution for low data users in areas of good coverage, and 5G will probably see even more people able to cut the cord

Technician finally showed up (we were given between 9am and 5pm) and declares that there is absolutely nothing wrong. Why am I not surprised.

Sound like some automated software they are doing.

After I download quite a bit, my ISP intentionally throttles (slows) down my speed. I turn off the modem for 5 minutes and I am back at coughpy ADSL till their software figures out I powered down.

Filipino call centre pretends they don't do it. Can't switch my ISP yet, because NBN(TM) is coming sometime in 6-18 months.

Could this be good news?
Received today a generic flyer " NBN construction commencing in your area"
Our area was scheduled for second half of next year according to "the site". Will be Interesting to see how quickly work begins but I'm not holding my breath.

No. Because we've had daily problems since we got the NBN and we had to change plans and pay more per month for the privilege.

I've just had an NBN person (business liaison?) visit our business premises (western suburbs Melbourne) to discuss the imminent arrival of NBN scheduled for April-June 2018 but he said may be earlier.
Inter alia he said that our premises would be getting FTTP not the previously announced HFC. Cool!

This would be most welcome, as since the rain earlier this week, this has been our speed:

I've seen faster carrier pigeons !
So far Exetel have handballed to Optus have handballed to Telstra leading to acute inaction.

FTTP. Wow. Presumably the copper must be in very bad condition that they think it's worth spending the money for FTTP.

WOW @coriander, I thought that 3Mbps on a good day was bad!
Hah, who needs NBN if we could only have 3Mbps all the time! My highest over past 12 mths has been 3.5Mbps

I think it is more a case the poles can't handle the thicker cables hence Fibre being cheaper.
There's two fat black cables on the poles which run along the other side of our busy road - I figure both Optus and Telstra. Maybe they don't want to string across the road.

As I understand it would require new poles that can handle the thicker heavy cables, as NBN has bought Telstra and Optus HFC.

Be still my beating heart.........

Man in a Van pulled up out front this afternoon, lifted the pit cover outside and fiddled about inside. I was in consult so couldn't get out to see what he/they were doing - he/they left after 10-15minutes.. Just checked now and there's lots of muddy detritus on the nature strip and gutter which I've hosed down carefully so as not to (re)fill the pit.

But wow look at my speed now - and it's supposedly peak time (7.00pm weekday) -never ever seen this high speed before at work (home is a standard 93/38 24/7). Does it get better than this? <g!>
