NBN Discussion

I don't know the car speed analogy is all that close. More a case of you want a car capable of 200 kph (for our unrestricted freeways), you're promised one that will do 300, but on delivery find that it's really 150 kph, and will be randomly contended back to walking pace. It will only have the speed reduced to that speed when you want to go somewhere.

Yeah have to agree in Oz the CVC issues are like the Gruen program on ABC showed. And NBN logo very spotty.

The recent NBN advertisement shows a rocket taking off with NBN satellite onboard what it fails to show is that it does not arrive at its destination but reaches the nearest Node ( :)o_O)
Elon Musk’s Space X bloopers video is probably appropriate...

I think the analogy should be, is that New Zealand is making mainly thousands (maybe more?) of the high speed train lines where the train can travel upto at 1000 kph for a low fee or toll right to your doorstep.

Whereas Australia is making fewer high speed train lines with some stopping at streets (25kph), roads (50kph), freeways (100kph) and high speed train stopping either to your doorstep (FTTP) or a short stroll to your home (FTTC) with speeds up to 1000kph.

Australia's problem, is the Car and Trains are charged high fees/tolls to use their trains or cars but in some can't cases are out in the bush or a Labour seat and might only get a limited amount of streets, roads and freeways with little high speed trains. In addition the freeways have higher tolls then roads and streets but due to the poor network, speeds in the morning afternoon peak are horrendous across whole street network.

Even those with the high speed trains, they can only afford the slower train 25kph, 50kph 100kph due to high ticket prices.

Well a thumbs up for Aussie Broadband.Phone and internet connection went dead a couple of minutes before 0900.SMS from ABB at 0920 saying service is active and it was.Speeds close to the 25/10.Test shows 23.93/4.98

I wonder if Bill Morrow was ever questioned why he keeps hiring Karina Keisler?

Wow. NBN Co boss Bill Morrow has actually hired his charmless PR at Vodafone, Karina Keisler , to do the very same on the taxpayer dime.

You may remember that in June last year Keisler issued a Vodafone statement which was four paragraphs and 127 words, verbatim, of a press release she helped prepare while working at Telstra in 2011.

Once caught out, her rather avant garde communications strategy was to argue that it isn’t plagiarism if you’re copying yourself.

Morrow puts butt on the line with Keisler appointment

Karina has acquired more than 20 years’ knowledge in the industry, advising some of Australia’s highest profile CEOs, including Telstra and Vodafone.

Karina specialises in managing communication strategies for complex organisations and reputation recovery. At nbn, she is responsible for elevating the conversation above the politics and getting Australians excited about a connected future.

Connecting to the NBN was a breeze.Trying to cancel our ADSL service with Commander and our landlines with Telstra was much more difficult.

NBN Federal inquiry.

A joint federal inquiry into the NBN wants a drastic overhaul of the project, including an independent audit, better information, and a “minimum” of fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) in the rest of the fixed-line footprint.

The year-long inquiry, which is chaired by government MP Sussan Ley, quietly published its 210-page opus in the shadows of the upcoming Labour Day long weekend. (pdf)

The government members said that any changes would have to be paid for, either by internet users in higher retail prices or by the taxpayer as more funds were sought.

They also said that “on all measures, Bill Morrow and the rest of the executive team at nbn have done a phenomenal job in turning the company around”.

Let me translate that. Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull stuffed up the NBN and when it costs another 30-50 billions to fix Tony Abbott's and Malcolm Turnbull's mess, it is the Australians voters fault. Oh and Bill Morrow gets another 5 million bonus for being a psychopath sycophant.

Won't cost anything if it is never fixed.

Oh and Bill Morrow gets another 5 million bonus for being a psychopath sycophant.

Oh, the normal CEO model....

Notice the wifi service is provided by Vodafone.

Makes me wonder if it is 4G+ in disguise?

ADSL dying and NBN FW now 2020.

- so with the Officeworks $19 Optus 4G USB modem I was able to get
Ping: 15-20ms
D: 10-15Mbps
U:5-12Mbps
This is on 700Mhz Band (but 10Mhz bandwidth). There is a 2300Mhz band with a much larger bandwidth(=higher speed)
These numbers are for outdoor and also indoor in a built in cupboard.
3 bar signal strength
I wonder if I can get better speeds if I put up an external roof antenna which would be 12m off ground level

Optus has a data only sim plan $70 for 140GB. Optus 4GPlus now available from a tower 1.5km away.
The datacsim is shareable so I can buy 2, put one in drawer, and use one for 280Gb.

This will tie me over until NBN FW or may even replace it

Not NBN I know, but I love the way hotels restrict what should be decent connections. The Marriott in Kensington..2 meg/sec. It was MUCH faster a couple of years ago.

I know some people who rent out rooms and apartments on the Adriatic coast and they often regal me with stories of guests who seemed intent downloading at the maximum rate for their entire stay.
