NBN Discussion

NBN is being rolled out in our building in Sydney CBD this month. I'm not sure if it'll be FTTP though. It'll be good riddance to ADSL.

Very likely to be FTTB which should let you get 100Mbs as long as your internal cabling is decent and you're under 500M from the node they install.

Generally, copper cabling from the MDF to your residence is going to be much better quality than what's out in the street as it's
a. newer; and
b. is out of the elements and isn't handled or moved much.

At home we are 100m from the MDF to our access point (and then probably another 10-15m to the modem by the time the cable snakes its way in walls and ceilings) and we get 93/38 on TPG's FTTB, even at 6-10pm weekdays. Brilliant compared to work where it just took 2 minutes to upload the above speedtest image.

Someone not happy with the NBN. Don't know about the profile pic.

Dark purple dots are FTTP premises
Pink dots are Fixed Wireless FW premises

There are numerous similar examples. Enterprising premises with FTTP could do a deal with their adjacent FW neighbours!

Jindy friend now says NBN is too fast at 48/14Mbps - he is going back to non speed boost plan. As he is in a townhouse of 3 and he is the middle one number 2, the alternative is to share the speed boosted NBN with number 1,3.

I just got NBN to the basement FTTB in Melbourne CBD. Not sure about diving in however! Especially after reading this all! And Whatmeworry posted about a happy nbn customer. Then they offer plans which you have to pay for speed boost even if your paying for 4000 G with Telstra truely not sure who to go with ?

However on a positive note, my ADSL 2plus is running the best it's ever been when compared over the last 20-21 months with Telstra.

Surely things will improved with the nbn?

In the situation where NBN has arrived to my apartment building via FTTB. Means I have about 80-70 meters of copper to my premises.

I am now with Telstra ADSL 2+, should I move on to another provider for nbn or Stay with Telstra on ADSL or upgrade ( sic) because it's more reliable and avoids contention CVC issues with congestion.
Done a lot of reading, hard to make a good choice.

Even if I took out the best bundle with Telstra with Foxtel they still give the minimum speed.(4000g) with international phone calls.

Telstra provide the slowest speeds ( as standard) with their bundles the CIS: For information on the speeds available please visit telstra.com/speeds. A Very Fast Speed Boost is available for an additional $20 per month on the nbn network or a Super Fast Speed Boost for an additional $20 per month for Cable or $30 per month on the nbn network (except on nbn Fixed Wireless). If you exceed your monthly data allowance your broadband speed will slow to 256kbps until the next month....blah blah blah...

What does this mean? : Mobile Bundle Bonus You’ll receive the Mobile Bundle Bonus on up to four eligible mobiles on the same Single Bill as your plan. It includes a $50 additional allowance for calls, MMS and SMS to standard Australian numbers per month on your eligible mobile service. Excludes use overseas. Unused allowance expires each month.....is that on prepaid or does business phone count too? This eligible bull**** gets me everytime..probably means nothing!

Then this BullSheet : Additional charges apply for other call types. These are the main charges for calls under your bundle: • calls to 13 numbers – 40¢ per call (except for free calls to 13 2200, 13 2000, 13 2203, 13 2999, 13 3933 and 13 7663) not only are you paying top dollar for 140$ Telstra Home Internet Bundle + Foxtel Entertainment 2017 you still get hit simply calling a 13 help number WTF.

The last nail in the coffin is the speed no mention of it anywhere therefore searched the Telstra site and got this: Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Building (FTTB)
nbnTM: 25 (Fast) lol lol lol lol
25Mbps (download) and 5Mbps (upload)

Telstra, in particular, seem to be quite deceptive with regard to their advertising. They will not mention an actual speed anywhere. Perhaps their bills should be treated the same way...pay up to whatever amount you like.

Have a look at aussiebroadband. Australian call centres, and they are the only ISP making their bandwidth (CVC) data available.

And as another example of the stupidity of the NBN rollout...about a km down the road from us there is a new estate under construction. It only consists of two blocks of houses. There are no houses built yet....they've only just finished the roads. One block will have FTTP, half of the next will be FTTN, and the other half satellite.

have been reading very positive things re Aussiebroadband. It was originally a whirlpool special but I believe they are now offering a no strings attached 1 month trial to everyone

Iinet are not endearing themselves to me. I got home from a few days away to find my ADSL 2+ service had been suspended. I rang them to get it sorted and was told that they had done a preauthorisation on my CC and it had failed. This was four days before the direct debit was due - when my card would have been fine.

Got reconnected and the CSR could not understand why I was annoyed they had cut me off *before* my bill was due, just in case I didn't pay.

So I took the opportunity to ask when my contract was up - "Last month" was the reply. "Hmmm" I said. :) I don't think I will taking up their offer to switch to nbn.

I am getting about 12/1Mbps with them. Just checked Telstra 4G: 120/30Mbps

Answer seems obvious? :)

Agree Telstra's plans are weird.

They don't offer 12/1 (which isn't really broadband, apart from their phone only plans) but they don't actually advertise this.

Instead their base plans are 25/5 which look even more expensive than Telstra's normal to competitors 12/1.

The speed boosts are to 50/20 and 100/40.

Belong (which is owned by Telstra) does offer 12/1 and makes things a lot clearer

Physical max of ADSL is 24/1 but wired services are more for quantity over speed - try getting a plan for 500GB on 4G.

What sort of NBN are you getting??
The current Whirlpool favourites seem to be AussieBB and Telecube with SkyMesh having recent issues. MyRepublic while a great price for 100/40 seems to have widespread congestion issues, as do Optus.

You might have to ask them to connect you to their retention team.
