New AFF Website

Not sure about the general forums, but any Trip Reports will likely be substantially larger given photos can now be 5Mb each - previously they were compressed to about 100k each
I'm not opening trip reports on phone and the data usage just keeps increasing.

Has something changed.I have not gone to the vanilla version but tonight the text including quotes is darker and much easier to read.I like it.

I tried, during my 5 hour lunch with my elder son today, to post a pic of the first (of several) bottles of wine from my iPhone 7.

Massive fail - message says 'file too large' or words to that effect. Gave up. Never had that problem before.

Maybe you're using it more..
I cant imagine avatars add much
Not using more. I was reading more threads with old version. It takes a while to get used to new version.

I have just clicked on New Posts and opened 3 threads including this one and data usage is 2MB already. That's too high. I can easily get through 100 threads in a day.

Opened another 2 threads and clicked on 2 forums and marked posts read and another 2MBs gone. At this rate my 1GB monthly allowance will be gone in half the time.

The old forum was definitely not that heavy in data usage.

One thing I'm missing is seeing the Thread title at the top of each post. Though this comes down to how I access Unread Posts in threads I'm watching.

Yes, I've been confused by this as well. I have multiple tabs opened and sometimes I lose track of which thread I am on. I've been glancing at my browser menu bar and url more often in the last few days and now I've realised why.

I would find it helpful if the thread title was returned to the post.

Thank you @kevrosmith for pointing this out.

For those who think there's too much white space: I found a small improvement by going to the top right of the page and clicking on my avatar to open the menu--> Preferences --> uncheck the box that says "Show people's signatures with their messages". See below.

It only saves a little bit of white space, but if this knowledge contributes to AFF harmony I'll be delighted.

I inspected a few pages, and the lack of image compression does seem to be inflating page size (@samh004, @Admin)
eg. on page 23 of this thread, the two screenshots (PNG) are running 200k each, and the one in Capt Halidays post on pg. 24 is 280k (its a 2048x1536 image)
In addition the floating 'wing' element in the header (that only seems to display on mobile, not desktop) is another 80k.

By wing element I refer to this behind the AFF logo. It doesn't show up on my desktop views:

These can quickly add up on mobile.

The page itself is fairly efficient at 40k, and most avatars are 3-4k (although x20 each page it can add up)

They are adding up very quickly.

I suspect vBulletin was largely text based where as XenForo is nore graphical.

Not really. We had avatars before and they were of similar size.

With the new forum, there have probably been more screenshots than normal, particularly in this thread, plus the odd photo here and there isn't compressed.

Now obviously using an App has the advantage of stripping some of the graphical elements.

That said I see no reason for this forum to be serving up print quality photos - it wastes server storage and users and AFF bandwidth. I'd think compressing to the equivalent of a 640/800 pixel width would be sensible.

This post in QF Meals is an interesting one.
The thumbnail which shows in my mobile is 13k versus 900k for the full image.
Qantas Domestic Business Class meals

I assume this image was uploaded in thumbnail format (which I think should be the only allowed format - albeit possibly with consideration of a slightly larger thumbnail)

Got some interesting e-mails overnight; I'm sure admin and sam004 are already aware, but anyway :) :

Yes - apologies for that. After some investigation, it turns out to have been sent out by the wiki import program.
(We are still trying to fix the wiki and run a new wiki import overnight.)

This was the note we received from the Wiki developer:

"The second email is indeed a VaultWiki email, sent by the importer to let users know that they are already automatically unsubscribed, because previously sent unsubscribe links would no longer work after the import. This works around the CAN-SPAM requirement that unsubscribe links work for at least 30 days from date of sending, a requirement which unfortunately provides no mechanism for site migrations. Did you receive the email like that with nothing filled out? I have not been able to duplicate that output on my end; it is always filled out for me."

Shouldn't happen again :(

such faded quoting text is ridiculous no reason for it.

Then there's something wrong with XenForo.

I just loaded the AFF home page and clicked on New Posts and that was 2MB. Most people won't care but some will care as they will be constrained by data usage.

Why have page banners looking different this looks a hell of a lot better than forum pages.

That post actually highlights something that has been happening both before and after the migration. That view is provided when a member has uploaded an image, but forgot to attach it/insert it into their post. The software knows they uploaded it, so it includes it at the bottom of the post. It is not actually the "thumbnail" option.

Indeed. Used to happen when I uploaded a jpg then changed my mind and thought I'd deleted it. Shows up as a tiny jpg. I always thought that was a thumbnail but having posted thumbnails on this thread they are plenty large enough.

I reckon this is a good example of a XenForo forum. Easy to read quoted text.

Ski Forum

Can you point to a thread - so we don't have to go searching for an example of what you mean?
