New Amex statement credits

I was wondering this too as so far they seem to have the same functionality in that appears both can be used anywhere.

Not quite true - the XS $4.95 cards are EFTPOS cards so can be used anywhere EFTPOS is accepted

The RED $2.95 are supposedly only accepted by stores located inside Westfield shopping centres (actually not all of them accept them, but the majority do) but it turns out they also work with chains that have some stores inside Westfield shopping centres when you used them with stores of the same chain located outside Westfield (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, Aldi etc).

Ultimately the XS $4.95 are more flexible - you can used them at your local corner store, all petrol stations, to pay for council rates, etc - as long as the store / business accept EFTPOS payments.

There is a thread that hasn't been active since 2014 about this. Australia Post stopped accepting XS cards at Westfield's request - with much of this activity directed towards ATO spend.

Aus Post stopped XS cards altogether? Even for say normal purchases?

Used 9 cards at Harvey Norman yesterday with no complaints from
anyone. Wasn't electrical or Vpay/GC that probably made a difference.

6 cards left for a TV hopefully a similar experience.

The westfield gift card can only be used at a store within a westfields shopping centre. if you want to use it at a store in one then save some money and buy it

the by Westifelds card ($4.95 activation) is an eftpos card and can be used anywhere eftpos is accepted, so is much more flexible. well forth the $2 extra for the added flexibility.

My poor wife is about to kill me. I had to make her up a rule list for all the different credit cards and what she has to use on which transaction a few months ago. Since I have started doing these Amex credits last month, everything has gone out the window. We have gotten to the point where on Monday morning, we are running through a list of all the offers and whether she needs to shop at any of those places this week. Considering we are approaching $3000 in credits for the last 6 weeks, just on stuff we were going to spend anyway and still got QF and Myer to go, it is well worth the effort. I need to additional Amex cards to fund the bigger credits though :)

A big thanks to all the peeps on here for the excellent advice.

Funny little story. SWMBO had to buy presents for 2 of the kids' secret Santa's, the other day. As the recipients were girls, she thought something nice from Bodyshop. Luckily she rang before she bought the 2x $19.95 soap packs. I said make it $50, Pay with the Amex and we get $15 credit. Turns out they had spend $60, get $10 off, spend $70, get $20 off, become a member and spend $80 and get $30 off. In the end she bought 3 x $19.95 soap packs + 1 x $24.95 soap pack for $84.90 less the $30 off = $54.90 and then $15 Amex credit brought it to $39.90 which is what she was going to spend anyway.

When she got home, I pointed out she had 4 Amex's and could have done the other 3 cards as well. At that point she started throwing soap at me :)

Bought more than 5 figures worth of gift cards within the last 2 months. Have had to explain to the wife numerous times how much we're saving... :)

Not entirely true - the Red 2.95 Westfield Gift Card also works with major retail chains (e.g. Wollies, Coles, Aldi) that happen to have some of their stores located within Westfield shopping centres - the card is working is all locations including those located outside Westfield. See comments on OzBargain for Woollies / Coles / Aldi, I'm sure this will also be the case for many others chains, (e.g. JB?) probably due to the fact they use a single payment processing backend ;)

Picked up a single $300 vPay voucher at HN in Brisbane last week. The cashier mentioned that they possibly had expired and showed me a stack of refunded purchases. Anyhow, she tried a few times and 5mins later I walked out with my voucher.

Received the email instantly and credit has posted on my statement. Voucher also activated without any issues.

I didn't see any signs in regards to Amex and I think the cashier didn't even notice what I paid with.

I will update in case the credit gets reversed, I had to give my name before purchasing (maybe in case of refund?).

This isn't correct. The Westfield card can be used outside Westfield at many stores. It just isn't supposed to do this.

I have scanned throu this thread but can't work out the big deal with the GC's can someone explain please

In short, the GCs can be used at places that don't take Amex (or incur a surcharge).
When you can also buy them at a discount with Amex, that's a doubly good thing.
Occasionally loopholes arise that enable people to convert giftcards into cash but they are usually transient

This is a sign that the world is evolving!

I too have resorted to a manual and yes I did get the finger the other day. My latest solution is that every time my wife 'wins' with a credit I cash her back right then and there so she sees the tangible benefit. The statement credit isn't instant enough but a pineapple in the hand she connects to!
