+1.
Why don't they sell it at a markdown?

I'm guessing that with the number of upgrades vs paid in J they are already doing that. Logically I would expect those few seats to be filled with ODU's or couples.

I don't like it either, but seat width and pitch is more of a concern than the return to having middle seats.

, there is this point "Fleet – A330 and B787 transferable between brands". My understanding is that in order to do this they will be making the configs as similar as possible. For example, the JQi and the Domestic QF config of the 787 will have 3-3-3 seating in economy.

It is my assumption that the config has come about by trying to standardise configs between JQ and QF to make it easier to swap planes between the two.

There is a conundrum there. It may suit QF/JQ to be able to easily transfer planes from one fleet to the other, but isn't it, to some degree, contrary to having different brands in the first place? I realise there are other differences between QF and JQ but it seems to blend the two brands somewhat rather than actually have two different brands. What then, is the point?

I suspect, if this 'easily transfer' thing eventuates then QF will only use the
Configuration (both a330 and 787) domestically whilst what is deemed suitable for QF J domestically will do for JQ J internationally....

As per the current arrangement (quasi) with the a330....

Interesting article. A few comments

The seat pitch in business class has also been reduced from 127cm on the 767s to between 89cm and 94cm on the Airbuses, according to SeatGuru.com.

I don't believe domestic config 767's have a seat pitch of 127cm.

The changes were mapped when Qantas was still certain of its monopoly in business class and after research showed that in-flight entertainment was the key factor for passengers.

If the business pasengers in the research preferred improvoed entertainment options, then they got that. Be careful what you ask for!!

uhoh! Markdown! You might get Karen, Sharon & Darren in there! Or you might hear them as Kaz, Shaz & Daz!

"Oh Kaz look there's chooina"

Everyone has been asking for improved entertainment :)

Next year QF will begin replacing it's 737 fleet with full AVOD equipped planes (a la the Jetconnect fleet). They will be taking delivery of about 20 new next gen 73H's, so roughly 1 every two weeks. Add that to two more A330's (minimum) and more A380's and more next gen q400's they will be very very busy goods receipting all their new toys!

I have it confirmed from a DJ insider also that cough2air is officially goneski...Some old virgins are still fighting hard to keep it... Lol. Apparently they lost a bit of money on that one. So how will DJ top the QF next gen AVOD, which is excellent? Looking forward to seeing!!

Can't help but think that the new DJ product will be a sister of its Virgin America product with the 3 class cabin (First/Main cabin select/Main cabin). One would assume that DJ IFE would be "Red" as seen on their V Australia product, of which I was very underwhelmed with. Mainly american productions, no documentaries ect.

I do like the Ikea doco that I saw on the QF AVOD the other day....

Depending where you are in the economic cycle, you find that one brand is firing better than the other. In the peaks of the cycle you want to have capacity to extract premium prices. In the lows of the cycle you want to have capacity at the low end of the market. Presumably, the idea is to let them move capacity around more readily.

Why don't they sell it at a markdown?

You are obviously not an airline exec. The way they will promote it is more likely:

"and for only $150 extra (per leg, plus fuel fines, CC fee and nonrefundable GST) you can get one of our aisle or window seats..."

Good question and l'm sure that in a few months we'll all get a look.

That would be interesting. A 3 Class cabin for DOM travel? I also suspect that they (DJ) might have to redo the status tiers and add another level (like QF WP+PG) than just having DJ Silver and Gold.

...maximise interchangeability between JQ and QF...

I get it now!

At the flick of a switch brand logos and signage rotate from orange star to red roo and vice versa (a la 007 revolving license plates!).

Brilliant

Well I just got off the phone from QF Customer support. They called me after I lodged a complaint about their "new" J seats.

She lady said they had received a large number of complaints and they would be changing the cabins back to a 2-2-2 arrangement. The temporary fix is they are blocking the middle seats out.

She also said they are designing a new seat to replace the current one. Let's see what they come up with. And lets hope they are a bit wider!

You can see from the seat map at expertflyer.com (or the seat map displayed after you book by which time its too late )

You can still select the middle seat though for trips later this month....
Just to resurrect this thread - I'm heading to Perth the week after next for work, J both ways.

QF581 4/4 SYD-PER is a 2-2-2 config.
QF568 7/4 (redeye) PER-SYD on the way back is a 2-3-2 config, and the centre seats are selectable.

Here's hoping I can get some sleep in these new seats.

I'm on 2 x 332's in June for MEL-PER-MEL, and both are showing as 2-3-2. I was hoping QF would have gotten rid of these by now (seeing as they announced pretty quickly that it was going shortly after they bought them in). From what I could see, I was also able to allocate the middle seat (which I didn't, I took a B seat).

Yeah penny has dropped here as well mate........I think it is the dominant Death star think in the Qantas Group!

I was on JQ7 a few days ago, and was flying *Class on the brand new VH-EBQ. No prizes for guessing which configure this plane came in... Still, for a 7.5 hr flight, costing me roughly $800aud return, I'm not complaining.

I'm on a 2-2-2 today and a 2-3-2 tomorrow.

Actually excited to see and fly the 2-3-2 before it goes (weird I know, have a thing about flying all J configs in the QF fleet).

Will not sit in the middle seat though :)
