New Lounge in CBR

Poked my nose in there today and saw some VA managers arriving on a flight. Terminal does look suddenly much more prepared and quite sharp!

Is there a map of the new terminal? From what I read, when you arrive to check-in you can see straight out to the tarmac... but wouldn't this mean you couldn't go from the Virgin to Qantas sections without leaving the secure area and re-clearing security? Or can you only see the tarmac in the distance, but not approach?

I think you have hit the nail on the head - visible in the near distance as you enter, but physically after security.

Cool, didn't seem to be well explained and no terminal maps that I can find so I wasn't sure... plus doesn't make too little sense. I mean, with the removal of ATA on both airlines, save for the high echelons (who don't really need convenience), you wouldn't be on one side of the terminal in a lounge or otherwise, and depart from the other side.

Such as, while I don't know the names of any cafes in the BNE Virgin terminal, if I did I doubt I'd grab a coffee there if my gate was 18... it's a long way!

Don't know about that (view of the tarmac). Essentially there is a central atrium, security will be relocated to the central part rather than being on the side as it currently is. Don't know where exactly security will be, but if dead centre this will 'effect' the view, but if it doesn't then the floor level is the same as the secure concourse so I reckon the 'view' will be obscured by people and glass walls (I know that sounds odd) anyway.

As for the layout Qantas checkin is to the right of the atrium where it currently is, Virgin will be to the left in the new bit. Once past security there is just one secure area, again Qantas to the right, Virgin to the left and the old terminal in the middle. This will be torn down and two additional gates installed. This will be easy due to the way the orginal and new terminals were joined in the first place, basicly rip it down, fill the hold with glass and install the bridges onto the piers that have already been built.

The rep from CBR Airport told me that the opening for Virgin Lounge and majority of terminal area is confirmed for next Wednesday (though didn't specify what 'majority' meant). A grand opening of the whole shebang will happen later in the year. By the way the email was worded, it sounded like gates will be opened...but I know this seems unlikely at this stage...

Looking at the live webcam, I guess majority means new atrium, new Virgin check-in, larger baggage hall and some gates. Clearly there is still a bit a hole in the end of the terminal (which if it mirrors the other end will be the access to the tarmac for turbo props) and a bridge or two missing from the new part. They also have two missing bridges blocked by the original terminal. So really I would say 60% gates, 100% new lounges and retail and a bit to do outside, especially with taxi's.

I suspect the lounge won't be open to the public until around midday.

The lounge is open. Though it has a slight unfinished look! First impression is okay. May sound minor but the toilets are dark and cramped. No hand dryer just a box of tissues. But the view is fantastic.Sorry but having issues uploading pic. Will work on it.
