New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

In addition, I saw a WP (emphasis on the W) in the J lounge last week with the tag attached to his cabin bag?!? WTF? That is not what these are for people...

I have a tag attached to my carry on roller bag for two main reasons:

1) I check it from time to time (I can fit 3+ days worth of clothes in there, and in those cases it's probably > 10KG let alone 7KG). Also, from time to time I will do same day multi-city bookings - if I don't need my bag in one particular city I'll check it through to the next city to save wheeling it around.

2) For identification purposes. For those times when the bag is checked, and also because I want to know at a glance if this is mine - not so much of a problem with my current bag (I haven't seen anyone else with one), but with my previous carry on bag (Smartpack) someone else had an identical one in the same luggage bin on more than one occasion.

Given that I only have one normal suitcase and the carry on bag, the two tags seem like a perfect match so I just leave it on rather than having to remember to put it on when I want to check it.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Certainly no "DWKWIA" involved - heck, I was using my QP bag tags even after I made WP until one broke and I swapped it.

So, before you jump to criticise people - there are reasons for a person having tags on the bag they have in the lounge with them - for starters being that it may not always be in the lounge with them :)

Not sure what else they could do with the look of the platinum one. Maybe make it out of metal? Or make it taste like candy? One of those travel puzzles with the ball inside? Inbuilt taser?

Considering WP's are the only ones who can take two bags soon, I wish they'd issue us with at least one spare one. Eventually may ring up and try to get a couple gold ones if they look nicer... saying the GF prefers them usually works.

Maybe he thought it was better than attaching to himself. Could be the new way to get into lounge, particularly international ones...

I have a glut of the old tags in every colour so will probably be putting them on any cabin bags I take, since there's always a slight chance of misplacement or theft. I usually do hide / tuck them in somewhere. They're not 'bling'.

Oh, and I still haven't received anything from QF, a week after my card expired. You would of hoped they could of prioritised the issuing of cards to oct 31st expiring memberships.

Fair enough

Just for me given the limited availability of NGCI. The old tags would probably do an equally good job. No need to rush out and put on the new tag is all.

OT With the weight of packing do you take extra shoes? I take 3 days of clothes and 3 meals and the most I've got to is 8.5kg. Or does that include a laptop, something I have in a separate bag.

Sometimes a pair of shoes, but otherwise toiletries, a few pairs of pants and enough shirts to change twice a day and other essentials.

The weight does include iPad (which I take out if checking) and associated chargers.

Note: I've never actually weighed it myself - that's just what has come up when getting it weighed at the airport so who knows if it's accurate.

And like you said, until NGCI gets more widely deployed (especially at my home airport) I'll probably just keep the tag inside and attach it when needed. The regular tag works quite well (and doesn't have my contact details on public display).

Ah, toiletries. That's what I don't have to carry as I leave them at my usual destination. That would push the weight up a bit. I also have only weighted my bags at the airport.

Yep saw one of those as well. Life is difficult for some people

I chuckle when I see them on laptop bags, still does not beat the reported sighting a few weeks back of a WP with their card on display in a conference badge holder.

Maybe it was a non-AFF, non-FT FF conference (if such a thing could possibly exist)? ;)

Are you referring to the Q tags or the old tags?

I have the old tags on my laptop bag - better there where they are less likely to get stolen and more likely to be used for the purpose of identifying me as the owner if the bag gets misplaced. I thought that's what they were for!

I might clarify, I chuckle at the thought that some people consider them suitable for check in at times, I know someone that did that who was a fellow employee when I worked for a large chip maker, the laptop never turned up at the other end!

I wonder how this will work? Do we insert our WP card into the machine to unlock the magic platinum tags? :)

That’s not a bad idea, though I doubt any WP would expect to pay for a replacement tag, so QF might get some bad press from such an idea. It would be useful for NB/QP/PS though, a bit of differentiation at the machine.

Maybe they’ll sell special designs too, make them look really unique for some people. Could be a way to justify the $50 price if there’s some arty design on the back.

Good point. I assumed that the tags supplied with the card would already have metadata such as QFF no, contact details, etc, prgrammed in, and that the only variables would be the flight details.

No, that’s what they’d do if they were a smart company (disregarding privacy concern issues and change of address that some might have).

That is seriously sad ! :D

I fully intend to attach mine to my bag when it arrives, if you haven’t seen my backpack, it’s adorned with a lot of different tags that I’ve picked up in my travels. I still need an old PS, SG and WP tag to join my QC tags though, just for fun :)

Haha that is funny... and apologies to those who multi-purpose their carry-ons... the bag in question however was the size of a brief case and would likely never be checked in. Enough said.

Considering the size of the damn tags, they may dwarf the modern laptop bag, adding to the entertainment of other pax like us chuckling to ourselves in the J lounge ;)

And for the OT note, taking one pair of shoes for a weekend is a sacrifice I am willing to make in order to avoid the uncertainty and time delays of the QF baggage system.

Well there was one conference where I was wearing business attire, i.e. pants, and white Merrill shoes. Slightly embarrassing. But the shoes were leather and it was Darwin. ;)

I might have been that W...

The reverse of the tag has space for information for identifying the owner - the same way that the old tags have details inside. I have put a new tag on a small bag primarily as a test at the moment - and I have to say that I much prefer the old style tag (and I also prefer the AA bag tags as well). They are much less bulky.

Given I never check bags domestically and rarely check bags int'l (might do next for an India visit) - I dont see these tags ever being used for their intended purpose.

Mine were at home waiting for me when I got in today. I wonder whether they would have increased the likelihood of my bags arriving in today?

I'm glad to see that they will replace Priority tagged baggage too.. I haven't had much luck with AA tagging it so.

Why :?: They have no other use at this point for most people.

That is seriously sad ! :D
Why again. One of mine is on my briefcase but more as a place to store it rather than losing it.
Quite a few people in the SYD F lounge and on my JQ3 flight yesterday had the new tags (types various) on their carry on.

Who cares :?: :(

Each to their own. I personally think they are a fairly large, coughbersome tag which won't add any information to my bags that isn't already there. When I need them for NGCI I will put them on. Sweeping generalisations aside there will always be people who like displaying the next new thing to all and sundry. Apologies to anyone I've offended.
Actually just thought , I was probably one of those W 's having my iPad security screened in April, I'll crawl back to my swamp and hide ;)

You needn't have exposed yourself so, given the iPad has been acceptable for not removing from the start - though I've heard stories of others being forced to screen theirs separately, I've never come across this. More interesting will be whether or not the 11" MacBook Air gets that treatment, seeing as it's one of the first laptops to be cleared not to be removed by the TSA.

Another data point - Mrs Djf's tags arrived in the mail today, and she's more of a Level 1 WP (according to munitalP's grading system) who has been through SYD only once this year. So I'm not sure they're really doing that much prioritising by the number of visits through SYD / SYD T3, at least at WP level.

I still haven't received my new tags. I really haven't used SYD this membership year though... I think the only time I've used it was last week.

There was also a transit on the way to NZ about a month ago.

That much is certainly true. I really have no idea why Qantas decided they needed to be so big - an RFID chip could easily have been incorporated into the existing baggage tags.

OT, but I've gone through security with my iPad in my bag ~40 times in MEL, CBR, SYD, BNE, LAX, AUS, SFO, NAN (and any others I've forgotten).

I've only had to take it out twice. Once in CBR (out of lots of flights - as it's my home airport) and once in SYD (T1).

For me the time saved by keeping it in my bag with a small chance of being pulled aside is worth more than pulling it out every time :)
