New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

If I ever receive any , I'm guessing I'll rarely use them. So they'll probably be consigned to a safe place lest they get damaged. No point in using them internationally.

With the ability to carry 2 x 7kg bags on-board domestically I almost never check luggage.

The last time was last month - Golf Clubs, the time before that was golf clubs in February 2009, and oh, yes, back in 2007 I checked golf clubs ...

So the useful information buried in this thread is as follows :-

  • These tags are only designed for domestic travel through selected airports
  • Selected should read "select". Only Perth and Sydney this year.
  • They replace the usual bag tags so are part of the move to self-service
That's all folks. The rest of the posts comprise of "look at me and look at my new tags" and "look at those bankers who have put them on their carry-on/wrists/iPad/chihuahua".

So sad.

No need to be rude, the schedule for NGCI delivery was very up in the air and everyone wanted to know what they looked like. So sorry to have clogged a thread with photos of something you don’t want to see.

Another data point - Mrs Djf's tags arrived in the mail today, and she's more of a Level 1 WP (according to munitalP's grading system) who has been through SYD only once this year. So I'm not sure they're really doing that much prioritising by the number of visits through SYD / SYD T3, at least at WP level.

When I called, expecting that I wouldn’t get my tags till next year per the email (early 2011), they mentioned they were sending out a second batch and my tags were already on the way, so I think they’re ramping up to everyone. I also know of at least one QP member who is expecting tags, and they weren’t meant to be shipping till 2011 either.

That much is certainly true. I really have no idea why Qantas decided they needed to be so big - an RFID chip could easily have been incorporated into the existing baggage tags.

I have a theory, but don’t have any technical experience in this so am asking for help here. Would a bigger surface help broadcast (I know it’s not powered) the RFID information when travelling through the internals of the airport? I have a season pass in NZ that uses RFID technology and I need to almost press myself against the scanner to get onto the lift, while this is much bigger, so perhaps it can be read from afar, which could be useful!

I don't think Moody's post was rude. Although I think the posts that show the new tags are fine, but the sub-thread on the pretentiousness of their use (Moody's second point) was probably bigger than it deserved to be.

Fair cop.

I was perhaps a bit under the collar about trawling through 27 pages of threads and still having to go to the Qantas web site to find out the facts. That shouldn't happen guys!

^^ I don't get it. Why shouldn't it happen? If you want the facts - go to the source. If you want discussion - go to discussion boards.

It could be said that you did get the facts given the title of this thread - next gen tags have arrived. People have listed when their tags arrived what other facts do you expect based on the topic?

Tried the Next Gen check-in in SYD last night. System couldn't retrieve my booking so I had to go to a counter for a manual check-in.

Had about 30+ QF staff in high-vis vests standing around watching the system and watching about 6 QF staff assisting passengers.

Sounds likes Q at their best!

Received my package yesterday. :D

I think the tags look quite good. (...considering the dreaded Marc Newson is behind them!!)

The new WP card is definitely an improvement over the old one.

First flight is this Sunday....won't be able to test the NGCI but will see how durable they are.

My partner made silver about 2 months ago.
He received the standard silver card 3 weeks ago, then yesterday got the NGCI ones ... Lol

Sorry to Moody, perhaps rude wasn’t the right word, though I’m still lost as to what word I was searching for ;)

Received my pack this morning. And here’s a photo. :p

I would imagine they were training them. If they can see how it’s done, they’ll be better able to help others. Perhaps they’re speeding up the rollout? /wishful thinking.

Gosh - I thought I could see a bag under all those tags somewhere :D

At least nobody is going to mistake it !

Your new QP Silver Checked baggage allowance will be used up before you pack anything in the bag ;)

Nice! Congrats on making PS by the way, I've been watching your ever-increasing LTSC tally, and it was great to see it tick over early thanks to the lowered threshold.

I must say, in that photo it looks identical to the WP tag but for the red logo. Really need to see them side by side to determine if the colour is actually different at all, or if it's just the logo.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Bit difficult for the baggage to be prioritised with so little difference in tags.
BTW congrats Sam on PS, I have a spare WP ordinary tag if you want one for the collection

I don’t checkin my backpack though, I’d use an Antler case if I was checking anything in, but still want to try using the tag in an outside pocket to protect it :p

Haha yeah, I tried something different, as working out a percentage just seemed too tricky, though I realise it’s actually quite easy :p I should hit just over 900 by the end of the year too, but wont be anywhere close to Platinum unfortunately :(

I was going to say the Silver tag looked to be lighter, and the Platinum tag darker, but I’m not so sure anymore, it’s too close to call. Of course, on the other hand, if you flip them over mine has a Ruby disc, yours will have an Emerald one, pretty easy to tell them apart that way ;)

:D Thanks.

Had selected seats for all flights immediately after I noticed my new status last month.

As for the tag, that’d be really cool. I was hoping I’d get a SG tag at the end of the year, though may just get a new NGCI tag now, but shall call them as soon as my status comes through and ask if they can send an old tag out. As for the WP tag, trippin_the_rift had previously offered one, as apparently all WP’s when asking for more get sent a bucket load, so I don’t mind when or where I get one from, but after that, it’ll be PS that’s tricky, as I wasn’t given any on account of my QP membership.

At least anyone will be able to pick me out in a lounge easily. Since the yellow FT tag helped me out in a bar in Melbourne I’ve just been adding more and more :)

Yeah... QF should have done a bit better with colour difference... unless it's going to auto sort based on the RFI reading... which i doubt...
