New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

I guess it depends how powerful the RFID chips are in them. Although it wouldn’t be as noticeable, perhaps the tag could go in a zippered outer pocket and be read that way?

Good point actually. Someone willing to try on the bag injectors in PER? :)

Assuming that works, and that a baggage handler will eventually wonder where the tag is, you could also stick something to the outside to sort of say "aim scanning here" or "NGCI tag located here" with crosshairs or a bullseye. :p

Do you honestly think they haven't been put through the ringer in testing... Try a bit of positivity!

Agree with pauly7, they are strong peeps, feels like they are made out of the same stuff taxis use to tie down the boot for all those AFF's travelers using up their max luggage allowance ;-p

Agreed, be interesting to see how it goes in practice, but these feels pretty solid.

Philby79, stop posting already and go and enjoy the F lounge while you can! ;)

Very interesting.
In my innocence I wonder why they need to be so big?

are the baggage tags coloured differently for the various tiers?

Yep - you can see them here:

Register your interest to purchase Q Bag Tags

On the reverse, they have space for your details, a bar code and serial number, and the oneworld logo with the appropriate corresponding colour for your oneworld tier.

As for the cards, a nice touch is that the personal FF details are in a silver, reflective text (as is the Q chip); not as nice as the old embossed tags, but certainly much nicer looking that the existing white text on the printed cards.

Sydney based SG here, didn't participate in the trail but DID get the tags today (they are kinda big actually)! Well built through, and the stretchy attachment bit is solid :)

Requalified in January, Oct 31 expiry - no PER Trial.

Will check when home, but can use current one for SYD F/L tomorrow.

Hope mine are waiting for me when I get home.

Of course, if they are basing it on "travel patterns through NGCI airports", I mightn't be getting mine in a hurry. Although I was included in the original NGCI trial (i.e. supplied with an Q-chip enabled card), I didn't end up using it once.

Question is.. will they still continue to hand out the old hand written WP bag tags as well??

I hope so as I want some when I get there in December

You can write your details by hand on these too - so I'm not sure there's any benefit to having the old tags as well (would be nice though, I agree).

Only as I often travel with carry on only so it is nice to have tags on it! ;)

Considering I got my old card today but am travelling through SYD in December I'm going to call them mid-November and see if they'll send me a NGCI Silver kit. Though I'm fully prepared for them to say Silver cards aren't being printed until next year.

I wonder what the kit will look like for other tiers.

The WP package was a little elaborate; after receiving a similarly elaborate letter yesterday and for a moment thinking they were giving me a Hunt leather bag (only if I get a NAB QF CC!), I actually thought I was getting a couple of QF logo-embossed Moleskine diaries today. Will they share all that pizzazz with SGs and PSs, let alone QPs and NBs who pay for it?

I would guess the same package but in a different colour scheme. Black is Platinum, but Gold can be Gold and Silver, Silver.

NB’s might get a Brown package and Qantas Club members a Red colour as they are now?

Well look at the TSA page on what damage can occur when locks meet baggage belts. Also, think about how much damage occurs to the various plastic Qantas bag tags during transport on bags etc... So having the bag tag ripped off (or worse, having your zipper damaged) isn't outside the realms of possibility...

Mine arrived yesterday, QF FF year ends tomorrow - my thoughts...

Except the AFF tag on my carry on luggage, I don't use luggage tags. The idea and concept is great but if I am checking luggage, I allow a little longer at the airport and generally don't have to wait more than a few minutes. I am assured that my luggage is actually going to the same destination I am - until I have seen the new process in place, I don't believe its going to work all that well in certain areas. A case in point with me was I travelled BNE/MEL with an additional flight that evening to AKL. It took ALL my patience to finally convince the check in person (and the computer system that wanted to check me through) I didn't want to check through to ALK - I needed to go home first!

So, without human intervention, that would have been a lost cause and my luggage would have ended up in AKL.

I guess the time will come when there is no other option, but until then, I will still be lining up for baggage check.
