New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

If only our interstate politicians realised that once they exit immigration in Sydney the NZ'ers arriving under the bubble are effectively people in NSW. As long as the same controls apply as anyone who has been in NSW in the previous 14 days, then I'm not sure what the issue is, especially for states that have quarantine arrangements for people arriving from NSW. All that it means, is these people only have to go through 1x quarantine rather than 2!

The main issue is that they will be counted against the international arrivals caps for WA quarantine. So this week, you can knock off 25 for other people returning from overseas. Which may result in some having tickets cancelled...

Just heard that 24 New Zealanders arrived in Perth from Sydney and are now in quarantine! In addition to the ones who went to Melbourne. I would have thought there'd be checks in place to stop this happening.
I just feel it will give McGowan more reasons not to open our border up, if he can't trust "those eastern staters"

Premier McGowan, and Premier Andrews, the ones who have been jumping up and down, know full well, there was nothing stopping the NZ arrivals from on-travelling. Put another way - where was it written, gazetted, said that the arrivals from NZ (who could include Australians by the way) were forbidden to on-travel?

After they enter Australia at Sydney airport, they travel just as anyone else in NSW do.

I reckon the Premiers are either fools or knaves.

Edit: So as not to cross-post, see here for the Feds stating that the Victorians explicitly knew that the Kiwi arrivals might go on to Victoria.

Why? they are not international arrivals. They arrived domestically, from Sydney, counting against NSW international arrivals - can't have it twice! There might have been West Australians also on the same flights from NZ and onward to WA or Victoria. Where would they be counted?

Massive, immature beat-up by some Premiers.

WA residents still can’t return home can they unless deemed essential?
You would think that these Kiwis would be returned on the next flight to SYD.
As an Australian I’d be pretty filthy that I can’t enter WA from SA yet someone from NZ is allowed to

Me too. But I assume since they were allowed entry ( I’m not up on the specific arrival protocols of WA), it was not in any contravention of Premier McGiwan’s rules. If not, then send ‘em back, like any other traveler from NSW ( but not just because they were from NZ originally).

Well perhaps blame the WA government/public service/police. I would hazard a guess that they gave these NZ arrivals a G2G pass/exemption. Perhaps poor decision making in granting exemptions to enter WA???

I'm pretty sure, as an Australian residing overseas I can arrive in any state I can get a flight into (and not get bumped from), with two weeks quarantine. Federal governments decides whether I can or cannot enter Australia. Yet it is different within the country, for example South Australians in Victoria would in theory not be able to return to SA, even with Quarantine.

Such is the unity of the country! ;)

Why? They have entered Australia and many states now have free borders. But need to get pre approval first. And in SA it is just required to confirm that you haven't been in Victoria.

Scomo is MIA?
He knows it's a non story. As it was discussed in the Meetings that this could likely happen. Nothing to see here.

According to the ABC, no exemption to enter WA was granted and "The State Government is considering whether the New Zealand arrivals will be sent back, with that decision to be based on their personal circumstances."

Who normally polices whether someone has an exemption to enter WA? So if I was a Sydneysider and booked a ticket to travel to PER, but didn’t have an exemption where would I be stopped?

IMHO, these people who arrive in Sydney should be treated exactly the same as anyone in Sydney, from the moment they are landside. So they want to travel to PER? Subject to same rules as Sydneysiders. Want to travel to Melbourne, same rules as Sydneysiders (i.e. can).

No hysteria, no breast beating. No drama.

A bit unfair. Tasmania and other states have closed borders to other states.

Victoria didn't. That's a huge difference.

Especially considering what has happened in Victoria.

The NSW-NZ "bubble" effectively placed Victoria's international arrivals into the hands of NSW.

And the NT and SA ?

Yes, and what happened? They went into 2 weeks hotel quarantine.

No hysteria, no breast beating. No drama.

I trust @DC3 will get a chuckle out of that, too:cool:

I reckon the 55 Kiwis in Vic will a lot happier with their experience than the 5 Kiwis in Tassie subject to a 14 day quarantine at their own expense.

The 55 Kiwis in Vic have had to endure Grumpy Dan (well probably not as they were probably too busy catching up with loved ones to worry about watching the Vic Press Conference yesterday) and the evidently terrifying experience of someone calling them to advise them of the local restrictions.

Oh, for sure, but I (and others) haven't been talking about the pax, :).

Interestingly, when Tas opens its borders (finally!) in a few days, NSW is still not included in that. So the Tas govt, probably unwittingly, has it covered.

An update NZ. There is another case of covid in the community and there appears to be lots of confusion, distraction and a bit of "dont care any more" attitude.
We have had a weekend of elections and rugby. The weather was fine, everybody is out and about with only a few wearing masks and no social distancing. I have to admit I only logged on to the covid tracker for 2 shops over the weekend, as I forgot. The masses going into Bunnings didnt seem to be stopping at the door to check in, nor at the supermarket. Any contact tracking is going to be difficult.
For we have seen COVID, we have fought on the beaches, we have fought on the landing grounds, we have fought in the fields and in the streets. And we have won. Life has returned to normal. The elections over and the All Blacks have won.
But there is a small glitch. A marine electronics engineer has tested positive for Covid. He lives in Auckland and works for ports of Auckland who have a branch port in New Plymouth. He may have caught it on a ship that is now on the way to Brisbane, but there is no way to tell for certain. He has been having regular testing, got symptoms and had another test immediately and came back covid positive. He was staying at a motel in New Plymouth and then traveled back to his family in Auckland.
The ministry of health and the minister are saying nothing to see here, no issues, no problemo.
At then moment there is no indication of new covid restrictions. But it is a concern and shows again how quickly things can change.
And hypothetically, who would want to be the official in WA that let in a kiwi who was in the household of a newly detected case?
