Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Drank the last of our import concession excess last night at Urban Farmer steakhouse at The Nines in Portland. Have managed to whittle down the dozen to just six for the suitcase now to brink home,

This one was a beauty. Colene Clemens Victoria Pinot 2012. Colene Clemens Vineyards

From Prince of Pinot...

"94 points Wine Spectator: "Open-textured, expressive and precise, layering black cherry, clove, tea leaf and floral flavors on a gentle frame, gliding into a long and harmonious finish. Elegant and intense. Drink now through 2022."

Similar to the 2010 "Prominent in the blend for Colene Clemens’ 2010 Pinot Noir Victoria are lower-altitude sections of the estate vineyard that – in a fashion not uncommon in the Willamette Valley – unexpectedly have the thinner layer of top soil (here over a basalt base not far from the surface). Ripe, fresh dark cherry and purple plum and marrow-rich beef stock are mingled with pistachio oil as well as wreathed and infused with smoky black tea, bay laurel, sweetly-perfumed freesia, and heliotrope. There is positively glowing, vibratory as well as salivary gland-tugging intensity to the sustained finish of this polished, elegantly buoyant beauty. I suspect it will reward attention for at least the next dozen years. - David Schildknecht"

A few recent offerings:

Wine23May.jpg

First time I'd tried the Cherubino Fiano, drunk as an aperitif over about three nights. A good example that became softer and more quaffable after being open for a while.

The Pressing Matters 2010 Tas Pinot was a strange one. I had half the bottle one night last week and sealed the other half in a filled half-bottle. It was very vanilla-flavoured and almost sweet the first night to the point I did not really enjoy it. But the other half the next night had lost that overt perfume and was actually very good. The weirdness of wine!

The Riorret 2010 Pinot (spell that backwards ;) - that naming is a bit twee IMO) from the Mornington was pretty good.

The 2010 Ashton Hills Pinot (Adelaide Hills) was a cracker from this noted small producer.

The 2005 Maurice O'Shea Hunter Shiraz last night with a thick steak and JohnM's Ultimate Mushroom Sauce[SUP]TM[/SUP] was also a cracker. Deep, brooding and textural is the sort of terminology I think some wine scribes might use, with deep, soft tannins. Quite different from the richer, fruitier Barossa type.

All-in-all not a bad few nights' gargling :).

Love it all!!! Enjoy :)

Found this at Dan Murphys and it's a great Malbec. Unfortunately they only had 5 bottles but let me have it for the 6 bottle price. Definitely puts Mendoza on the wine places to visit for me.

Strong hints of spice, excellent wine!
Glad I grabbed a few bottles as part of the latest DM cellar clearance.

A 2004 Saltram No 1 Shiraz is sitting on the bench to be opened this evening with dinner.

The end to my evening last night. One I picked up from a BWS sale that then had another 30% off. A very nice dessert wine IMO

A rather unusual blend the Esk Valley wine, what was it like QF WP?

Quite nice - medium body and even Mrs QF WP liked it - so we bought another bottle for Sat night pre-dinner drinks. Was as good the second time around. Alas, none in the AKL NZ Lounge now, so had to settle for a Villa Maria Pinot Noir

Looks like the dog wants to go too ;):p.

Oops! I thought I'd cropped him out. He would be an ideal wine tour companion, doesn't drink, doesn't interrupt my long winded wine gibberish AND looks interested throughout. Alas, he doesn't drive and lacks decorum in the personal hygiene department.

Here we go. 2004 Saltram No 1 Shiraz.

Notes taken based on first glass with only about 10 minutes decanter time:

Expressive nose of raspberries and mulberries, old leather, damp leaves. Hints of aniseed and bramble. A really enticing Barossa like nose.

Silky palette with integrated tannins. Plenty of primary fruits with hints of mocha and aniseed. Acid well balanced.

This is a well made, quality wine. The word balanced comes to mind and even elegant for this style. Finishes medium plus and a great example of a Barossa Shiraz with some age. Has the guts to go many more years and should improve over the next 5 years or so. 91 points.

I'll try write up some notes.

I've also got some 06 and 10's in the cellar. Only a single bottle of the 04.

You obviously have a good eye as you've picked the best of the recent vintages;).
The 02 I drank recently was ticking all the boxes:).

I got black olives too for what it's worth.

Thanks for the report QF WP.
A bit OT, but does anybody use the Vivino app or similar?

Not Vivino but a friend's son created the Vinus app. Sort of like Shazam for music. You photograph the wine bottle label and get tasting notes, pricing and links where to purchase etc.
