Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Picked this up a couple of days ago from Dan's:

Notice the vintage ... First 2015 wine I've seen! Grapes would've only been picked a couple of months ago!

For Pinot Grigio this is ok though. Nice fresh wine? Taste? Not sure I would want to keep it long. Lay it down in the Australian way, for the afternoon.

I haven't actually drank it yet! It's for the weekend. Have drank previous vintages and enjoyed it. I just hope it has had enough time to settle down and doesn't have bottle shock! Like your saying!

Thanks for the report QF WP.
A bit OT, but does anybody use the Vivino app or similar?

love Vivino. a really fun app. I have the wildest profile - apparently 12% of 'my' wines are french champagnes

A little more exploration tonight. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it will not do that to JohnM.

Wendouree malbec.jpg

Half a bottle with JohnM's Slow-cooked Lamb Shanks[SUP]TM[/SUP].

Now, we all know that Wedouree has cult status (including no website - Gen Ys recoil -, no back label and no bar code on the label. Is this just old-fashioned or super-trendy, I ask? In this case, I think the former - but there are examples of the latter - and I can name at least one of them - initials WD for the other sceptics ;).)

Dr Google this wine and... nothing: zippo, zilch, SFA. Hmmnnn, what's going on .

OK, back to the beginning. I stumbled on this while rummaging the DM website, so thought I'd try one bottle bundled into a diverse order to make up a multiple of 6.

"What's the verdict?", I hear you cry. Hmmnnn, a new JohnM category needed: 'Interesting'. Translation: Not a bad wine but would I buy it again? - err, no (especially not at c. $80).

Hmmnn, out comes the sceptic JohnM (Nb. sceptical is NOT cynical, though the following may cause guffaws.) Does the producer unload on a highly commercial retail outlet like DM its 'remainders' and trade on the name to the uninitiated? (smacks wrist sharply.)

While it may have had elements of the nose of Malbec, it certainly did not have the flavour profile and texture of very good examples of same. I was expecting much, much more from this cult producer.

I'll hold the other half bottle until Friday night when PJM will, in usual fashion, demand "What else have you got?" [and she hasn't noticed yet :(:p] after the first bottle (I have my eye on a c. 2005 Shiraz at the moment ) with the dinner that I yet again prepare (in this case it will the re-heated lamb shanks to be even more tasty) is dusted and I'll open it.

A prodigious thirst seems to develop during the week of work (what's that .) She normally objects to Malbec; let's see if she'll pick this as Malbec (my bet is not - but neither would have I done blind.)

If that's the case, will I own up? Errr, do you lot think I'm crazy  - I can make up anything to suit .

Have a dozen Diana Madeline reds coming to extinguish some Woolies gift cards that were expiring. Better to have some reds than expired gift cards. Price pal was 6.15% so it was less from Dans than direct from Cullen's.

JohnM you just have to know what to get him to search.I bought some of these when visiting the winery in the 60s.I met the winemaker who was a character. So just google Roly Birks and up come some references-
Five Decades of Wendouree - The Wandering Palate

I know Wendouree has a huge reputation and searching will readily turn up something.

The point I was making was that a quick Google of, specifically, the 2011 Malbec turned up nothing - at least on the first page.

Not that the wine was bad, but it was far short of what the reputation of Wendouree (not to mention the price) would have led me to expect.

Towards the end of the glass I detected a slight antiseptic/bandaid taste so I began to wonder if it might be slightly Brett. tainted - but surely a maker of that reputation wouldn't let anything with Brett. go out.

Irrespective of that, it didn't have the fullness/plushness of the flavour + texture synergy that is the hallmark of classy Malbec. It was 13.5% alcohol, which is light for Malbec, so I'm also wondering whether it was not 100% Malbec, despite the label (Wine in Australia can be labelled a single variety as long as it is at least 85% that variety.) The absence of a descriptive back label does not help in deciphering what's going on.

It will be interesting to see what the other half (sealed up tight in a 375 mL bottle) is like. I think I'll open it tonight.

OK, folks, I know I'm starting to sound like a cracked record but here's another MARQ wine I tried for the first time tonight.

Again, I was impressed. A very 'clean' wine like they all seem to be, with a nice touch of differentiation that indicates to me that this guy really knows his stuff and can pitch to a contemporary market. His back label descriptions are not w@nk, either.

I had it with roasted chicken pieces and potato pieces with chorizo that had been roasted with some chicken wings the other night (ie. there was quite a lot of fattiness to keep things tasty) and roasted brussels sprouts. It worked a treat.

Quite acidic, but not weedy and weak like beaujolais can be - but also not an acid and tannin bomb. Cut through the fat nicely.

I think it would appeal to the person who's not into big reds but not into really light ones either. It seizes the middle ground with aplomb IMHO.

Ordered a mixed case to take to Fraser but alas, Aust Post didn't follow delivery instructions and the wine was returned to the post office. No card left! Looking forward to trying. Will post my thoughts when tasted.

I figured you must have missed getting it before you and your church choir group went away for a knitting weekend :p.

First white since the Willamette Valley ( not counting EK). Luscious Auckland Chardonnay. Lemons, white peaches, fresh ginger, hints of apple and minerality. Quite a long, citrusy finish.

Had it on QF1 the other day, nice drop!
