Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Nothing like few pre-dinner drinks to liven up the crew. Now that would be a great AFF pseudonym:D!

Fillets of Mangrove Jack caught on the ocean side of the Fraser Island, off Indian Head. Most peculiar!:cool:

You obviously have a good eye as you've picked the best of the recent vintages;).
The 02 I drank recently was ticking all the boxes:).

I got black olives too for what it's worth.

Precisely what I do. Given prices don't fluctuate in Australia based on vintage condition, I wont buy an inferior vintage. Having said that I won't rule a wine out purely based on vintage reputation either, as there are some gems to be had.

Did you get onto the recent VM deal for the 2010's? $50 if I recall.

Not where I purchased then 2010's from. Managed a slightly better deal elsewhere.

Thanks for the report QF WP.
A bit OT, but does anybody use the Vivino app or similar?

Yes to Vivino. I use cellar tracker at home but Vivino is more for on the go use Buzzard. I find it's handy to snap a pic of a bottle and bring up relevant data quickly. The feature that lets you scan an entire wine list is my favourite. However, it only identifies 60% or so of any given wine list for me. It works better with simple fonts and it seems the database has a way to go too.

Captain Haliday demonstrated this app to Thebossman and I at one of the DRW nights - from memory we selected a wine with good reviews that none of us had heard of - and it was a nice wine we enjoyed.

I went to a Tasmanian red wine tasting function in Hobart on the weekend ( about 64 on offer).

Top for me was a Malbec Merlot blend from Kilbowie, south of Hobart ( about half way between Sandfly and Margate, for the locals ). My own notes said ' zesty, will go great with Thai' . I bought a few bottles and opened one tonight, and I used an aerating pourer, as discovered on the Titanic cruise last month.

It seems to have toned it down quite a bit but still a very good drop.

Drank this with dinner on Saturday night:

One of my favourites! Lethbridge also make a great Riesling and I've read they make a good Chardonnay, but I haven't tried it ... Yet!

Several fantastic wineries around Geelong, including Lethbridge and Bannockburn.

Yes fun times but this fishing trip has one rule. No alcoholic drink until you have caught a legal sized fish:shock:. Nothing like team bonding!

You know where to send the invitation ;) :)

OK, folks, I know I'm starting to sound like a cracked record but here's another MARQ wine I tried for the first time tonight.

Again, I was impressed. A very 'clean' wine like they all seem to be, with a nice touch of differentiation that indicates to me that this guy really knows his stuff and can pitch to a contemporary market. His back label descriptions are not w@nk, either.

I had it with roasted chicken pieces and potato pieces with chorizo that had been roasted with some chicken wings the other night (ie. there was quite a lot of fattiness to keep things tasty) and roasted brussels sprouts. It worked a treat.

Quite acidic, but not weedy and weak like beaujolais can be - but also not an acid and tannin bomb. Cut through the fat nicely.

I think it would appeal to the person who's not into big reds but not into really light ones either. It seizes the middle ground with aplomb IMHO.

Seppelt 'Benno' Bendigo Shiraz 2006 tonight.

Very good cool climate fruity Shiraz. Opens up nicely after a few hours in the decanter.

This vinomofo offering is drinking beautifully. Hard to put into words but 'delicate' and 'ethereal' come to mind. Pinot-like in softness (check the colour) and texture, yet very focused. A great straight grenache, but would not cellar for too much longer.
