Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Last night is Sydney, Wozza organized a beauty, and there was not a bad wine here. There were however a few stunners, but I will leave serious notes to the others.....can't work out the picture add on from the phone yet, but a great selection was shared, and thoroughly enjoyed.

...and for something a bit different, at least label-wise, the 2006 Mollydooker Carnival of Love

This is one amazingly smooth Shiraz. The huge 16% alcohol can definitely still be tasted at the back of throat, but everything else is just velvety caramel. It's really hard to describe how smooth and non-fruity this wine is. I had a bottle a year ago, and bought some more just to see whether it was a one-off or not. I do think this is really in it's prime right now.

........wozza, please remind us what the dessert wines were, there was a west oz classic, and one from south oz........i have to cut to an Ozzie crawl song line to give you an idea of where I am........as the manly ferry cuts its' way to circular quay.......goodbye Syd den knee.....it was grand.

I think I have just about recovered from Wednesday night! So as I sat down with the family on the veranda - on this fine Summer's Evening in Sydney - to a lovely bowl of salmon linguini, I thought I should pay my wife's amazing cooking some due respect by pairing it with:

the Flametree Wines S.R.S. Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2014

Pic 1.jpgPic 2.jpg

I picked this up from myCellars at $49.95 a bottle (2014 Flametree SRS Chardonnay, Margaret River - myCellars.com.au) with the accolade of being Halliday's best Margaret River Chardonnay and 2nd best Chardonnay of 2015. Campbell Mattinson said the 'score was irrelevant' for this 'wonderful' wine.

I posted the following tasting note on Vivino:

https://www.vivino.com/wines/90168266

"Wow. That’s a super intriguing and complete 4.5 from me. Campbell Mattison said the ‘score was irrelevant’ for this Margaret River Chardonnay. Halliday agreed, awarding it the best Maggie Chardonnay and overall 2nd best Chardonnay of 2015. The fruit hails from the loamy gravel and clay soils of Wallcliffe on old vines taken from Block 20 Leeuwin Estate. It’s light, fresh and precise with intense white peach and pears, a touch of lime, and this unusual smoke diesel overtone. Length is long and fine. Amazing."

I ran out of room to describe how good this was. The nose had tropical fruits and that smokey diesel tone (Campbell Mattinson described it as a 'struck match scorch'). And the palate delivered white peaches, pears, lime, orange and that smokey diesel tone. It took you on an intriguing journey, leaving a fine lingering aftertaste.

It was so together that I am going back to buy another 4 more to try over the next 10 years. At $49.95 a bottle this is super premium stuff, and the top of my budget for a white wine. But it’s totally worth it in this case.

Just written a longer, light hearted blog on this wine, titled: Oh my Giddy Aunt!:

"Oh my Giddy Aunt – or at least she would be if she made it around to my place this evening! It’s not everyday you come across a wine that stops you in your tracks. That has you coming back for more because you can’t quite decipher all its flavours. What has you so excited ..."

which was more expensive?

About the same... lol

It was that good we had another today with lunch... this time in Tromso.

Don't be confused by the candle - it was around 2pm and pretty close to pitch dark outside.

Paired with fillet steak and Heston Blumenthal's thrice cooked chips. Yum!

Wine was lovely but having recently had the 03 Basket Press it paled a little in comparison..

At Botin in Madrid with chunks of pig and lamb.

70% Tempranillo and Graciano. Brilliant colour and soft spicy pleasant palate.

A balmy summer evening, sitting under the pergola watching a documentary on SBS, a BBQ, a bottle of Mike Press Sauvignon Blanc and a bottle of Penfolds 2009 Bin 28 (Mike Press used to be a wine maker at Penfolds), +1 and Munn the Cat at my side, what more could a person ask for?
