Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Had a old bottle of Haselgrove Bella Vigna McLaren Vale Shiraz 2008 laying around. It was really delicious. Very intense oak/cedar.
I can't seem to find them anymore. Can anyone recommend any wines with very intense oak/cedar taste?

Cheers!

I found some of the older Saltram Mamre Brook shiraz and cabernets would fit these characteristics very amiably, however anything 2010 and over will need your own assessments. I have quite a few in the 02 to 04 span tucked away when quite possibly Nigel was making them, but recently they have a change to a more oestrogenic type of grape fermentation process. Nevertheless, they showed good value out there.

Fairly intense nose of leather, mocha, dark chocolate, brambles, cloves and hints of dark berries. The nose is so intoxicating.

Palate is medium plus weight with beautifully balanced, acid and slightly chalky tannins. Generous fruit is still present. Really well integrated lush mouth-feel. Finishes medium plus.

Any hints or the mildest suggestion of Shiraz grapes in it, by any chance :p:p:mrgreen:.

Don't be silly. They don't grow Shiraz in SA :p

Actually, its quite interesting what they do. The winemaker picks out a few barrels of maturation of what he believes to be the better ones. They then age for further 30 months in barrel and add some Cabernet. Cellar door only. I said to MrsDaver6 that next time we are in Adelaide a visit to Clare will be in order.

That's a relief. I thought that it may have been - horror! - GMO saddle leather, fermented and matured in a - even bigger horror! - biodynamic and - total horror! - egg and passed off to the unsuspecting trendoids as wine :p:p:mrgreen::mrgreen:.

Seriously, though - it sounds good :).

Champagne TMA?? You know I only care if it has bubbles ;) :)
P.S. What are you watching???
Oh yes, started with a glass of DOM after takeoff. DXB-BNE was 'shocked' that they have dumped the DOM Rosè, preferred that to the regular 05. (Liked to 03, but not the 04/5s.) Had to have glass of Hennessy Paridis instead as a starter.
Will post wine list later.

Was watching The Martian. Very good I thought.

I described the wine that won the blind tasting at the recent AFF Wine Lovers Sydney Wine Tasting Meal as Nigella Lawson! Luckily the 11 people at the dinner were on their eleventh wine of the night! I blame Beefarmer - he was goading me for one of my wine flourishes, and I think I got a bit too carried away!!

Now. As I finished my latest blog on the Burge Family Winemakers Olive Hill SGM 2003 I am drinking this evening, I couldn't quite shake a Scarlett Johansson moniker for this wine! It was beautiful and liable to get you very drunk and in court! : https://2blokesintrouble.wordpress.com/2016/01/13/patience-is-a-virtue-i-should-practice-more/ (principally because it was so smooth and drinkable, even at 15% ABV).

As I recently posted on Vivino about this wine, it was - bang-for-buck - one of the standout wines of a recent vintage tasting I attended at Cellar Link: https://www.vivino.com/wines/9526957

At under $35 a bottle, this is pretty fine and nicely ageing wine. If you are after a quality, aged Red blend to add to your wine collection, and that is drinking so well now, then Katy [and her husband] (who shared a case with me) and I would really give this a thumbs up:

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

I have been quite bad at posting to this thread lately.

Here are a couple of recent ones that were nice.

Rockford "Moppa Springs" Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2006

Pipers Brook "Estate" Pinot Noir 2008

The Pipers Brook was one of the contenders for Wozza's meetup, but I picked something else, and they didn't even attend :( :(

I won't post the "something else" yet, just in case I bring it to a future meet up.

Don't be so bashful Penegal - I posted about my Tier 1 the month before on this thread and it won!

There is another Sydney Wine Lovers Meet Up coming. Hopefully in February. It is a very different theme this time though. It will be hosted by the very funny, and very knowledgeable, mhen if she is still keen. Mhen sat between Beefarmer and me, and she completely upstaged us with her wit, humour and cool stories. I think the next theme will be trying mhen's back vintage wines and having a good time catching up again.

I will post more on this and other upcoming events to the Wine Lovers Meet Up thread ...
