Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Woodlands make some fantastic wines. Probably my second or third fave WA winery after Cullen, etc

Wozza, don't get too excited by the unlabelled wine. It's made by students at the School of Agriculture Food and Wine, our future wine makers learning their trade.
I am however looking forward to your review.

We are slowly moving into my favourite part of the year in Australia. Red Wine Season :D :D :D

Enough of this colourful fruity garbage until next Summer... Time for some big reds.

I will try to be better at doing photos and reviews this year.

There's this lovely invention called an air-conditioner. It makes all year round red wine season :)

Hare's Chase Ironscraper Shiraz 2013.

"Wow. Sometimes you just know when a future star has just tickled your senses! So much so, this brand new Barossa Shiraz (with a dash of Cab Sauv) gets a rugged but elegant 4.2 from me.

It's the first wine released from the Hare's Chase Marananga Vineyard after the vines have come of age.

The bottle label describes a tough place, with ironstone bedrock, little rain and hares living amongst the vines. And at the winemaking helm is Peter Taylor (production manager for TWE!).

Langtons said $25 was 'phenomenal value' for this 'exceptional Shiraz'. Totally agree. Colour: impenetrable dark garnet. Nose: mulberries, white pepper and cedar oak. Palate: warm, elegant (meaty) mulberries and cranberries, peaking with a long soft spice and black pepper finish."

So I've just cracked my first bottle of Hare's Chase Ironscraper Shiraz, henceforth known as "Wozza’a Delight". A very delicate (there’s a word I never thought I’d use to describe a Barossa Shiraz) wine, almost tasting like a shiraz pinot blend, rather than the shiraz cabernet it is.

I rarely comment on the bouquet of wines, but Wozza’a Delight warrants an exception. The nose is something to behold, deeply aromatic, a rich harmony of berry, vanillin oak, cedar and the merest hint of aniseed. The wine itself is something of a chameleon. The initial attack on the palate promises sweet berry fruits, but that promise is quickly overwhelmed by a raft of surprisingly complex savoury flavours, replete with delicate spice, bitter mocha, sweet tobacco and gamey meaty notes that seem to linger forever. The tannins are ultra-fine and barely perceptible. The balance close to perfection.

This is the sort of wine where you want to savour every mouthful, and feel a real sense of loss at the ultimate but inevitable conclusion. Wozza’a Delight is a truly lovely and deeply satisfying wine. Everything I love in a wine and then some.

Thank you Wozza!

Friend from the country over tonight so a couple of nice wines.

nice white to start

Unbleievably wonderful red to go with the Ragú.

Went to Simon's tonight which Melbourne suburb dwellers may recognise as the iconic Peiking Duck restaurant in Box Hill South (intentional misspelling).

Being BYO I asked her ladyship to dig out an old Pinot.

Fantastic food and fantastic wine. Company was okay too.

The 2009 Tamar Ridge was on point and just beautiful to wash down the duck 3 ways.

2014 disgorged Rockford BS - sublime - opened a little early but will finish it with roast lamb. After the recent visit to Rockford I have not chilled it as much as my previous bottle and it makes a huge difference. (I wasn't planning on buying any on the trip but after having it as our welcome drink I changed my mind and grabbed some of the current release)

Nice red from the cellar to go with butterflied lamb on BBQ.

Initially on opening some tired notes but after 30 mins aeration and poured through aerator, just yum, lovely fruit, great depth, excellent drinking.

.. the Blackwell as always, solid and consistent, good to taste next to the Bishop, very similar build..both big and bold. The Cullen, initially picked blind as a cool climate Victorian Shiraz ........interesting blend Merlot,Petit Verdot and Malbec just a bit too angular.

Visited the winery in 2014 so decided to get one out tonight instead of the usual Pinot on Sunday night.

Still a youngster but very interesting.

"The 2010 Barolo wraps around the palate with plums, mocha, smoke, menthol, spices and new leather. This is an unusually dark, muscular style for a straight Barolo. The shoulders are broad, but at the same time, there is more than enough richness to balance the tannins. The 2010 should drink well pretty much upon release, as it is packed with fruit, supple in personality and full of near-term appeal. Altare sources fruit from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga for his Barolo." Drink 2015-2025 92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Very dark and rich. I get the menthol, new leather and nettles, maybe plumbs and coffee tastes.
