Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Another gift (I think from Katy or Alzoam - sorry guys, my brain is fried after such a massive working week). And this time it's a mof_ bargain legend that had me chucking the Parker First Growth 08 down the sink (too tannic, life's too short):

the Schild Estate Grenache, Mourvèdre, Shiraz 2013

{insert picture}

I have just posted the following tasting note:

2013 Schild Estate GMS Barossa Valley, Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley - CellarTracker

http://www.vivino.com/users/8818052/activities/99229207

"A light, smooth and nicely priced 92+/100 (3.7/5.0) from me. This Grenache (47), Mourvèdre (27) and Shiraz (26) blend hails from a 3 generation famIly run estate in the Barossa. Schild says it's a "homage to the great wines of the Southern Rhone but with a very Barossan accent".

The nose is white spirit and white pepper heady, leaving your nostrils lightly burning! But the palate is the real hero here, as the light-to-medium body works seamlessly to produce an easy drinking and pleasing wine of cherries, raspberries, red currants, and strong pepper, herbs and spice.

So easy to drink. And so well priced by VinoMofo for the experience."

Okay. So back to the drawing board on the Cab for the Sydney Wine Tasting Meal in May. Although I have shortlisted a 99 pointer! And am bidding on a (probably better tasting) 97 pointer ...!

In the meantime, thanks Katy / Alzoam * delete as appropriate. Much appreciated.

Very lovely cool climate Shiraz. Spice, long tannin, rich palate. At its peak.
"James Halliday96 Points

Deep colour, vibrant hue; deep and compelling levels of ripe black fruits, savoury spices and well handled toasty oak; the palate is unctuous and silky, with black and red fruits combining with silky fine-grained tannins expanding across the palate with true grace and harmony; long and luscious."

I agree, it is a lovely wine. It was so nice I was too blissed out last night to even post my tasting notes. Here they are for anyone interested:

Okay, I’m quickly turning into an ardent Fox Gordon fan. Hanna’s Swing is a young wine, but still very well composed. Mouthfuls of fresh and vibrant blackberry and plumb fruit on the front of the palate, with a hint of peppery spice, tar and graphite in supporting roles. The tannins still slightly grippy but not overly drying. The use of oak is restrained, leaving nothing but some subtle cedar overtones. Good balance and a nice long finish. Scrumptious. A 94 on CT from me.

There were some interesting parallels with the Brothers and Sisters cab sav. Both wines have a real vibrancy to the fruit shining through. They also both have restrained oak treatment and very nice poise and balance. I'm not sure that Hannah's Swing is quite in the same league as Brothers and Sisters, but it is very close, and the family resemblance is quite marked.

....the b and s is a cabernet, so starts a few meters in front to begin with.....by the way, the b and s tempranillo is a beaut. Now, tonight I went for a tasting of shirazes.....firsty, kangarilla rd 2013 alluvial fans shiraz.....look it's nice, earthy, rich in palate, hints of mocca chocolate,a bit of heat, not bad in essence. Second one, a VM Black Market , the 2011 Pyren Studios Ink which was quite lovely, better of course, hints of graphite, white pepper, a bit of tanins to help. Thirdly, and this one blew the others away with its refinement, the 2014 hungagai shiraz. Beautiful, rich, refined, a beauty.

That would be the one and only Mr Alzoam himself!

A rather epic dinner party at our place last night with AFF and non-AFF friends. All delicious wines but my highlights were the Pizzini Sangiovese and the two Yering Station wines.

Had a 2005 Rockford SVS Flaxman last night - yes, it was gorgeous. Fortunately only one other taker at the table, so we had a prolonged enjoyment :)

Lovely! Yes I thought on reflection that the 2009 was at its peak so I won't keep my other bottles much longer. Depends on specific vintage though, so good to have other opinions!

And you didn't invite me? :erm:

Will Taylor 04 Pinot Noir.
Will Taylor is a partner with ADL law firm Finlaysons, specialising in wine law, whatever that is.
The wines are contract made.
This Pinot was delicious. Sweet floral nose, perhaps just a tiny hint of pepper on the front palate, makes me think of woody berries like mulberry, blackberries, plum. We had it with roast duck and plum sauce. The sauce was a bit sour so the Pinot balanced it out very nicely, like a loving hug after a traumatic day. A medium length finish.

Spaghetti Bolognese tonight, so decided to try my one and only barolo: Rivetti 'Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba' Barolo DOCG 2010. I see why nebbiolo is a pairing recommendation with Spag Bol - it was a great combination. Apparently 2010 was a great year for Barolo, and this bottle was purchased as part of a Langton's mystery dozen @ $50. Great value IMHO, and I have spent the last couple of hours tonight hunting for more good, affordable Barolo :) Also opened was another 2002 Elderton Command Shiraz - won't bore anyone by talking about that again:

Yeah yeah I know it's a very hard quiz - I am happy to give a hint - fabulous large servings quality paste dished up here:

What's that you ask? What the coughk is a prawn sitting atop your Tortellini Matriciana? Funny thing - I asked the very same question. Their answer - 'Oh we have been saving that huge delicious prawn since MELCAN I - we stole it off that Goodonya dudes plate and have been saving it for another nice AFFer to come along and enjoy it!' - go figure!
