Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

The new prosecco from Innocent Bystander (on the right) is really nice. Haven't tried the Shiraz yet, but have a discount code for it, $35 down to $20 (PM me if you want it).

Finally made it to Helm. Very interesting Rieslings and as well as 2008/10 CS, Ken had a wonderful 2006 CS on special release.

Also got some of these from Fyshwick markets to being home.

Glad to see you had a productive time in CBR. Ken can talk, can't he!!!

He's wonderful to talk to with great knowledge of the district. Excellent visit. Must go back next time.

Sounds/looks very interesting! Shame I missed Helm when I was visiting wineries in Canberra earlier this year.

Interesting notation on the blackboard - cases are only 10 bottles!

The Wine: 2005 Turkey Flat Butchers Block Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre (Barossa Valley)

The Story: I have never had a Turkey Flat wine before. I remember purchasing this one based on a favorable review. I am glad that I did.
The back label states it can be cellared for 5-10 years so perhaps I am drinking it at its peak.

Firstly the nose, it is what I would describe as intoxicating. I can't help filling my lungs before every mouthful.

The taste - I'm not sure of the percentages but this wine definitely does not have that big moisture stripping Shiraz feel but the Shiraz is definitely a noticeable component and given that it is a Shiraz + G + M that comes as no surprise. The Grenache gives it what I describe as that lovely floral taste. The Mourvedre just makes the whole thing silky smooth. Long on the palate the finish is definitely Shiraz.

The verdict: Man do I wish I had purchased more than one bottle. This wine is just so easy to drink and in many ways wish there was somebody here to share it with (+1 flew off to see the grand kids). In fact I am so impressed with this wine I am seriously considering making Turkey Flat one of the stops on the AFF April wine tour.
And I'm glad I brought out the premium glassware for this deserving wine.

Anybody else here had anything from TF that they would like to report on?

I will post the pictures via my phone. For some reason the laptop can't "see" my phone so can't attach the pics.

Edit to add: The 2012 Butchers Block is only $19 cellar door. If this turns out as good as the 2005 in another 7 years I want some.

Turkey Flat rosé is a benchmark - always great!

When I visited the cellar door a few years ago, tried and bought a butchers block blended white, which was great! Very textural.

I popped in today and picked up some more Butchers Block but didn't get any rose.
Never mind, I'm sure I'll be back next year ;) so will pick some up then.

Thanks for posting Daver6, this is WAY above what I have ever tried and I am sure way above what I will ever get to try in this lifetime.
I couldn't even pronounce those names.

Like dancing, pronunciation improves with consumption ;)

While the wines on Friday night were pretty high end, the ones on Thursday while old and rare are still quite accessible from a price point perspective.

To bring us all back from daver6's heaven (where we'd all like to be), I shared these tonight with my wife and parents-in-law as we were out to dinner to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary:

Ended up not drinking the Good Catch (not that I would have drunk it anyway). The Chandon to start was actually very nice for a Champagne, more to my style - not dry and a little fruity. I actually had 2 glasses :o

The Yalumba FDR 1A 2011 was smooth but still needs time. To me, it really showed how good the 2010 is - if you ever find any, buy it.

Needless to say, both bottles finished and thankfully only a short drive home.

Well not a wine....but a cold drip coffee liqueur made in Australia and won a gold medal at the IWSC in London. Just tried some neat. Its really really good. If you like coffee, you should enjoy this. Quite different to Kahlua which is just sickly sweet. I'd imagine this could make some rather interesting coughtails too.

wow. Sounds very very interesting. Is it available nationally?

I presume so. Picked this up at Dan Murphy's for $59 today. I wasn't specifically looking for it, but happened to see it and recalled reading about it somewhere. Figured I love coffee, so I'll give it a whirl.

I believe you can also order directly online from MR BLACK

So my beverage for this week-

.

I love the tahbilk reds. This one was bottled before the French objections to their name.No humour those French.Basically the only wines I regularly buy these days are Tahbilk and Petaluma.Their reds age very well and consistently good value for your money.
However the best advice I was given by a winemaker was-"the best wine is the one you enjoy".

Now for Victorians who are looking for a place to take a dad who likes his red wine I am sure the will not mind me pinching this from today's newsletter-

No I got it on first release.Have been a member of their wine club since the 80s I think.

Far longer than me...

They had it on sale "out of the cellar" a few years later. Was a good price from memory.
