Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Shirvington Shiraz 2004:

IMG_0056_small.jpg

Made by Sparky & Sarah of Mollydooker fame, it wears its 16% alcohol effortlessly with no discernable heat. Dark fruits and vanilla on the nose, the taste is of blackberries, blueberries etc. coupled with an wonderful mix of supporting flavours - all-spice. Tannins are smooth and well integrated. This is well nice. CT92 from me.

The open bottles usually sit on a buffet table. Bit hard to drink from bottles in the cellar :)

I usually get through 1/2 bottle in a night. Multiple bottles open usually mean guests (or out for dinner with others). On the weekend I might open more than one bottle of a night and have left-overs that carry through to Sun/Mon.

That's the nice bottles. Lots of random rubbish bottles opened as well, but I don't bother posting those. Maybe we should start 'The Sink Report' thread for stuff that doesn't make the cut?
That sounds like a great idea AC. Should be very enlightening for those interested. Cheers

Has anyone tried this Australian Shiraz? It's being talked up here in New Zealand and before pulling the trigger on a few bottles, wanted to check with the experts on this forum.

Not sure of your taste preferences, Welsh-Kiwi, but as a British-Aussie! who likes a good Aussie Shiraz, I'd say it's a nice wine for the price. I didn't get a 96 experience from it. I wasn't wowed to that level of quality. But for the price, it's a good, easy drinking cool climate Shiraz that you can drink now and even cellar for sometime. Expect a sweet nose of plums, violets, oak and spice; and a medium to light bodied palate delivering a smooth dose of plums and blackberries, with a minerally backbone, and a touch of oak & spice on the finish. Hope that helps.

Jacob's Creek Reserve Signature Barossa Shiraz Cabernet
This is seriously good, red black fruits, chocolate and damn fine finish.
Part of Red 6 pack from Dan Murphy's for $120 featuring Grant Burge Shadrach.

Jeez Wozza, makes you wonder how the man in the gimp suit and ball-gag (to quote vedder50) threw a 96er at it :)

Only six at our tasting group last night for 'non mainstream reds'. What a cracker lineup!

L-R:

The principal variety in the 'Torrette' (a DOC) from Vallee d'Aosta in far NW Italy is Petit Rouge.

Mandalay Road (Geographe WA) was straight Durif. Must be one of the few produced in WA (by a former work colleague of mine).

Faber Petit Verdot (Swan Valley and wine of the night).

Pinotage from S Africa.

Very interesting Montepulciano from NZ.

A big boy - Touriga-based wine from Portugal.

The man himself knows a thing or two more about wine than me! So I'd go with his 96 over my Wozza 92.5. For $20, it's bloody good value and there's few Shiraz's that consistently deliver good quality at that price point year after year. I doubt anybody would return it as a dud - that's what makes it a recommended buy from me to our good AFF friend over The Ditch. It's just not 96 good in my humble little Wozza world of wine tasting.

It's considered one of the best value shirazes here, though we can [post=1504734]buy it for $16[/post] :) (TWE probably has an equivalent NZ site)

What would a NZ equivalent be? Trinity Hill syrah?

No denying the value for money it so obviously represents (let alone its consistency year after year) but 96 is a stellar score! Maybe the truth lies somewhere in between....94 or thereabouts

Had a glass of this in an empty J cabin between ADL and MEL today and was then given the rest by the CSM.

An ok quaffer onboard but a little acidic on the ground tonight- Hopefully it mellows by tomorrow night

Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironrock Shiraz 2012. Very similar to the last bottle - a great blend of red and dark fruits overlaying subtle spice and oak. Smooth tannins. Nice restrained cool climate Shiraz. CT91.
I prefer the Forest Hill Block 9 2010 that VM also offered last year for this style of Shiraz from WA, but at half the price, this has much better QPR.

Also sampled: Chain of Ponds The Ledge shiraz 2013: Fruit-forward Shiraz, with typical plums and dark fruits, but also lighter cherries. Faint spice (lingering hints of pepper mostly) and little oak, despite spending 21 months in barrels. 13.5% alcohol, and a much lighter Shiraz than I would have expected from Adelaide Hills. An above average quaffer now. CoP recommends 10 years of cellaring. Will be interesting to see how these evolve. CT89

maybe he was tempted by the interpolation of the numbers highlighting the impressive score...sans gag.

No no the gag was there I heard it! Actually JH's tastebuds must be preserved like Phar Lap's heart when he finally shuffles off this mortal coil, at least they won't need a very big vitrine...(they could use a spittoon I suppose)

I think JH must adjust for price (despite the fact that his scale doesn't say it caters for it). There are other, higher quality, 96 pointers, but they tend to come at a more expensive price-point. The Chalambar isn't amazing, but the QPR is consistently good.
