Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

We seriously need to do lunch, Daver6!! That Grand Cru is older than me! Guessing it's a 40th. Can't wait to see your notes on it.

I'm always in for eating and drinking with people :)

Actually, older than me too (just). No, not a 40th. Just a few friends getting together. Someone is actually bringing a 1952 Rinaldi!

Sampled this couple of weeks ago. Best pinot noir I've had for quite some time. Full and rich taste. Fortunately I have 11 more!

The better quality wines out there, this being a prime example. are just simply not made to be consumed so early. I am getting the lack of complexity issue from you Wozza in your notes. Fair call?

I read a few reviews, and they indicated that this was more of a medium-term cellaring wine than the great vintages, so I thought I'd crack one to try. I think it could with a bit more time. I have 5 more bottles, so all is not lost yet.

He makes some very fine wines for a boutique producer. This is drinking superbly while I watch Narcos 2 and wait for the roast to slow cook in the oven at 120. Lovely fine grained pepper tannins. Pity about the diam cork but it's limited production and it has done its job.

thanks for the review and thanks for some other things. Firstly, narcos one was supurb and you have alerted me to the follow up, presumably on Netflix. home tonight, I will check it out.

Secondly, I found a link to a reviewer I know not a lot about but have heard of. Nick Stock. He gave the 2013 his top 10th wine of 2014. I don't care who the professional critic is so long as they are, but top ten should mean this 2011 is a beaut based on pedigree.

Lastly, he ranked the 2010 grange his number one best wine of 2014. I just don't get it. I've had it this year and I thought it was OK. Each to their own.

EDIT - might have been another critic , james suckling, who gave the grange 2010 the top gong of 2014.

I discovered Michael Hall at a Brisbane (!) restaurant sometime in 2009 as I remember with a fabulous Chardonnay so I've been buying a range periodically since then. They cellar well. Let us know your thoughts when you try some.

After being won over last year by the Amelia Park Reserve Cab Sauv and Shiraz deals through VinoMofo, I joined as a member and committed to two six pack deliveries each year. I was convinced the quality would run through the range, whatever they put in the pack. And they would be good for mid-weekers and for casual hosting.

My first six pack arrived a few months ago, which included two of:

the Amelia Park Cabernet Merlot 2014

2014 Amelia Park Cabernet Merlot, Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River - CellarTracker

"The signature elegance and precision winemaking are evident even in Amelia Park's entry level take on the Bordeaux Blend. The Cab Sauv is the dominant force, the Merlot supporting, and the Malbec & Pet. Verdot are also there to savour.

It's an intriguing Margaret River take on this classic Old World blend as blackberries, raspberries, cassis, expresso, mint, violets, lavender and spice exude on the fragrant nose. And the palate, med-bodied & silky smooth, follow those flavours with added mulberries and chocolate too. Easy drinking. And super classy. Not sure I quite got the cassis, chocolate, lavender and mint take on the Bordeaux Blend. But I'm not disappointed in the slightest. Glad I'm a member and getting these excellent wines. A Wozza 93/100 (3.8/5.0) from me.

Also curious to hear about the Pinotage, I've never tried one and am intrigued by previous comments I've heard, both good and bad!

Sorry, missed this earlier. Now, trying to remember the Pinotage...

Given that all the wines were darn good, it was right up there. I guess I was surprised that it was Pinotage, given its smoothness and drinkability. Some that I've had in the past on early visits to S Africa when I was keen to try it have been over-extracted grippy monsters that have put me off the variety, so I've tended to avoid it.

Therefore I don't claim to be much of an authority on the variety but this was one of the best, if not the best, I've had. An experienced palate in the group was very impressed/most surprised and I think I'm with him. So, yes, a goody.

Final line-up from the lunch that went into dinner. Sadly, the La Lagune was corked :( For once I had the foresight to think ahead and had stood up a 1988 Pontet Canet as a backup wine and it was on song.

Had this after dinner last night - very nice one too. Had an almost chocolate-like taste. Very smooth and we polished it off in no time. Took quite a bit of willpower not to open another. Aim to keep the remainder of the dozen for a couple of years.

Another of theirs thru the Fo is a beautiful wine, the 2011 Reserve Cabernet. For me, an easy 8.4 pointer. However, looking through my notes in search of the other Fo pickup, I found the 2012 Shiraz/Cabernet. This blend is just allright in comparison.

You have obviously done well with the 2013 straight shiraz.

Picked up from Qantas Epiqure maybe 12 months ago. Somewhere around $20 a bottle I think - but came with some generous bonus points. Wasn't expecting too much - but enjoyed it.

It's been a big weekend. There were two real highlights.

Margan 1999 Botrytis Semillon

A stunning aged botrytis Semillon. Deep golden in colour. The honeyed sweetness is beautifully balanced by burnt caramel and complex marmalade citrus flavours, with just enough acid to carry the wine. Exquisite. A 97 on CT from me.

Silkman 2013 Shiraz Pinot

A stunning modern twist on the classical Hunter Valley burgundy style blend. A 50/50 blend of shiraz and pinot noir.

Silken soft and smooth, as supple as I have ever tasted. Borrowing the rich earthy structure from the hunter shiraz and finessing it with richly detailed floral highlights from the pinot. Delivers a tour-de-force with an exceptionally long finish and perfect balance. Whilst I don't always agree with Sir JH, he describes it as a thing of beauty, I find it hard to disagree. This 2013 is a work of genius. The 2014 is even better. A 96 on CT from me.

So tastes like silk?

Had a bottle of 2011 Marques de Riscal Reserva, Rioja DOC for my neighbour tonight but he was called away so I reverted to this as a standby. Very approachable CO Pinot. Not too sweet as some are becoming, soft gentle spice thistle tannins. Yum.

Fabulous review, DB! This might be the wine to get me over my lack of pinot-appreciation ;) Do you buy cellar direct or have a better source? I can see that there are still some bottles of the 14 around the traps for sale...
