Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Oakridge 2014 Willowlake Vineyard Pinot Noir - Picked this up for just over $21.50 a bottle the other day on WineMarket in a six pack (RRP $36). Has good reviews and doesn't disappoint. light to medium bodied, berries, smoky bacon and eucalypt on the bouquet, gentle acidic raspberry fruit on the palate, not overtly sweet with a bit of spice and savoury complexity lurking. Beautiful smooth finish. This is gonna be a cracker over the next few years. Will definitely be picking up more when I see it again for this price - it's a beautifully balanced bargain. The 2015 is also out now and is supposed to be just as good if not better. Highly recommended. I don't do scores but if I did 95/100.

DannyM had a tasting last Friday which included an Oakridge Pinot that I think was selling for about $20. It was extremely mediocre. the above must be the older brother.

What I did get a real kick from was their New Zealand Sauv Blank that I think has a red ewe on the front. Could even be a ram but the wine was absolutely sensational for its price of six bucks a bot.

On tasting also was some sparkling white stuff from north Victoria and that was seriously average.

Something to take my mind off that WTF moment happening across the Pacific Ocean...

Langi Ghiran Mount Langi Shiraz 2005:
Awesome drinking...a great blend of restrained blue and dark fruit, coupled with complex savoury spices. Tannins are super fine and well integrated. The whole elixir is mouth-coating with a great lingering, balanced taste.

I see a few Parous offerings are up on VinoMofo, at the moment, bringing buying shivers down my spine. I think the Parous (Barossa version) Shiraz 12 was my third return in a row. And my last purchase from the Fo over a year ago.

So it's nice to report a VinoMofo purchase that I liked (from a swap with AC):

the Bodegas Olarra Rioja Erudito Reserva 2009

My notes concluded:

2009 Bodegas Olarra Rioja Erudito Reserva Especial, Spain, La Rioja, Rioja - CellarTracker

"Forget the Decanter 97 score and the DWWA International Best Spanish Red in Show (2014). This Rioja Tempranillo dominate blend is all about the silky smooth palate. And the LONG, long finish.

The nose isn't that forthcoming. But the wine feels quite nimble in the mouth. And has this intensity of ripe fruit flavours that drives hard for that incredibly long finish. As plums, black cherries, coffee, tobacco leaf and black pepper combine seamlessly and lead the charge to a more sweet raspberry, vanilla and pepper finish. Exellente!

Great Rioja for drinking now and until at least 2019. This gets a Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me.
"

I'm thinking it might have deserved a higher Wozza score for its balance and massive finish. But the nose doesn't match the power of the palate. So I've topped it out at a still high 95. If it's still available, I would recommend taking a 6 pack. It's a fair price at $30 a bottle for a European import.

Picked this up from the Den with my $20 credit. Ok but the jury is still out. It is a little flat for want of a better word. I will try it with something else before deciding. I guess it was under $9- maybe transport shock....

Hope you also tried the 40yo Taylor's to finish, or a Paradis! No chateaux Yquem?
Re: the Taylor's? Of course!! Ha Ha. Preceded by the Climens Sauternes as you'd expect. The P2 was only served on DBX-CDG and no d'Yquem on either leg.
My favourite was the Loius Jadot Burgundy but I forgot to take a pic.

A quieter week but was lucky enough to try the Delatite RJ Reserve shiraz from the mighty 10. Ooozes class and elegance. Still youthful,Medium to full bodied, brilliant ribena hues in the glass, picked blind I went to SA, lush fruit, strawberry/raspberry. Long finish with a hint of spice and quality oak. JH only gave this a 94, me 96. Don't know if i would part with the RRP....but beautiful drinking none the less.

d'Arenberg Dead Arm shiraz 2006:
Pretty much similar to the last one: Still quite tight/closed in my opinion. Acidity is there, black fruits are there, tannins drying but smooth. Savoury spice, black pepper and chocolate on the after-taste, but really could do with more resting IMHO. CT91

Second night on this (2012)...much happier with it...has softened & is balanced now...am wondering tho if Barossa Shiraz is in my rear view mirror...

Think was part of a Winemarket mixed, wouldn't pay $40 or buy it separately, but pleasant wine none the less...

Cheers to the Reds ending their duck winning over the Roar, and a break from America's woes :o

More like Mexico's woes I would think. Many will be having a serious case of the DT's. Ole.

Weekend quaffer.

Drinking alone this weekend so went for a cheap one which was surprisingly very good, especially the next day after it opened up nicely.

I had the privilege of savouring, not just one, but two magnificent Hunter Reds over the weekend:

I LOVE Hunter Shiraz. Especially when it's this good. It was a social gathering of some school dads. And I think I was a bit awestruck enjoying the wine. So no detailed notes to speak of, other than some brief thoughts here:

Very lucky indeed to have tried these. Especially the O'Shea.

Tried a Serrat Pinot last night - don't know what to think of it. I only bought one to see whether it is something to get more of, I guess the fact I am undecided is reason enough not to. For me it was neither strawberries n cream, light / dark cherry or earthy. It was nice and very very easy to drink but different.
