Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

My wife's from Central, lovely part of the world but can't believe there is still snow on the mountains. How's the Wooing Tree?

Glenguin Estate 2013 Ironbark Tannat

I’m new to Tannat, but if other Tannat’s are like this then I think I’m going to be a big fan. Medium bodied and very savoury in style, but incredibly moorish. The black raspberry and black plum fruit is juicy without being overly sweet. There are cured meats, nutmeg and a touch of cedar on the mid palate, followed by a lightly smoky finish. The tannins are firm and slightly drying, but not overly so. I like it - a lot! A 90 on CT from me.

Tannat's usually a grape that needs 20+ years to soften up. Had a 2000 Chateau Montus Madiran AOC this afternoon, and I think it's just starting to get to a good spot.

Definitely an enigmatic grape that's not easy to come by

Sounds interesting. Never come across a Tannat! Must go looking...:)

A gathering of the boyo's last night......terrific line up leaving us all a tad dusty this morn.

Started with the Seppelt Sparkling 2007 - A cheapie...not particularly well rated but I couldn't find fault...easy drinking

Penfolds St Henri 1989 - well into secondary territory....beautiful opaque crimson, fruit almost gone..very smooth and elegant.Excellent but I probably prefer it younger.

Yalumba Octavius 2001 - Classy and brooding - massive fruit forward big Barossan. WOTN for me.

Henschke Mount Edelstone 2006 - A tad disappointing, doesn't know what it wants to be, compared to the wonderful 2004 last week....needs plenty of time

Zema Family Selection Shiraz 2008 - Zema fan and this didn't disappoint...full bodied with great oak...

Cape Mentelle Cabernet 2005 - picked as a WA cab..blackcurrents and spice..vg

Atze's Corner The Giant Durif 2014....this is big...all black fruits....needs time for the tannins to settle...vg

IN addition to the aforementioned "victims" we were also treated to the following:

1989 Wendouree Cabernet Sauvignon
and
2008 Chateau Musar Cabernet blend:
This is an excellent offering from the enigmatic Lebanese chateau, recently released in 2015. Blackcurrants and red berries on the nose, with plenty of savoury spice as well. The taste is intense and well structured, with dark fruits, plums, loads of savoury flavours and well rounded tannins. Apparently a touch of Carignan in the blend. This is young but looking so promising. CT93

I had this over 2 days on the weekend. I really liked it, it reminds me of the '13 Rockfords Handpicked. I had it with crispy skin salmon on the first night and it paired well. I had the remaining 1/3 bottle on the second night without food, and enjoyed it also.

AC how did the 1989 Wendouree Cabernet Sauvignon fare?

Whodoesthat, I can say the Wendouree Cabernet Sauvignon 1989 was the first for me and a few other AFFers who gathered with our families on a fine Spring Saturday afternoon. And what a stunning wine. Regal. Timeless. And really compelling. I still haven't quite got my notes together yet. But I can tell you most of us came away thinking:

Now that is what all the fuss is about!

It was lovely to gather almost a year to the day that a gaggle of us AFFers met in person, thanks to the Wine Lovers threads. And so we gathered - now good friends - with our families. Sharing some amazing food (thanks to Alzoam and his lovely wife), amazing wines, and wonderful company.

Amongst some truly great wines, including the crazy good Chateau Masur and the stunning aged Wendouree Cab Sauv, we did open this:

the Paxton Jones Block Shiraz 2012

And, as you'll see from the below the Paxton, for me, was still a standout wine, punching well above its $30 pay grade:

"I wasn't sure how this would go, given this was my bargain Best Buy Red of last year. Especially after 250+ wines have passed over the buds since then (reforming my views on wines) and because it was opened alongside some pretty special wines on a fine Spring afternoon in Sydney.

And it's still a great wine. With lovely complexity and fine balance, drive and finish. One of the group picked out coconut oil. And he's right. There's a lovely interplay between the dark fruits, the sweet coconut oil and the savoury oaked spices. What a vintage.

And it's still 4+ yrs from its prime. It still gets a giant killer (albeit slightly recalibrated) Wozza 95.5/100 (4.3/5.0) from me.
"

Glad I have plenty of these to savour over the years to come, GW. And it's still available after a quick look now, and it would appear it's hard to come by at retail. Shame.

Just a word of caution, this is the 2013 vintage (although still a 96 from JH). I don't think it's available at retail anymore, although a few have come up on Langtons.

Sounds like a great lunch :)

Thanks Ste667. I've removed the link as it's misleading.
