Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Couple of wines that are a little different. Consumed at Must Wine Bar The second more so than the first. I'm really loving champagne from Bouzy. A really rich style.

Have been trying to get the very best deal on DM. They tend to call every few months as do Penfolds. I am suffering from sticker shock on Penfolds 707. It isn't made every year and is better than Grange but now at $480 list price I have hesitated.
Getting DM around $100 or Silver Oak (California) seems to make more sense.

Cove, how do you get Silver Oak in Oz? I'm in Perth and be interested in splitting a case.

Baiden I bring it home from California a couple at a time so no case lots. San Diego Wine company shipped me a dozen from their warehouse up to Marina del Rey. They handled my purchase really well because it wasn't going across any State line. I don't think they would ship it to Perth but I could be wrong.
We have a wine storage at our apartment building over there.
I do keep trying wines at Ruth's Chris steakhouse which is a walking distance from our place.
Diana Madeline is a winner for us in Perth.

Have you tried the Cloudburst Cabernet? Not cheap (well it is compared to 707).

We had some fun last night!

The Mount Mary were both close to being past it, the Dorrien was just drinkable, The Howard Park was as you would expect, devine and Koltz is now one of my favourites, so I always enjoy drinking wine from there, regardless of vintage :)

After recommendations from people here, I bought some Hares Chase Ironscraper 2013 Shiraz from Langtons,so thought I'd crack the first bottle tonight.

It certainly benefited from the 90 mins decanting and went nicely with chicken tagliatelle cooked by friends who are staying with us.

Moist earthy scent with oak and a medium finish which just got better with each glass, very pleased that I still have 7 bottles left.

From the same recommendations on AFF I have picked a few of these up from Langton's via auction at a good price. I cracked my first tonight and am very pleased. A beautiful Shiraz.

Thanks Wozza, DB, AC and everyone else who I missed.

Friday night Chardonnay: one of my favourite WA Chardonnays. Drinking very well. (29C and 76% outside makes it even better ) interestingly no malo, just nice oak. Some flinty characters, gunpowder taints.

Isn't it big!! I've noticed the price of them has been trending up; no doubt due to influences like this site

Thats for sure, and it is still only a baby. It will be nice to try one every year (until they run out) to see how it further develops.

A few randoms from the past weeks

Giaconda Aeolia 2008:

Well, well, well - what a interesting wine. 100% Roussanne - a Northern Rhone grape which I understand is rare as a straight variety. Golden straw in the glass. Lemon rind and tropical fruit notes, with nutty cashew and a creamy, textured mouthfeel. Quite a distinct palate, in a nice way. Tannins are super fine. It's all really nicely balanced, despite the unusual profile - a nod to Giaconda quality I guess. CT91

Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock shiraz 1998:
One of Australia's all time great cool climate Shiraz, from Heathcote. Nicely into its final phase - stewed fruit, aniseed, smokey wood chips, tar, leather and savoury spice assail the senses. It's past its peak, but still drinking nicely as an aged Shiraz. CT90

Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon 2004:
Best bottle of the '04 I've had. Intense nose of cassis and savoury spice. The palate still has plenty of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. There's dry earth, savoury spice and oh-so-smooth tannins. A real mouth coating feel with a nice long finish. Less forest floor funk than previous bottles. Excellent Bordeaux style blend. CT93

Some other notables:
The Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironrock Reisling 2014 - a real sweet/dry balancing act there.
The Yarra Yarra Wines - The Yarra Yarra 2002 was disappointing - opened two bottles and both "over the hill". The Barossa Old Vine Wine Company shiraz 2002 redeemed 2002 for me.

For those that bought the Norfolk Rise Mt Benson shiraz 2015 from VM (or elsewhere), I was quite impressed at the value-for-money here. A $7.50 wine that, whilst not overly complex, is a great cool-climate shiraz QPR. CT90 from me
I also tried the Mt Pleasant High Paddock shiraz 2014 ($22/bot from Epiqure). Maybe not as good value as the Mt Pleasant Philip 2014 that seems to have been floating around at $15 (a few stores apparently didn't adjust the price up to reflect 2014), it's looking like a great Hunter, lighter style shiraz, with tart raspberries, cherries, blackberries, earth etc. Something to look into if didn't get OP&OH, Rosehill etc for 2014.

Ending 2016 with a 10 year old wine - my last bottle of Jim Barry's PB Reserve shiraz-cabernet 2006:
Big flavours in the nose: blackcurrants, mint, ripe dark fruits. The palate is still big bodied, with firm tannins, dark fruits, dark chocolate, liquorice with a figurative ton of savoury spice on the finish. A great 71/29 blend of Shiraz/Cabernet. Drinking in its prime now and over the next couple of years IMHO CT91

Before heading off to the Opera House to watch some things exploding in the sky. Happy New Year (belatedly) to the AFF community...

This wine s a real beauty with at least a decade and a half in it. It truly is the Hare of that old dog Wozza.

I think you actually got in early AC with it being the year of the Rooster next weekish. cough -a-doodle do.

Now this is where it gets a little lateral. Chatting with my chinese friends this week I find that the word for chicken or rooster is the same thing. So in the multi animal year system, I asked why is this not the year of the chicken?

Is it that the western culture has decided that the damn male of this species should take precedence over the female? You don't have the year of the lioness, the tigress, the snakess do you? So what's going on here?

Any further elucidation would be greatly appreciated, but in the wine musings etc forum, unless you can string something together into a nice wine piece. I have. You can too.

According to Google, rooster and chicken are different.

Cracked the Truffle and Wine co Cabernet tonight. A little young still but deliciously plummy and an hour in the decanter did wonders.
