Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Whodoesthat, I reckon half of us here would have made ourselves available to help you move the cellar if we knew you were putting on some a spread of wines...damn, you're even in BNE :o :(

Go on, tell the long story (we can open a bottle each, then read and drink).

I agree ... I would have flown up from MEL to be a part of that wine experience ... and of course to lend a hand. :)

We seem to have progressed from the slab of beer for the working bee crew:D. A call to arms to help move a cellar (long story) turned into the never to be repeated Anzac Day 2017 Ute party........some fabulous wines consumed... some long stories told...lots of laughs... all with a great bunch of like minded mates.....

All the wines were on zimmer frames, some more so than others.
Wine of the day award was a toss between the 1991 Limestone Ridge and 1990 Seppelt Dorrien and the 1991 Wynns limited release Cab Shiraz...all superb!
What an incredible day, I must confess to some considerable envy especially with the Limestone Ridge, I've had a 1976 vintage (back in the mid-eighties) and it was probably one of the best reds I've ever drunk, nice work!!

I was curious to work out the final Langtons Mystery Dozen I picked up last week (average $50 a bottle). After discovering I had the:

Elderton Single Vineyard Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

IMG_0481.jpg

I thought I would road test it over the coming 3 nights.

My preliminary Vivino review was as follows:

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/67299106

"Riddled with incurable Dead Arm, the two 1940 Ashmead blocks on the Elderton Vineyard (Barossa) are some of the oldest Cab Sauv plantings in the world. Sadly it's a dying icon that the Ashmead family decided to nurse on due to the immense quality of fruit produced by the super low yielding vines

This 4th release is still holding up at 16 yrs. The 2-3 yrs in French oak give great depth of flavour and a melted chocolate mouthfeel. As intense blackcurrant, cassis, cigar box, violets and spice ride the medium-full bodied
palate. There's a saline lick to the big, smokey, savoury finish. It's a regal, satisfying experience. There's still great fruit intensity and structure to age further. But it's just perfect for me. A Wozza 92.5/100 (3.7) from me."

I'm looking forward to savouring this fine wine over the next 2 / 3 nights. A definite recommendation from me.

Must say my good friend Marc certainly brings out some nice wines.
The VP and Veritas are however going to wait until next time.

That is one of my favourite "everyday" wines Steady.

Reasonably priced when you buy a few doz.

what age are you drinking them at?

Bit of a mixed bag. The entry level / mid level blends have altered over time.

Certainly they benefit from a few years, but probably not too many. Those with a bit more Merlot seem to be easier drinking closer to release.

Mmm, that was 5yo and I think I preferred the younger ones I have had of this wine (have only had 2 others of that blend so not a big sample size)

Posted this in the champagne thread, but relevant here too:

A great drop worth a mention - made at one of Australia's highest wineries - De Salis wines - De Salis Wines

They do sparkling's like you wouldn't believe:

- Blanc de blanc
- Blanc de noir
- Loftee Cuvee

All three a gorgeous and if you are lucky enough to find any of the older vintages, even better!

A dedication to my mate, Delectable Blue, who's leaving these fine shores of NSW for the balmy, mossy, ruggedness that is Tasmania. DB was the first to extol the virtues of the Irvine Eden Valley Grand Merlot to me way back when.

This 1999 is a cracker on night 2, a Langtons auction private cellar buy. Here's what I posted on Vivino:

IMG_0522.jpg
http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/67690274

"Aussie Merlot specialist, James Irvine has created another fine *Merlot Monster* from Eden Valley with this 1999 vintage.

At 18 yrs, it's right in its purple patch, flaunting immense fruit power, chocolate-smooth, slightly drying tannins, and fine oak complexities that 3 yrs of 100% French Oak maturation brings. The 15% ABV shows on the octane-fuelled nose. But is balanced nicely by the intense fruit and big oak flavours. As blackcurrant, mulberry, prune, coffee bean, vanilla and cedar oaked spices roll and linger
an age. It's unapologetically an Aussie take on an Old World grape. And it's all the better for it. Bravo James Irvine for sticking to your old school Merlot guns. A Wozza 93/100 (3.8) from me."

The Grand Merlots are regularly on the Langtons auctions, often at fairly reasonable prices. And based on this aged gem, a wine I will be looking out for more. [Even if it breaks my not-above-14.5%-ABV rule!]

See you soon, dear Delectable Blue. Sydney will miss you.

Cheers, Wozza

Thanks Wozza for your kind words. I'll miss you guys too. Hopefully I'll be able to sneak back occasionally for a meetup or two. But please look me up if you are ever in Hobart. I'll be hitting the wine trails as soon as I get down there, hoping to find some hidden gems.

2006 Home Hill Reserve Pinot Noir

Some quality wine there DB.

Before you go hitting the wine trails - be sure to check out visitvineyards.com - there are some discounts available to auto club/AAA members.

IIRC Home Hill currently only offer a discount on the restaurant bill, a shame its not on wine as well - they still have the '15 Kelly's Reserve Pinot Noir available at the CD
(Halliday rated the '14 Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy winner 97 points and the current vintage 98)

Edit; DM have the '15 at a much better price after the usual discounts

A couple of nice wines since Easter...interspersed between the quaffers.

Corks are a major issue with these older wines...will be great to see what the Stelvin does for 25-30yr wines...once decanted, they tend to open up and evolve quite quickly before peaking and then dumbing down.....just as well they don't last to see a second night:rolleyes:

1988 Wolf Blass Brown - On the backside run, would have been an absolute behemoth 10 years ago...still a little fruit left....very good. I'm a massive fan of their higher end wines, love the style, a bit too bold for some but I'd take a sixpack of Black and a Platinum over a bottle of Grange anyday...:) but hey thats just me..

1991 Lindemans St George Cabernet- Cork was suspect and opened with a bit of bottle pong.. decanted and 30 minutes was starting to sing...the Trio is definitely has QPR and I should really buy 3 of each every year regardless... excellent

1995 Barossa Estate Shiraz Cabernet - Lashings of sweet fruit still evident... another Barossa bomb...excellent

2003 Yalumba Hand picked Riesling - Worth a mention...possesses all the components of a good Rizza (my opinion)...Kero, Lime citrus punching through...an softened nicely with age... delish.
