Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

We had a few friends around for pizza last night. The standout was the Kay Bros 2002 shiraz. It took a while to open up but went down a treat. The Tyrells magnum was also very smooth

I had another Pindarie wine last night, this time the Shiraz. It is a nice quaffer, but a poor second cousin to the Cab Sauv from a few days ago IMO

What's the saying? ...long time between drinks....we certainly made up for it on Easter Sunday. The crew of six stalwarts cracked a few of the better wines in a regional blind tasting get together. Great evening, great company, followed by monumental hangovers (quoted by one as a 9.75) and as we are all in the over 50's crowd, really should have known better

The highlights as follows:
The 1990 Penfolds 707 Cabernet magnum taking out wotn, the 1988 Cyril and the more youthful 2002 Mosswood well up there.
Of the Shiraz, the Obsidian for best nose of the night, loved the regional style of both the OP&OH and Yarra Yering, and the Qld Mouvedre providing an interesting take.
The E&E Black Sparkling 2002 was also drinking superbly.
Sadly the 1988 Penfold 389 was relegated to the drain.

And the Mad Hatter Award goes to:

the Dr Mayer Remstal Rotwein 2013

My Winosphere note read:

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/66831540

" "I just grabbed six barrels and blended them together, negociant style". "cough* it, I just want something nice to drink sometimes." That's winemaker, Timo Mayer. He calls himself a farmer. He's a left-field gifted, German who now hails from the Yarra Valley. The grapes are from Remstal, Wurttemberg, Germany. And the (deliberately no back label) wine is a blend of spatbugunder (Pinot Noir), lemberger & merlot.

It's an intriguing wine that throws the rule book right out the window in favour of Timo's big motto: Bring Back The Funk!

I loved it.

This wine is full of great contrasts. First, there's the deep, dark blackcurrant colour that shrouds the light to medium-body. Then there's the heady, strong grapefruit & lemon nose that fresh & breezy. The palate starts slick, but ends dry as an eclectic mix of raspberry, blackberry, liquorice, grapefruit, wood sap, dried herbs and spice start soft, but immediately build towards that crescendoing sappy, spicy finish.

It's a hard one to score, given it sits in the Completely Left Field section of the wine world. But it works. And it's well made. For me, the score is irrelevant here. Give it a whirl - preferably blind with your fancy wine mates. They'll be flummoxed. But in a good, but unique and rare, way."

This was a gift from a Vivino mate. So I'm not sure on price or availability. But it's one I'd recommend if you like to stretch your wine horizons beyond the norm.

Cheers, Wozza

Last nights theme for my tasting group was straight Cabernet not from Margaret River or Coonawarra. JohnM being the sneaky one brought a Japanese wine!

What about the '07 Jane Brook from the MR?

Yes, well spotted. Technically the theme was to avoid if possible. The person who brought that along had a little brain fade. Jane Brook winery is actually in the Swan Valley, so this is what confused him.

Last night with roast leg of lamb.

Lovely Cabernet, blackcurrent, cassis, some spice and dark chocolate notes, fine tannins.

2000 d'Arenberg Coppermine Road Cab Sauv. Threw a ridiculous amount of sediment! Glad I stood this bottle up in the cellar 48 hours ago. A brilliant example of why you should do so with older wines.

Lovely forest floor notes in this 2012 Gibbston valley Pinot. Along with an variation on Dehlia Smith's omelette Savoyard!

We seem to have progressed from the slab of beer for the working bee crew:D. A call to arms to help move a cellar (long story) turned into the never to be repeated Anzac Day 2017 Ute party........some fabulous wines consumed... some long stories told...lots of laughs... all with a great bunch of like minded mates.....

All the wines were on zimmer frames, some more so than others.
Wine of the day award was a toss between the 1991 Limestone Ridge and 1990 Seppelt Dorrien and the 1991 Wynns limited release Cab Shiraz...all superb!
In the Penfolds stable the 1986 St Henri beat the 1987 Grange and 1988 389....all drinking well but in strong company. The Wynns blacks 1990 and 1993 were both excellent as was the 1991 Michael.....only the Leuwin 1981 had seen better days....apology in advance for being pic heavy...cheers
