Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Last Tuesday of the month's blind wine tasting.

Nice acid backbone to the 2002 St Helga. Excellent vintage.
2010 Lou Miranda surprisingly mid bodied, inviting but underwhelming. Not sure will improve with further cellaring.
The Curly Flat had a beautifully perfumed nose but no fruit or finish. Poor vintage best voided IMHO.
(Apologies for the sideways pics. Anyone know how to correct these? They were taken in portrait?)

The 2009 Bindi Heathcote Pyrette Shiraz was very rounded.
Charley Melton's Voices of Angels Shiraz 2008 was a standout. McLaren Vale fruit from a Barossa based producer. Apparently sources differ vintage to vintage. Recommended.
2002 Orlando Lawsons Padthaway Shiraz. Peppermint, chocolate, licorice and ripe plums. Old school Aussie shiraz!

Now here's one for you.

This was actually a cracker Chardonnay. Hard to explain. Unique style; not obviously wooded, nor nouveau lean, but with very good, unique texture and Chardonnay flavour coming through. Went just beautifully with tonight's sensational Japanese banquet at my Ryokan near Nagano. When my brother, who is not greatly into wine and usually drinks little, said "let's get another one" beforevI had the chance to say it, I knew we were on a winner!

Hi Baiden, straight from the winery, but i believe it is sold out now, you best chance is to ask around local stores, if you have apple devices, download "Wineosphere" and look up this review and comments, its free to peek.

Still available at Different Drop (10% off first order for new customers):

2014 Blue Poles Allouran Merlot Cabernet Franc

I received 6 x 2011 and 6 x 2014 from the winery last week. Have tried the 2011 which was excellent, will give the 2014 a go soon.

Didn't think I liked Merlot much, but this wine has been a revelation.

Cheers guys, was hoping to see it on VM (where I got the 2011) but looks like I'll have to consider DD - just not sure its a $30 wine.

a few reasons why you should buy from the winery

1. They will not send you wine at high temp. days
2. They take proper care of the wine, there's lot of comments online where vm wines are affected by heat, maybe storage problems.
one of the wine was blue poles 2011 allouran, people say they tasted different from the one they purchased straight from vm.

3. Even though vm does provide a lower price but i rather support the winery , for vm, it doesn't matter how low they sell the wine, they still gets a certain %% , so its a win win for vm, where the winery itself its not as profitable.
4. wines like allouran will be in short supply, you might found a better deal later, but how long? are they store in a good condition environment?

You won't find the 2014 on VM, Mark Gifford the winemaker has a small quantity for mailing list customers and a few of his retailers and restaurants. I doubt what is out there in retail land will last long. It's definitely a $30+ wine in my book.

Mark Gifford wrote on TWF that VM bought the 2011 at regular wholesale prices, so I guess Blue Poles made just as much money as selling via any other retailer/channel.

I tested by the glass and decided that in my latest trip to California that Silver Oak from Napa, then a Silver Oak Alexander Valley and a Robert Mondavi Napa were the ones to rank in this order. Didn't find a new Zinfandel worth mentioning.

The 2006 Rockford SVS Flaxman and Hoffman are the last SVS wines to be produced as Chris Ringland is no longer part of the team. These wines are delicious though somewhat expensive. Given that I have 4 of each that I don't want, what would you do with them???
