Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Hosted a wine tasting with some friends a week ago, had some decent wines. The cellar requires a bit of a restock, which it will get courtesy of Rekindling.

Craggy Range voted wine of the day, but I thought the Langhi Ghiran romped that in by a country mile. Commendations went to the Wolf Blass and the Laurent Perrier. The Mt. Mary Chardonnay was sublime and they remain (IMO) the best winery in Australia.

In truth. not a bad wine to be found except the Soave, which was corked. Unfortunate as it is usually a cracking drop.

Interesting! The Pieroplan?

Such a pity. The various Pieroplan Soaves are some on my favourite, go to, northern Italian whites these days.

Agreed, I was really disappointed on the day as I expected to change some strongly held opinions right there and then.

If there's one thing that's consistent about Italian wines, it's inconsistency.

2016 Wet Jacket Sauvignon Blanc

Unusual NZ SB. Simply stunning pale straw toned wine with a fragrant nose of lifted passionfruit, gooseberry, citrus, melon and a touch of flint.

The palate is chillingly dry with sweet gooseberry, stone fruit nettle and citrus.

Is it just me , or do others check out the beck tops upon which these fine beverages reside ?

Light gold in colour. Clear.

Delicate nose with a hint of kerosene, under ripe pineapple, apricot and lemon blossom. In the mouth, quite intense flavours with decent palate weight. High acid and a hint of residual sugar. Hint of lemon, light apricot, fresh pineapple. Very long, dry finish.

Excellent quality wine with great complexity. Drink now or over the next 10 years. $60

For those who remember the CM a secret Shiraz deal from ~ 4 weeks ago which was the 2014 Black Wattle Shiraz.

I cracked the first one tonight with a simple BBQ. It was excellent. My yardstick for wines around the $15-20 mark is a Church Block because it is so widely available and we'll known. Black Wattle is much better IMHO.

Sure, it's a straight Shiraz rather than the CB blend, but even so it's terrific. On the nose you can tell it is still developing as there a hint of fruit. It has a nice earthy colour and burnt characteristics on the side pallet.

I picked it up for $9.29/btl after the usual discounts, plus the DRW tax... it was <$8/btl for most people.

Very pleased I grabbed 2 doz.

Went to a Charles Heidsieck lunch today hosted by none other than Ned Goodwin MW. First time I've met him, but what a fantastic down to earth nice guy. Also my first time drinking Charles Heidsieck champagnes. I'm sold! The current Brut NV has its base year as the 2008 vintage with 40% reserve wines. Seriously amazing value for money wine. Highly highly recommend this stuff. The wine see no wood whatsoever (actually, that's the case for all CH wines). The NV rose was excellent too and so what the 1995 Blanc des Millenaires. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday lunch.
