Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Highest priced vino $34 at Little Italy in Griffith - I’ll tell you in an hour if it’s any good - couldn’t be any worse than some of that vinegar pennygirl and broomy bring with them to OT :D

So bottle is empty - glass not so - as much as I am happy to take one for the team not sure I can force this down

Let’s start with the obvious, the label. Wrapping a wine bottle in brown paper is lazy and just ugly. Ok, rant over. Thankfully the wine is very nice. Dense and savoury, I like it.

Interesting way of getting the wine to stand out on the bottle shop shelf. I always wonder whether they’ve spent all their money on marketing instead of the grapes and the wine making.

I don't think so, winery is a very primitive setup, the only 'marketing' came by way of a MB 95 point review on Instagram (or Twitter or something). Legend is that the winemaker had to beg, borrow and steal to get the grapes (albeit from some illustrious vineyards in the end).

It's a cracking wine for the price point IMO, tried with a few friends immediately upon delivery and they all bought 6 right after.

Is it still available?

Agree it’s good wine, for the price. Must say I could not find any resemblance to Sami-Odi style. It almost seems MB used his name (whom he also reviews exclusively) for marketing purposes.

Have been drinking a few of my Tallarook whites lately, all 2018's, chadonnay, roussanne and marsanne. The marsanne is the least favourite as it's too lean but the other two are supurb. Can be had for about $50 for 6 which is very good. I am still on the non buying till July 1 so knocking a few of the old Fo faves. Backreading here one thing stuck in my mind. Comments about a wine which really opened up after a few hours. You decant your wine and I assume for most cases its a single. You have a sip and think yes, not bad. But as the night rolls on it gets better and better to the point you are left with three mouthfulls to go and wished you hadn't touched it till now. What to do? You can't crack another after the first glass can you so it is a slight bugbear. Sure for next time you might remember but this is here and now, real time. Anyone else solved the problem? Do you drink on simple water for 2 hours in the interim?
Best wine i have had in the last few months is the Curtis Limited edition 2016 Grenache. A beauty with great fruit and an amazing balance. A line on the label was interesting and true and i had not read this before. 'An underlying hint of pepper typical of concentrated grenache". I learnt something new that day and i did discern the 'pepper', not quite victorian shirazzy pepper but it was there. Last night an old fo, a 2014 yarra valley trapeze pinot. Damn good. Which is what we all want.

So we were cleaning out my late brother’s place and came to his wine. My sisters didn’t want this horrible old stuff, covered in an inch of dust, so I took custody of it. Probably going to be opened for a Christmas toast to him.

It would have been kept in a cool position and relatively un disturbed for most of its life. Contents look pretty full.

Any opinions on what it may be like? (offers to sample to assist opinion will be politely declined 😊)

I went to a wine club dinner last year where it was a Bring out your dead and someone bought a bottle of 75 Grange (I know different vintage) and not sure how it was stored but it was just meh and very disappointing so I hope yours is better. A nice memory anyway

I’ve been lucky enough to try a few Penfolds wines from this era (albeit not this one) and IME there is huge variability between bottles. Some are awesome and some are completely dead. Just open it and see how you go. Hopefully it’s one of the great ones.

Sounds like there's a chance it will disappoint... How about I assume all the risk for you and swap you for a couple of bottles of quite recent black label that are guaranteed to be good? Deal?

I would send it to auction rather than take the chance.

Crack it and drink it. Don't hold it. Unfortunately 1977 was a pretty average vintage (actually holds true worldwide except for vintage port) so you're not going to be getting a small fortune at auction. Also given it was your brother's, I'd imagine drinking it and the stories/memories will be more valuable than any money you'd get trying to flog it.
