Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

So what's your take on Curly Flat?

Me? Fabulous. Their wines for Pinot and Chardonnay are very Burgundian. MV6 clones for Pinot and don't know for the Chardonnay. Chardonnays are rich, lemon and limes and quite luscious without being overly buttery, especially with a year or two under their belt. The Pinot is rich with great fruit and depth, some forest floor character but not overly berryish. They also do other wines such as the White Pinot which is an interesting wine.

I decided some years ago to make them our 'house wines' and buy several dozen a year now to put down.

The Macedon ranges also has Bindi which has fab Pinots but you have to subscribe and buy a lot of wine to get the Pinot releases. I think the Bindi block 5 Pinot (double the price of the CF and then some) has the edge on the CF but it's close. Prefer the CF chards, but that's just my opinion.

So continuing the 1990's wines of Victoria.Tonight a Great Western shiraz from Seppelts.1999 vintage-

.

Still a darkred/purple colour.Full bodied and still some tannin. This wine will still improve for longer than most young wines you will see in the bottle shops today. What a pity this was only 1 bottle of a mixed dozen from a shiraz challenge.
So have to say B*fantastic.

Got Dan's 'secret deal' today: Wolf Blass Brown Label Shiraz 2012. I'm a fan of the Wolf Blass brand, have some of their premium labels at home and enjoy their table wines in QF J lounges.
I never tried Brown Label and was curious to see how good it is so opened one today.

Well, great buy at $26 no doubt about that. It's good full bodied wine now (needs to be decanted for a couple of hours to let it open up) but I think it will be much better in 4-5 years.

That's just the exothermic reaction I was concerned about! :)

And I was trying to get the thread back on track with a wine pic !

Oh come on... you know you love an exothermic reaction as much as the next "person" ;):p:)
But yes.. we better get back on topic before we get in trouble from QF WP again...

Sunday so I could get exothermic on this. Loverly base wine from Mount Difficulty, cellared for 2-3 years. Wonderful forest floor character, good fruit, CO spicy tannins with excellent depth.

I am a fan of old fashioned Vic reds. This is no exception.B*good.

Had this little number from Brash Higgins. Brilliant wine an exceptional example of what a straight Cab Franc can be.

I'll search it out (I notice that there are several PER outlets listed on his website). Will be interested to see how it compares to some extremely good straight Cab Francs I've had in the E US - most notably on the N Fork of Long Island (for those unfamiliar with LI, it has a thriving viticultural industry.)

Actually, D6, to save me running around town, where did you get yours please? Abbreviations will be understood ;):).

Woodlands once did a straight Cab Franc but don't appear to do so now. It was good, but IIRC a bit too big against my more refined US benchmark.

Purchased directly from the producer. Brash Higgins - News

Brad (aka Brash Higgins) was over in Perth a few months ago. Had the opportunity to try his wines with him and ordered through his Perth distributor (who also happens to be a personal friend) Grape & Grain: Wine & Drink Distributors Brad is a great guy and originally from the US.

I think Woodlands still do a Cab Franc, the Reserve de la Cave. A friend gifted me one, but I haven't tried it yet and not likely to in the next few years.

Let me know if you can't track it down in Perth and I'll ask my friend who might have current stock.

Here's a Savvy that UITA might like to try. It has good pedigree: maker and region. A little less steely than Shaw + Smith but still exhibits those nice Adelaide Hills characteristics that make a good aperitif and a good food Savvy.

Uppy, if your experience of Savvy has mainly been NZ stuff, I'd humbly suggest that you try a few from Australia before you visit Sancerre. Otherwise, frankly, you won't know what has hit you! It is almost impossible to recognise Marlborough SB (certainly the run-of-the-mill ones) as even the same grape variety as Sancerre or Pouilly Fume! The Aus stuff tends to hit the middle ground.

Apart from Cape Mentelle Wallcliffe, a very good NZ Pouilly Fume style is Cloudy Bay Te Koko (bear in mind that Cloudy Bay was started by David Hohnen, the Cape Mentelle founder. - Both now in the LVMH group.) Like Wallcliffe, it is not an aperitif... But it is certainly an alternative to Chardonnay with shellfish or fish. But, that said, oaked SBs probably aren't for everyone.

Tatachilla 2013 McLaren Vale Shiraz is currently available in the VA Lounges. This is one of the best wines that they have had in their lounges, so I had to have another glass
