Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I opened a1996 Penfolds Yattarna and it was a deep yellow. The cork broke in half but it came out ok.
Best white wine I have drunk and went well with the crayfish, crabs and crumbed red emperor for lunch.
My experience with Penfolds wines of this era is that a lot of the corks are dodgy and break or crumble when you try to open the wine. I wonder whether they bought a cheap batch?

Yes @Assassin this was the second Penfolds Yattarna cork that did this. The first one really went to pieces so the cork pieces had to be strained out.

Crumbly corks are a sign of dry old corks. Wine most likely either not stored in humid conditions and/or on it's side.

The latest one was in my wine fridge for the past 5 years or so inside our wine cellar. Yes it is low humidity down there but each bottle was held in a wine rack before making it into the Liebherr cool storage.

I'm sitting on (my last) one too. Always in back of my mind that its had its time. Great to see it still in there going strong!!!
Going to match with an '06 and '16 Yattarna to see their evolution. Might wait for the '26 to come out then do it 😄
