Serfty: That's a boring explanation. I was hoping for something much more interesting! :D

And it seems that the OP actually wants to get to Hobart. I think.
But he also says that he is flying in to SIN, rather than the original commencement in SIN, so there may still be confusion.

I'm referring to TheInsider's query:
Any reasoning why JASA's are so expensive these days, especially at the classic point level. $72+ for a SYD-MEL and 16,000 points.
Note that after 30th June, there's also a carbon levy to be included.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

The medicare levy is going up too I would expect or as an alternative there could be a bigger co-payment coming for the "rich"

Yeah, my ultimate destination is HBA, so I don't mind whether or not I come into MEL or SYD from SIN. But what I was trying to say is that, if I plug SIN-MEL or SIN-SYD into Classic Awards, then it comes up with availability on the A380 for direct flights. But if I plug in SIN-HBA, the system doesn't show any availability going through SYD/MEL on the A380, and will always route through PER, or BNE. And if I plug SIN-HBA into ASA, then the points needed rise to 500,000, as opposed to 90,000 for straight SIN-MEL/SYD.

I'd still go F A380....make the crew work for their money & sleep when I get home:mrgreen:

I'd do the same!

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Talking about FASA's, can I confirm that they are fully refundable? Talk on various threads here indicate the they are if you call to cancel prior to travel.

Reason being is that I am looking at booking a FASA SYD-LHR return next year for the two of us. It comes in at 768,000 points plus $3,000 in cash on QF1/2 which I don't consider too bad given that to buy the actual flights would be around $40,000. The reason that I may need to cancel is that work does not sort the leave roster out until much closer and I may just not get the leave closer to the time but obviously have to book the flights his far in advance to avoid the 1,000,000 + point legs

I think a lot of ASA's have the fully refundable prior to the commencement of travel rule so if you had a MEL/SIN/MEL you could cancel the whole thing prior to travelling MEL/SIN & get a refund but once you flew MEL/SIN you can't refund the SIN/MEL.

The workaround for this would be to book the ASA's as two one way fares ie do MEL/SIN in one pnr and SIN/MEL in another one so in effect you would be able to cancel the SIN/MEL after you had travelled MEL/SIN because they are separate tickets in separate bookings.

I can't see any FASA's for 24 Dec SIN/MEL or SIN/SYD but can see a Classic award in F for SIN/SYD (not SIN/MEL) on QF2 1950/0655 will cost 90K in points plus SGD340.60. The only QF non-stop SYD/HBA QF1019 doesn't depart until 1415 arriving 1610 in HBA which is 12,000 points plus AUD33.81 cash. Doesn't look like flying SYD/MEL/HBA is an option so I'd have a look at DJ to see if there's any mid-morning flights.

Can't see any Classics Awards in F/J nor FASA's or JASA's on QF10 SIN/MEL so they must've sold out.

IMHO you're better off getting a JASA SIN/BNE on QF52 3205/0710+1 for 60K plus SGD478.39 which is same Classic ie 60K (classic cash is SGD342.70) so at approx AUD130.00 more to earn SC & points you'd be mad not to.

Virgin have a non-stop flight DJ702 BNE/HBA 0925/1310 otherwise you're wasting too much time in SYD in transit when you could be spending it with your family.

Just had a look at this and when booking the LHR-SYD leg separately, the low point option books a First saver fare which does not allow a refund even before departure.

Bugger. It does seem weird that you can't get a refund on a First Class fare even just because the ticket is issued in another country.

Yeah I think i've given up on a FASA and will just go JASA instead. If I can though i'd want to try and avoid the 747/A330's just in case I get a Skybed I. I'll probably end up doing a JASA to MEL, and then just get the next closest JQ or DJ flight.

That's why the "fare rules" available when booking should always be checked and understood along with a screen print taken before committing.

We had a JASA MEL-SIN wich came with a $341 change fee each should we have wanted to change.

First Leisure class bookings ex Australia are non refundable for a lot of routes.

There are no JASA's or Classic awards left SIN/MEL on 24Dec, if you went SIN/SYD you wouldn't get into HBA until after 1600 or going via BNE seemed the most viable option arriving 1300ish.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Mrs Cat & I have booked one way JASAs to LAX in March next year; problem now is finding a cost efficient way to get back. We haven't been to South America before, so I thought I'd look for award flights coming back from Santiago. Surprisingly QF's booking engine doesn't even list it as an option, not even for Classic awards. Would this simply be that QF hasn't updated the software yet? Seems a bit odd, given that it is promoting it as a new destination.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

We kept getting dust out of LAX with QF so we ran up points with SQ Kris.
As a back up we have Velocity points as I am the fairy godfather booking up to 10 LAX departures a year.
You do need options and sometimes they don't include JASAs!

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Okay went ahead and booked some JASA flights on the 24th before it was too late.

SIN-SYD on QF2 (A380) on the 24th and then QF421 (A330) on the 25th. From there i'll get the 11.50 JQ Departure to HBA.

Cost: 60,000 Points + $501 SGD
Earn: 7112 Miles + 160 SC

I'm happy with it, this plus the Jetstar flight will get me home just in time for christmas lunch, and with a nice couple hours in the SIN and SYD lounge. Thanks for the help everyone.

I've been considering coming back via Japan or Hong Kong using JASAs, but I'm beginning to think we'd be better off booking one way from LA back to Melbourne with QF in Y or PE and then crossing our fingers for the upgrade lottery.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

I'm looking to book a couple of JASA's to MEL-HGK in August. There is a huge difference in points, (from 66,000 to >500,000) on the same flights. Can someone explain the difference ?

Class availability - I would say U class is available on the 66K option.

I hope you're travelling with carry on luggage only as if the QF421 arrives on time at 1105, you only have 15 minutes to collect your bag from the QF flight & bag drop it at JQ by 1120 which would be the 30 minute cut off for an 1150 departure to HBA.

I don't mean to rain on your parade but if you have checked luggage I can't see this scenario working.

Definitely do OLCI for the JQ flight MEL/HBA so you can get off QF421 then go directly to the JQ boarding gate with your carry on because even with carryon only, given your time constraints you could still miss the 30 minute cut off for JQ checkin.

Paid fare or ASA or Classic?

Around what dates would you be coming back? I'd call up QF Premium Desk & ask about availability of JASA's ex SCL & if they can book it & waive the assistance fee given that you can't book it online (yes I would say it's a programming issue).

You can always check "U" class availability on Expert Flyer & if not currently available set some 'Flight Alerts' in "U" & "W" classes (J & PE) so you get an email when or if seats do become available.

I've never had any problem with QF checking baggage through to a JQ flight, i've done it before with tight connections from HKG-MEL with QF, and then onwards to HBA with JQ.
