This thread is about booking any seat awards at the classic award level, which is what is happening, the cost of the points is low, so unless you have a good source of points it makes sense.

Yes it does, the cash component is a substitution for what normally would be points because they have brought it down to the minimum level, as per the example in the first post! Perhaps a picture helps?

He used the miniumum number of points allowed (64,000) and topped up the rest with cash.
This preserves your points so you can book lots of JASAs, which is good for people who fly a lot but don't generate lots of points.

If you can generate lots of points, by example by playing lots of bills for your business on credit card, then you would pay for the whole JASA with points.

These seem to be the two main types of users of JASAs - using all points or points + pay seems to depend on how easily your can regenerate your points balance. Hope this helps.

Just had a look next year for a JASA to the UK (late April / early May) and the cheapest was 541K per person each way... Or if using cash $22K plus 768K points...

I think some confusion might have arisen out of an answer I gave in another thread, where I incorrectly talked about ~40,000 points plus $x taxes. I shouldn't have mentioned taxes. It's just the cash component of the payment and isn't specifically for taxes. I was thinking about how I used to book classic awards. But as has been mentioned above, paying the maximum amount of cash possible in the points+pay scenario will preserve your points for future redemptions and appears to be the best value for ASAs.

Whatever you do, dont use the points + pay method from the normal flight booking engine, unlike the booking process shown on post 1, its poor value!

That would be a resounding Yes

I initially used (from the main page) Frequent Flyer > Using Points > Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards, then scrolled down to the "Booking a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award' section, then clicked on the link under "book your Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award" which takes you to the Frequent Flyer Sign-In Page. After signing in you are in the Award Bookings section.

If its a QF flight that earns SCs then yes, so JASA or YASA or even FASAs count.

If I take the example of SYD PER return - what is the SC difference between just booking it as a return flight compared to booking it as a multi City booking?

Are the more segments booked the better? If it was possible what advantage would something like SYD-MEL-ADL-PER-DRW-SYD give me compared to SYD-PER return?

More segments are better but only if the points cost of the flights in total isn't greatly outweighed by the SC earn by taking a direct flight.

For instance on an upcoming Sunday the direct SYD-PER JASA is 47,666 points, earning 80 SC (costing 595 points per SC).

That same day you could fly SYD-MEL-PER for 50,708 points, earning 120 SC (422 points/SC)

Or SYD-CBR-PER for 74,337 points, earning 160 SC (464 points/SC).

So for the above three flights, the one with the best bang for your points would be SYD-MEL-PER (ignoring other factors like type of aircraft and timings).

IMHO it's better to use the minimum amount of points & pay some cash (not talking about points & pay).

When you select your option from the Business Class (ie JASA) availability column the amount of points shown is for the all inclusive amount ie nil cash outlay.

When you proceed to the next step you can use the slider to scroll back to the minimum points required which is often the same amount as if you were doing a Classic Award & it will show you the cash outlay.

Eg TSV/xBNE/DRW all inclusive points is 36,000 vs 24,000 + AUD120.00 approx.

system. Platinum was just out of reach but with a small reorganization of flights I should achieve it in the next month or two. Well done all. Have to log off now. JASA Adelaide to Melbourne. Eighty bucks and 15k points. And double SC. BONZA
plan JASA Melbourne Sydney Adelaide return and platinum is just a few points away
