Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

To provide another data point on taxes fees, I recently managed, after scores of attempts and many 'generic errors', to successfully book a 140k redemption online, saving myself the phone booking fee. (Moreover, it is awfully frustrating to have to ring to get an estimate of taxes, which they seem to take ages to calculate).

I booked DUS-xJFK-YUL-xORD-xLAX-MEL-xHKG-DEL-xLHR-xMAD-ACC-xMAD-FRA using airberlin and iberia where possible to avoid fuel surcharges. Cathy was marginally cheaper than Qantas for taxes MEL-HKG.

Total taxes were 1095AUD, which seems reasonable given that Ghana has a 100USD departure tax. The QF LAX-MEL and BA DEL-LHR legs are the big fuel fines.

My apologies but although I have been a QF FF for many years I have not yet attempted to book any reward flights. Most appreciative if someone would run me through the procedure regarding Oneworld redemptions. Many thanks in advance.

The award booking engine does have "its moments" however.
Dont we all...

It's been four years since I used the thing to book 2 Y seats for what turned out to be a fabulous RTW trip for my daughter and I. I was chuffed to discover how easy it was and that it could all be done online by myself. Glad to see it hasn't been "enhanced" out of usability.

To save a lot of repetition suggest you start by reading up the info on both the QAN and Oneworld web sites. Most of what you want to know is there.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Out of curiosity what kind of taxes/fees would be applied to a 140K RTW redemption?

It would obviously depend on the countries visited but does anyone have any examples to get an idea?

I booked a RTW all in J (280k points pp) 2 months ago for travel in August and the taxes/fees were $1346 pp.

Our trip is Melb- Tokyo - Dallas - Cancun - Miami - Barcelona - London - Athens - Amman - Dubai - Hong Kong - Bris - Melb. (Stopover cities are in bold)
We are flying QAN from Melb - Tokyo and HK to Melb

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I've just finished booking two 280K J One World Awards, flying SYD-LAX, LAX-LIM-CUZ, IGU-LIM-JFK, JFK-LCY, LHR-ZRH, ZRH-LHR-SYD. The flights are QF for SYD-LAX and LHR-DXB-SYD, LAN for the South American flights and BA for JFK-LCY and LHR-ZRH and return. The total taxes were $1243.

My Son is travelling with me and we're doing the same as far as LHR, but while I go to Switzerland he is travelling to Jordan and his flights are SYD-LAX, LAX-LIM-CUZ, IGU-LIM-JFK, JFK-LCY, LHR-AMM, AMM-DXB-SYD flying Royal Jordanian for LHR-AMM and AMM-DXB. He'll arrive in Dubai at 1255 and will join QF2 for DXB-SYD at 0945 the next morning so will have an afternoon in Dubai. The taxes for his trip are $1478, obviously higher because he is flying out of LHR, whereas I am transitting through LHR from ZRH.

I booked all of our flights as soon as the dates we needed became available so had four lots of 3,500 points change fees but it was still worth it at a total of 294,000 points each for J on all international flights. The only Y flights on these bookings are the two connecting flights in South America - LIM-CUZ and IGU-LIM, where J isn't offered.

I've also booked some internal South American flights using a LAN South America Airpass. Using the Air Pass means that we get the J international baggage allowance for all South America flights. I booked CUZ-LIM, LIM-SCL with an overnight stopover, then SCL-GIG and AEP-IGR (Buenos Aires to Iguazu - Argentina side). The cost for these flights was $A846.60 each. I couldn't get from Rio - Buenos Aires with the Air Pass as LAN don't fly that route but I was able to book GIG-EZE with Emirates using QFF points for 18,000 points each + $36.80 taxes and $60 booking fee each. They would not waive the booking fee even though you can't book that flight online. It would have cost around $360 each for that flight.

Thanks for all who have posted the information I've picked up on this thread and other threads here on AFF. The suggestion to join the BA Executive Club was very useful as I could see the availability of LAN flights so when I called QFF I already knew what was available. I like that they show the number of reward seats available too.

Can these RTW's become JASA's or are they classic awards only?

Your best bet to ascertain the fees/charges is to dummy book a few different routings and see what pops up. A good start is to avoid LHR as much as possible.

My last RTW J award booking took me SYD-PVG-HKG-DXB-AMM-LHR-PHL,ORD-HKG-BKK-SIN-ADL-SYD for 280k points and $1300.00~. This has since been amended multiple times (in my favor thankfully) with no extra fees/taxes required.

Not really difficult at all.

Just start off as a Classic award and add destinations/dates as you see fit. The award booking engine will prompt the rest.

A few simple rules such as limit of 16 sectors, 35,00 miles, 5 stopovers etc.

Another recent ticketed example
for a 280K Business ticket

Route SYD-LHR-xLIN-MAD-xAGP-MAD-xFCO-LHR-SIN-SYD
Carriers__BA__BA__IB___IB___IB___IB___IB__BA__QF

Stopovers in Milan (Linate), Malaga and Rome.

Total charges $1,242... despite no UK APD.

Much better availability on BA versus any of the QF Dubai routes or even CX and MH

This may have been answered before, but do all segments come out of the classic award inventory [X, U, P] (or equivalent on other OW airlines)?

Do you get points/SCs for these RTW Awards ?
Or do they follow the "Classic Award" model of no points and no SCs ?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

No Points or SC's

They are still great value IMHO.

And they don't have to be RTW - they can go anywhere you like, within the constraints of the rules.

Can I just ask a quick question please. Is it ok to stop in hong kong both ways? Currently looking at booking the first leg for a friend syd-lax, however only availabilty is through hong kong, however the last flight of the RTW is Rome to syd which is also through Hong Kong. It appears to let me do it n line, but just wanted to check that it is ok with the rules.
thanks!

You can transit through the same airport more than once but can only have one stopover in the same one. Provided one stop in HKG is less than 24 hrs you'll be OK.
