Optus new $50 SIM only with roaming

So I'm thinking about porting out to another telco and porting back to the Optus Qantas plan. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm wondering how many days I need to be out of Optus service in order for me to port back to Optus again.

I bit the bullet and ported out from Optus to Amaysim. Yes, yes, Amaysim uses Optus network. I am happy with Optus coverage domestically as I live in urban area, but not happy that they forced me out from this plan.
With cost of living going up, monthly bill is now halved as a result of porting to Amaysim.

I will use the Amaysim roaming pack (which I think is generous with 365 day expiry on data/call/sms credits), if need to for my future travels, or get a local SIM or use wifi. For context, I am a recreational traveller and not a business traveller.

I'm leaning towards Amaysim too. Be interested to hear about your experience.

I've submitted a complaint using the online form but not really expecting any joy. On paper the low cost/prepaid operators plus either their roaming option or an ad hoc local/specialist esim (I have a dual SIM phone) should work out significantly cheaper than what I'm currently paying Optus, and much cheaper again than the new Optus plan + a daily roaming charge.

I have no immediate o/s travel planned, so thinking I might hop around through a few of them for a couple of months taking up their new customer offers to try them out and then settle on a long expiry prepaid plan with one of them.

Last year I ported from an Optus service to Telstra prepaid, then back onto the Qantas $79 plan. This was over the course of a week or so.

I wasn't able to transfer across without doing the port. At the same time I ditched my iPad sim and just hotspot from my phone now, so it was cost neutral for me.

What Ive noticed is that the resellers like Aussie Broadband and the cheaper pre-paid plans dont offer 5G only 4G.

Yeah, I've seen that -- I'm wondering how much you actually notice it in the real world. I guess it depends on what you are doing with your mobile data but for the kind of stuff I tend to be doing on the go, I can't say I can really tell the difference between 4 and 5G on my current Optus plan. I figure I can always come back to Optus later though if the experience is poor and I would be no worse off than if I had stuck with them.

I signed up to their 6 month plan with 150GB data. Did the port from Optus and was done in < 1 hour. I had temporary disconnection and downloaded the new eSIM from the Amaysim app when the porting was completed. The whole process was easy. I'm using the Amaysim service now and it doesn't feel any different, other than a cheaper plan overall. The roaming packs offered by Amaysim look pretty generous with 365 days validity.

Regarding the 5G, Amaysim does have 5G plan which is the $55 / 60GB / 28-day plan. While I was with Optus, the 5G is available for me mainly outdoors but not indoors. Honestly, I'm in the same boat with you, I couldn't tell the speed difference between Optus' 4G Plus and 5G.

Realised we'll need to stay with one of the big 3 due to apple watch support. Thinking that rolling over to the $39/mo optus offering is the default until a good telstra JB deal comes out.

Do note that the watch will still work as a watch on an MNVO, but you won’t be able to make calls or use data services on the watch without the phone nearby. I never go out without my phone so I decided to port out to a Telstra annual prepaid service when I got notified about this Optus change a while back.

Submitted TIO form Friday, and just now been contacted by an Optus "customer resolution expert" based in Adelaide.

Promising and friendly chat, he said keeping the old plan was not possible but suggested he could get my roaming inclusions moved across to the new plan, but needed to check a few things internally which may take a few days... so fingers crossed!

Finally got a call back from a "customer resolution expert" for the complaint I submitted via the website form last week (after repeatedly missing their call over the last few days for various reasons--my fault, but they somehow managed to pick the absolute worst times to call -- including while I was on my way through security at SYD yesterday afternoon).

She proposed moving me up from the $49 plan onto the $59 plan for reasons I didn't understand given it doesn't include roaming either, and applying a $15 monthly discount. So a net $5 discount, which is a bit derisory given others on here have been offered $20.

I'll be porting out tomorrow.

Similar bad news from my "customer resolution expert".

He's emailed me that "unfortunately the system rules do not allow any roaming inclusions to be added to the new plans otherwise I would be able to"

So I cheekily asked how does the system allow it on the Qantas plan -- he said he'd never heard of this plan before and couldn't find it in the system, and suggested it's no longer for sale! I sent him a link to https://www.optus.com.au/qantasplans.

Not quite the "expert" I was hoping for...

My "expert" has come back saying he found the Qantas plan (after I sent him a link to it) and he tried to switch my account onto it, but says "the system would not allow me to change as it needs a Qantas customer ID which only comes from being a new customer which unfortunately rules this plan out for an existing customer"

Instead he has proposed a $20 discount for 12 months on the Choice plan. Just emailed back to say I'm not happy with that because it would only cover 4 days per month of $5 roaming.

I also got an email from flybuys about these new plans, https://www.optus.com.au/flybuys - which look like they are still on the old system, so maybe roaming inclusions can be added to those.

I got that FB email also but unless I’m missing something, they don’t include int roaming or int calls/txt from Oz or while roaming?

You’d probably have to port out and back in to get the FB bonus points?

They don't, but as part of my complaint resolution I was told at first that my roaming inclusions would be moved across to the Choice plan, then they backtracked and said the system doesn't allow roaming inclusion add-ons to the Choice plans, and they are the only plans available now, so bad luck. I am wondering if the system will allow roaming inclusions to be added to these alternative flybuys (non-Choice) plans.

I also do not care about getting flybuys (or Qantas) points, I just want to keep the roaming inclusions being removed with this forced migration to a new plan.
