Cove. You've got that all wrong. The .5% Medicare increase is just to fund the federal bureaucracy to start the NDIS in 2018/19.

Yes Mrscove said give the money to the States to avoid a new Department of BS getting started.
In Western Australia our Labor opposition leader won't turn up for Gillard.

Apparently a Fairfax/neilsen poll has just been released.I can see reports in the News papers suggesting there might be a total obliteration of the ALP in QLD,WA,TAS and the NT.Funny that i can see no mention of it in the Fairfax papers.
If you google neilsen poll you get a link to today's article in the Australian which bypasses the pay wall.

If this nightmare scenario eventuates, Labor will collapse into a party with seats clustered into the eastern states of NSW and Victoria with a few more in South Australia and the ACT.
The party could fail to win a single seat in Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

How many of us live in marginal seats? I used to - Boothby (sadly just as stone throw from the High School that Gillard went too - thank god I didnt go there as we are of the same vintage); and then Adelaide. Now I live in Sturt, where the bulldog Christopher Pyne is now firmly entrenched as of the last election after originally being marginalish.

Growing up in a swinging seat was very good educationally as you did take note of the issues, and voted accordingly. As opposed to some here, who are in denial.

"Total obliteration of the ALP"

Oh that would be soooo good :)

This is why no one in the Labor party wants to challenge for leadership right now. Vultures circling come I think, 8pm election night. Depends on when Antony Green calls it.

I have to say listening to Julia lately even she's talking about a change of government; it's almost like she's thrown in the towel maybe the budget figures are even worse than predicted.

I know its a light-hearted comment, but you should be careful what you wish for - politics, like nature, abhors a vacuum.
Much as I detest the current government and its leader, I have voted for the ALP on past occasion for various reasons. Traditional Labour voters feeling disenfranchised with their own party will more likely contribute to the green menace than vote Liberal - I cannot see any alternative this time for these thinking, traditional Labour supporters who don't know what to do with their vote. A more powerful Green Senate dictating terms to the Lower House is a much more frightening thing than an incompetent Labour opposition IMHO.

Are there that many fools out there that think that the solution to our current problems (and their traditional political leanings) is to vote Green??? The hard lefties that have participated strongly in leading Labor towards this annihilation??? And they think the answer is more of the same???

I think a strong majority will be required by the Libs to undo some of the damage this current inept lot have done, and it will take some undoing... The last thing they need is to have wheel and deal and compromise with any of the people who got us into this situation, so beyond the obvious satisfaction of the message of rejection that will be sent to Julia and Wayne that an annihilation would convey, for practical purposes of righting the ship it would also be handy... Hopefully they'll know how to use it wisely...

With their increasing propensity for own-goals there is still plenty of time for them to obliterate their candidates in Victoria and NSW as well.. :) Don't put anything beyond this mob... Well, apart from competent government maybe... :)

Let me preface my comments by saying that Tony Abbott will be the next Prime Minister of Australia and life (for me at least) will carry on much as usual.

But .... the utter bollocks that pervades this thread makes me cringe to think that I have chosen to reside in this country, and makes me worry that I have done the wrong thing by my family. I don't know where to start with the farcical comments that the posters honestly believe are reasonable. Probably best not to try and inject balance into such an ugly mob - particularly when they have so many bags of gravel in their hands!

I want the Greens wiped out too!

If they do stop everything in the senate then hopefully TA will stick by his word & go for a double dissolution.

I'm sure a lot of people have a lot to fear from an all powerful TA government but financially from a totally selfish personal point of view I'm sure I'd be way better off. Hopefully Australia in general will be better off too but we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Given the increase in green primary vote in the recent Victorian by-election, it seems they are on the ascendency.

Moody George Orwell had your position worked out long ago-

It is all very well to be "advanced" and "enlightened," to snigger at Colonel Blimp and proclaim your emancipation from all traditional loyalties, but a time comes when the sand of the desert is sodden red and what have I done for thee, England, my England? As I was brought up in this tradition myself I can recognise it under strange disguises, and also sympathise with it, for even at its stupidest and most sentimental it is a comelier thing than the shallow self-righteousness of the left-wing intelligentsia.

Why is Tony Abbott so homophobic and won't allow a conscience vote? And no wonder why I said he had little conscience.

Yes feel free to attack the subject, not the poster.

Well if the poster is wrong...
And didn't Julia oppose a conscience vote?Is she homophobic too?

Unfortunately they have blown such a hole in the budget and stuck us all so deep in debt that i think everyone's shoulder will be required to the wheel... Even more so those that actually pay some net tax than those that scream about the pittance they pay, and then get even more back in welfare... Everyone loved the hand out phase, most never thinking about the longer pain of the pay back phase, or that someone would swoop in and pay their share back also...

So i can't think how the Libs will be able to come back with a magic formula to produce the money out of no where... Maybe rebuilding business confidence and a saner, more even balanced workplace relations environment will get some business making a few more investment decisions, employing a few more people that will bump up business tax receipts rather than the current mob who brought business confidence to lower than whale doo doo.... Cancel or delay some of the stupider, unfunded largesse until we have an ability to fund it, rather than just borrow some more and then some more after that...

But the leaches that think govt funding comes from an inexhaustible, reservoir could have a tough time adjusting to the real world....

Abbott will do what he said. I would very much like to see the greens go the way of the democrats, consigned to the garbage bin of political history.

I'm with you brother however, the way the ALP are treating the good people of Australia - I suspect it won't be that long before the Greens replace the ALP as the second force in OZ politics :(
