Mining in Africa, what that conflict diamonds and conflict oil deposits. No real mining is possible as too many countries that materials have to cross borders and
everybody wants there share. More likely a threat to China as manufacturing companies move from China to Cheap workers in Africa.
Now even more countries in conflict now over water rights (plus internal fighting), Egypt having arguments of their neighbors building dams on the upstream Nile. A never ending story.

Rather a wide brush.Diamonds are mined in South Africa,Botswana,Namibia which account for most of the continents output.None are responsible for conflict diamonds.
As for mining there are well over 100 Aussie mining companies now active in Africa. They disagree with your assessment.

Yes, but I suspect your examples are mostly going to be once-off employees taking the piss, and mine will be deliberate policies exercised against all employees.

There is a fundamental imbalance of power between employers and most employees.
Many employers handle this imbalance morally and ethically. A non-trivial proportion do not and, worse - albeit predictably - bad behaviour tends to be focussed on the weakest and poorest employees, those least able to act against it.
The two main ways that imbalance can be addressed are legislation and unionism. Good employers will not be bothered by either.
A Liberal Government, however, will be ideologically opposed to both.

So why do Aussie workers take more than double the sick days as those in the UK?

Have you seen their weather???

But seriously .... ignoring the author of the article and the fact that they are touting for business ... I would say that happy workers with flexible employers are far less likely to take sickies. Maybe there is still a way to go in this country before we recognise the benefits of a harmonious workplace.

So that's why sickies go up 30% in school holidays?
Or on Fridays?
All backed up by the ABS statistics.
And of course the UK has a conservative Government so that is why their bosses are better and workers happier.
Must ask Flashback and Mal about that.

Major sporting events make you sick too. Maybe the Ashes will make people sick? Actually the way Australia is playing that might actually be true.

That is indeed a two way street. Unfortunately some employees take a little bit of leeway as a sign they can stretch it until, well, it breaks!

So the failure of a couple of people (sainted business owners no less) to following building standards means the entire program to reduce Australia's energy consumption by insulating houses was a complete waste of time. I think some people have been sucked in by Abbott propaganda.

The Federal ALP is an example to us all.

It wasn't the fact that there were dodgy operators, but that Garrett had been warned, months before there were both dodgy operators and dangerous practices, and he did nothing about it.

There had been too many warnings over too many months - 13 of them, according to environment spokesman Greg Hunt - before Garrett finally got around to banning metal fasteners last November after one death. It was another three months - and two more deaths - before he put a stop to the foil-insulation scheme.

If the program was so bad , then why didnt people remove from their house (because 99.99999999% were happy they got this and solar power for free). Workers safety is a state matter. Worker safety around electrical matter is state matter. That why the state government charge business worker comp insurance. It is not a Federal matter.

The only argument that should be taking place is why in such small country we have state gov's and each one doing their own thing of safety and worker protection.

Because they didn't know it was unsafe until their house burnt down. It was a Federal matter; the Federal Government were funding it directly.

Still not one policy from My Sabbot and his supports. And still cant say anything good, even today when Australia again given Triple A rating..

Mr Internet of Australia , I guess is starting to see what support he can get from other members around him.

And obviously, if you don't know it's unsafe, then it's perfectly safe.

It's like the cartoon law of gravity.

To be fair, Liberal Party Federal policies can be downloaded in a PDF file in their front page - Home - Liberal Party of Australia

To be an informed voter, we should at least skim through the policies of Labor, Liberal and Greens. The policies are on their website, some are easier to read than others.

Personally, as I stated in my earlier posts, that Labor's policies will benefit me financially. But it will come at a cost to Australian economy via unfunded overspending, debt and toxic (unfinished) asset.

I would assume (but admittedly have no stats to hand) that whilst the overall rate of "sickies" is lower in the UK, the patterns of use would probably be much the same. Impromptu long weekends always involve a Friday or Monday.

And school holidays? I wouldn't give you any odds that my wife will last the next 2 weeks without telling me one night "You've got the kids tomorrow - just get them out of my sight!". I am fortunate that I can be flexible in my work hours - others only have the option of planning well ahead or taking a sickie.

Maybe there is some truth in this article :- Workers are being put under pressure not to take sick leave, MPs warn | Guardian Careers | Guardian Professional
