Who knows maybe super Kev has found some extra money to dish out another load of $900 cheques before the election. I'm sure he could pay for it with some sort of levy

Seems like the casinos around OZ can do with it;)

Well who does Jamie Packer support politically? I'm sure he'll give them good media coverage in return for lots of bonus cheques being distributed.

He's employed half the losers that once inhabited the NSW ALP!

The issue is that Slipper is not permitted to pay back the $900 under the "Minchin protocol", as Abbott was permitted to do to avoid referral to the AFP for inadvertently slugging the taxpayer in promoting "Battlelines".

Instead Slipper is being prosecuted by the AFP cheered on all the way by Abbott, Brandis and co.

Why one benefits (Abbott), and not the other (Slipper)? Smells of hypocrisy right?

BTW, the only reason Abbott is desperate for an election now is for fear someone in the know on Ashbygate will spill their guts to protect themselves, bringing the whole rotten show down around him.

And you only mentioning TA only is not hypocrisy?
And Ashbygate is THE reason for wanting an early election?Wow.
As I was told many years ago if there is ever a choice between a stuff up and conspiracy in politics the stuff up wins every time.
As I have said here before Mal Brough would have beaten Peter Slipper for preselection in 2010 but the formation of the LNP came with a condition that no sitting member be opposed.

Are the Packers such media players now? It's not like the days when Kerry controlled pretty much everything.

He may not own much (if any) but I'll bet the new owners wouldn't go against his wishes,

I know what you mean but Jamie has never really been interested in media, and the Germans who now own ACP aren't likely to care about his ambitions.

It sure looks like Rudd wishes to go to the UN so that means the election will be later rather than sooner.

No he asked for an election to be called which means not just setting a date but actually issuing the writs for an election. So here is TA asking JG to call an election for August 3 just before she was rolled.August 3 was the earliest possible date to hold an election if the writs were issued that day.
So a very big difference.

Everything I've seen wrt Rudd to announce the date. That is not the same as calling an election. The point remains they attacked Gillard or setting a date and now they are attacking Rudd for not setting a date.

Re: 3 August I'm pretty sure I heard that 3 August would not work with the senate election requirements. Hence costing more to hold a half senate election later. So TA is a complete goose for even suggesting that date.

No here is the quote from TA the first day of Rudd's second coming-
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott called for the election to be brought forward to August 3 from September 14 because of Labor's "paralysis''. He said voters should decide the PM, not the faceless men of the Labor Party.

The half senate election can be held on any Saturday within one year of the term of the retiring senators. So could have been held any Saturday after July 1 this year.So Tony Abbott is not a goose re the election date.

I'm talking about what has been called for since then and I specifically mentioned Turnbull on qanda. Whatever he said on one day, seems to have changed since then.

Hmmm ... you must have been watching a different program from me - unless ABC have change the content: (Reforms, Solutions & Compromise | Q&A [8 JUL 13] | ABC TV)

MALCOLM TURNBULL: Well, I am very touched by Anthony's concerns about democracy but the Prime Minister should be chosen by the people of Australia and the time to do that is at an election and we should have an election now.

...

MALCOLM TURNBULL: Well, look, Tony Abbott is not refusing to debate Kevin Rudd. What he is saying is if we are going to an election, if you call an election, I'll be there at the Press Club.

...
Not one mention of date or dates - simply "call an election"!

Well I don't know what you are reading-

"I say to Mr Rudd, don't be scared of the people. End the uncertainty, name the date, make it sooner rather than later, let's get on with it."

That was the 9th of july.
And on Q&A Turnbull said this-
"If on the other hand Mr Rudd wants to have an early election and we certainly agree that's a very good idea... then of course Mr Abbott will debate him in the National Press Club or anywhere else," he told the ABC Q and A program.

Note-an early election.

The machinations revolving around Lalor have been very entertaining.

I see the new - now ex-canditate from DFAT has had her ambitions shafted. That interview was hilarious!

Wonder how her career will progress......can't think of many posting worst than PNG however, I'm sure they exist.

Watch the media change their focus and turn Abbott/Turnbull into a leadership saga.

Rudd tried that yesterday. The thing is that unlike the ALP, nobody in the Liberals is pushing for Turnbull. Maybe different if the Coalition's polling was below 30%. You get all sorts of desperation when that happens.

In comparison to Gillard (and obviously Rudd the first time) Abbott runs a pretty tight ship. There isn't much in the way of division or revolt.

Depends if you believe the media report the news or make the news!

Having been media, and spent some time hanging over the press gallery railing looking at Abbott and Turnbull, no, there's not a lot of making news going on. That sort of thing only goes so far, and journos making stuff up run very low on trust after a while.

When there's a push on, everybody knows it and the journos fall over each other to get the juiciest quotes.

Turnbull might display some selfish ego-centric behaviour from time to time, but he's not stupid. Neither are his colleagues. Well, desperation makes people do foolish things, but they aren't desperate.

Looks like the wheels are starting to roll.....Malcolm Turnbull says many prefer him to Tony Abbott

Couple of Abbott memes.

New Nielson polls out, these are monthly so the first one since the spill.

So it's a 12% gain for ALP 2PP in QLD and SA, 11% gain in NSW and 2% gain in WA

Of course, Rudd said the same thing, and when it comes to honesty, Turnbull and Rudd are siblings.

What does that make Tony - my spoken word can not be trusted because I say things in the heat of the moment that contradict what I said earlier - Abbott?
