If overseas countries are our yardstick then we are screwed. I detest such cop outs. And I'm not bothering with the rest of the post.

They seem to be the yardstick that the opposition use. Greg Hunt was braying on about various European countries on Q&A last night, and Eleventy Joe (the man who would be Treasurer) has been known to compare our economy to Greece and Spain. You can't have it both ways.

Isn't that the whole point?

A reasonable graph is more than acceptable. Posting a whole series of graphics and ignoring all but one is not acceptable. I can only think of one poster who has done that.

Wonder who that is? Haven't seen any evidence of that myself.

Which leaves the question of running a business. Peter Costello admitted that he couldn't manage his mortgage an hence household budget. But I suppose you lot think he was qualified to run the countries budget.

Well his side of the graph looks a lot better than that of the worlds greatest treasurer

Ah, but the question was about experience. If never running a business disqualifies someone from commenting then Costello had no place running the country if he couldn't run a house. Or perhaps experience is no measure of capability.

I never used the word disqualify or forms thereof.

I did employ the phrase 'may affect any experiential credence', no more and no less.

Oh you missed the set of graphs from the Australian that someone posted?

Oh, that was me.......you must have me mistaken for someone else as I've got NFI what you're going on about!

The key difference is big Mal didn't try to bluff his way through. He recognized his limitation and owned it.
What limitation? That he wasn't experienced in political jargon?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the professional politicians - the staffers, the student unionists, the heirs of political dynasties, the golden boys - were sidelined in favour of the sort of representatives for whom every vote was a conscience vote?

The sort of people who speak from the heart, not from a script.

I thought that's what he has a fellow parliamentarian, known as the Treasurer, to do? Surround yourself with people who are better than you (at their jobs). That's what I do

A nice use of selective data to support your argument. What about including the timescale of when the world (and by definition Australia) enters recession.

When things are going well the party in power should be accumulating a large surplus to tide us through the hard times. However, the Liberal party (including the wannabe PM Abbott) squandered billions of dollars on middle class welfare instead of saving for the inevitable bad times. They left a small surplus which was used by the Labor government to shield Australia from the worst of the GFC.

In this instance statistics are like a bikini, what they reveal is interesting, what they conceal is essential.

Actually I put up no argument Hvr . I merely commented that I wished it went back further to show the long term trend. Then (and only then), a comment could have been put forward to discuss the trend. Seems you have been quick to judge

So by the same argument, haven't Labor squandered billions on lower class welfare and pink batts, inappropriate school buildings, etc? Each has made decisions that whilst seemed appropriate at the time, had unintended consequences that have subsequently been far reaching.

In this instance statistics are like a bikini, what they reveal is interesting, what they conceal is essential.
Great quote :D. Will have to use tha some day in a presentation.
