(spoiler warning............this is painful to watch and thank god Peter Overton mercifully cut it short)

Pretty good interview....stayed focused & applied pressure on the real issues.

Tony, articulated he didn't care who he faced........however, reading between the lines I'm very confident that he's happy facing the current dud that holds office:D

One assumes he has access to the internal polling that perhaps shows a loss of biblical proportions.
Why stand.. nothing to gain in leading a mob of losers to political oblivion.
Later.. well thats different.. he will be able to feed his revenge muscle on all the truths that will appear once the election is over.
I was planning/hoping to have drinkie to celebrate the demise of the worst pm since billym...but decided that the outcome was even better for the Libs.. bring it on.

billym = Gough Whitlam, correct? ;)

Rudd will be back for sure

I think he wants Gillard to be humiliated at the election

I'm glad she won because with her at the helm they have no chance

Any sympathy for the grunts that led the charge? Body count: Rudd supporters quit their posts

Like a gutless General that likes to wear medals - Rudd, decided to leave the field of battle.......loser, is the word!

Were the Grunts told to lead the charge? Or were they just hoping the momentum whipped up would get Rudd to throw his hat in the ring? If anything, KRudd comes out looking more Prime Ministerial than either the incumbent or the alternative by sticking to what he said last year and staying out of it.

As to why Simon Crean did what he did, maybe he banged his head in the shower this morning, or maybe this was a cleverly orchestrated charade to get him to throw himself under the bus and have a "spill" where no one challenges the sitting PM; quashing down the media speculation (fuelled by News Ltd. papers in the preceding days).

Bet Tony has already started picking furnishings for The Lodge and has rung Johnny to ask him if he'd like to be the next GG.

Hopefully he's bought Australian made and supporting Australian jobs - after claiming to support Australian jobs but buys budgie smugglers that were made in China* ;)

Yeah - it was a pretty good interview for Tony Abbott. At least this time they pulled the string all the way out!

I withdraw my "dumb and dumber" cheap-shot. It is actually dumber and dumbest.

No matter how you look at it - it was a gutless performance.

To watch colleagues standup & be counted only to leave them swinging in the wind is a spineless, gutless, despicable act! I'm starting to believe that Gillard & her sorry pack of losers did all of us a favour.

Thank Christ - he is not leading this Nation. Now, we only need to get rid of the ranga.

No, that shows your inexperience in these matters.
Tony's already lost once to Julia and scared to death of her humiliating him again.
He's already bested Rudd, but Julia is too good for the moron from Manly.

As for the polls.............the bookies are rarely wrong..............on the last poll before the election. With 6 months to go, it's Julia's to win.
I'm officially excited. I can almost here the theme music from Rocky.

So where do you find swimmers that aren't made in China, Vietnam or Fiji?
At exactly the time that Gillard was running around the country sprucking her billion $ Australian Jobs plan in February, a Melbourne company, H. Leffler and Son, announced that it was importing $42,000 worth of leather from Scotland to recover the sofas and chairs in Ms. Gillard's private office and dining room in The Lodge...
Obviously no upholsterers in Canberra and no Aussie leather available anywhere in Australia and impeccable timing as always.

How is it that bindi irwin was never a shoe in?

Me - colonial???? Hardly.

My parents were from one country (arguably two), I was born in another, and now live with my family in a third. Tends to temper the nationalistic fervour a bit, and makes me scratch my head at the internecine squabbles between the states and territories (and sub-squabbles between capital cities and regional areas).

Why can't Australians (and I include both citizens and permanent residents) see themselves as Australians, rather than sandgropers or mexicans or banana benders or whatever? Isn't it about time to grow up??

Australians like to rib each other as that is in our competitive nature, but by and large we are an easy going, supportive, tolerant type people of each other and others (of course we are not perfect in saying that)... The colonies/states developed separately and we still have hang overs of that as I was describing to some visiting Indonesians today and the States and feds are continuing to try to reduce that, but they are minor compared to most other countries.. We have never had any civil wars where the states or different parties went to war like the US, English, Russians and most other countries have...

.... and 'Australia' could give you the Collins Class submarines as a starter for your Defence Force.

When i read that reply last night about all WA needed to pay back, i was going to say could we just give you back the Collins subs at Fleet Base West and we call it quits but didn't get around to it...

Seems no one wants to be saddled with the Collins Class coughy prize... :)

And as others have said here, what an odd, odd day... It just gets more bizarre... Couldn't watch it unfold as i was out and about (as opposed to living in here as someone has suggested) so only got to watch the replays of it when i knocked off... Watched Latham tonight commenting on it all, bit like Keating, even if you don't really like him much still interesting and as usual he didn't hold back about many of the players... :) Not sure about anyone else but I'd be seriously worried if this sort of nonsense was in evidence at the running of the local chook raffle let alone leading the country (or letting it sort of run on cruise control)

I can't see how Rudd will be back eh, the only reason they would draft him back now would be utter desperation, and even then its more than likely they would knife him again if a miracle happened and they were re-elected somehow...

When Julia gets trounced, I'm imagining Shorten will come in as the saviour... If he can be bothered hanging around in opposition for 10 years or so to have a crack at being PM...

Interestingly: "Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor and Andrew Wilkie voted with the coalition in their motion of no confidence."
A motion of no confidence needs an absolute majority of the entire House. That's 76 votes, rather than a majority of those present.

However, the message was clear. Moments after Gillard herself announced a leadership spill, Abbott was highlighting the fact that the Prime Minister did not enjoy the confidence of her own party.

And the message to the voters is equally clear, summed up in the word used by every media outlet reporting the day. Farce.

This should have been a good news day for Gillard, delivering an apology to victims of government abuse, but instead, this story came in third after the leadership farce and the end of her media legislation.

My take from this is that her polling is going to drop even further.

Rudd may well have his old job back. He made it crystal clear what terms he wanted, and if it takes the destruction of Julia Gillard, that's exactly what he wants.

But that's still better than bringing in a "foreigner" on a 457 visa as your media liason as there are no qualified Aussie journalists.
