Platinum Card, what will I get for $900

I don't believe so. The charge cards all look alike, unlike co-branded cards and those Amex cards issued by banks.

IIRC, the US issued cards have different starting numbers, which is what they use to determine access. If it's not a US AMEX charge card format number, you don't get access I believe.

I think there was a discussion on another thread that it was the four digit number next to your name that determined the country of issue.

I have a feeling that will only apply to US-issued cards..

I received a brochure from Amex reminding me of all the platinum benefits. I am sure in that it mentioned AA lounges. I'll go looking for it.

On my trip to the US, I flashed the Amex charge card for entry to Delta lounge, Priority pass at CO' lounge in LAS, and QF card at LAX for AA lounge. Being QF, AA offered 2 drink vouchers. The other clubs had free drinks but ubiquitous tip jars for obvious reasons.

On top of these benefits there are a few other little gems I like about my Platinum.

Concierge Booking Service - Book hard to get seats at sporting, concert and theatre venues. Also a great one is Last seat availability at restaurants. It seems Amex have done some sort of deal with a lot of top restaurants around the country/globe. you can call up at 6pm, and be sitting in a restaurant at 8pm (and it has been booked out for weeks!).
By Invitation Only - I have been invited to some great events over the last year. Highlights would be - BMW drive day, Golf day at Kingston Heath, and the Grange Hermitage tasting evening! :D

If you take up the complimentary platinum credit card that comes with the platinum charge card are the MR points you earn on the credit card simply added to your charge card's Ascent Premium balance?

Yes, they both use the same MR account.

Thanks. I just received my platinum charge welcome pack and it doesn't include an application for the complimentary credit card so I will ring up and request one.

Not much.
Look at Ultimate unless you really think the concierge idea might help you.
It is half the price and you get the free flight and varible numbers of bonus points after signing and starting use.
Hi I had a Centurion..yes the Black Amex for 5 yrs and gave it back to have my Platinum Card.. I received the same service and very similar benefits 1.5 Frequent flyer points per $. A Priority pass... I love the Concierge service the same staff service Centurion Holders. I use them as a personal assistant. They have managed to get 5 people into Qantas Club... get me great bookings...to shows restaurants ...its a fabulous card .

Hey Jocelyn, how did you get them to get you access for the Qantas club? Were you an existing lounge member? I have asked Plat concigerge and Plat travel (who in my opinion are very average in service and price) about one off lounge access or passes and they say, oh we are not affiliated with any lounge providers ???

I personally dont think the priority pass lounge access is that great, I have used it in Fiji and Tokyo (Narita) and I think either Qantas club or Air NZ Koru is better.

Hi,
I would never use Plat Travel, I agree they are average. Qantas Club is far superior I am a member with a low Bronze status as I fly regularly using points by running my business through my credit cards. Priority Pass is great if you are not traveling Business or Qantas better than sitting waiting around in the airport. I do have great relationships with several of the Concierge staff and I really do use them at least 3-4times a week like a P.A. I am happy to share their names with you.

You must be busy if you call them 3-4 times a week

Ok that would be good, I can try them out, PM me of you like with the names.

I have several trips to NZ in the next 12-18 months and maybe a family holiday to Fiji if we can fit it in, so I was tossing up if I should pay for a Koru membership or join the Qantas club through AFF and get the discount rate. I guess I was questioning the costs as against trying to get some lounge passes from somehere.... Actually Qantas gave me some a few years back when I had a large amount of FF points .....

Just remember there is no Qantas club in Nadi, and a Qantas Club member cannot use the Air Pacific lounge either. Need to be OW Saphhire or above.

Priority Pass have a lounge in Nadi, although like most things Fijian it can be hit and miss in my opinion .....

If PP lounge at NRT is better than QF or NZ, then it must be fairly grim! QF at NRT is one of the worse I have come across - dead soup spoon next to empty soup bowl for entire time while in the lounge. And that was the good bit. :( Will probably fly JL next time.

Yes it was very average at NRT, but it was nice to be away from the crowds and the flight left later at night so it was nice from that point of view to relax before boarding, but yes I agree a very average P/Pass lounge at NRT.

Having read through T&Cs looks like a reasonable policy (dated 10 Aug 10).

Couple of comments on what I saw as positives and negatives.

Roadside Assist. Only applicable if on a Trip. A Domestic Trip is more than 150km from place of residence. Does however have provisions if under 50km from home.

Special Sports. Surprisingly only Solo Diving is listed, so Scuba Diving is assumedly covered (Which is rare)

Inconvenience cover. Kicks in at 4 hr delay on departure.

Medical Emergency Expenses cover. Excludes any costs incurred in Australia, so if you are medivaced back to Aus but need further treatment you are on your own.

Resumption of Journey cover. Only for original itin where at least a fortnight left.

Personal Baggage. $30k cap with $5k for any one item

And my biggest negative find.

Loss damage waiver.
Not cover loss if retail purchase price of vehicle is in excess of A$70k. (per exclusion 6) :!::!:
So the potential class upgrade you may get as a result of status may mean your insurance disappears.
