Platinum Shadow - how does it work?

Took 2 737s last week. Row 4 had the middle seats blocked, however these must've opened up at check in as instead of a shadow between the 2 WPS, the seat was filled. (whY would anyone pick a middle seat on a 737?)

The middle seats represent one third of the aircraft's seating. Someone has to sit there ;-)

Recent experience would also suggest to me that the Company making the booking comes into the equation. Flew with an International Resource company and although only PS, got exit row and first row in Y as seating choices. No complaints of course.

Well yesterday my chosen flights went askew and the Qantas lounge angel was able to get me on a flight in a couple of minutes. She advised me that there was only a middle seat and that the plane was boarding in a few minutes.

Whilst not my usual spot it was a seat on a plane home at very short notice and very gratefully received.

In BNE the other day the lunchtime Dash8 flight to CBR was cancelled and it was announced pax would be rebooked on the 737 service (at 2). That’s 78 potential empty seats suddenly taken.

Flew yesterday on a Q400, CL member 'Member for Gregory' in 1B with 1A shadow, followed by WP 'myself' in 2C with 2D shadow.

I don't think this is the WP shadow as such more a case of QLink 'P' blocking seats for trim purposes. WP shadow seats would just have the 'R' symbol on the seat map.

Heaps of people move themselves out of window & aisle seats into 4B or 4E because any seat in row 4 is seen as the holy grail to some folk.

I once moved to an earlier flight and was moved to a row 4 middle seat, I think it was the only seat on the plane left. I have also had cases where it seems that passengers with connections were manually assigned row 4 middle seats so they could get off the plane quickly. Also had some very tall and very large passengers seated in row 4 middle seat, apparently manually assigned those seats for their size.

I think this is likely, too. Until recently, I was PS, but usually had exit row seats available and always had a vacant seat next to me unless the flight was packed. I work for one of Qantas' biggest customers. I've recently hit SG and this hasn't changed.

Are these symbols visible only to QF staff (eg. lounge agents)? If so, does a lounge agent have discretion to then choose to allocate a R-blocked seat to a passenger?

The flight was fairly full, although there was a row a few back that had no one in the A/B seats strangely.

As for trim, there was a group sponsored by QFLink (had it on their shirts) with a ton of excess baggage, tents and all sorts of camping equipment and that was all loaded into the back of the plane so I’d have thought balancing it out with a few more up the front would be the go? Then again, don’t know anything about trim on a plane.

I was just happy to be in 2C!

It seem with international these days, shadows for WP tend to happen when the flight is rather lightly loaded.

We had a shadow in the exit row a few weeks ago MEL-SIN. Flight definitely wasn't full, but at a guess I'd say was about 80-85%.

I had 3 shadows on a BKK-SYD flight recently. ;) Makes up for all the times I did not have a shadow. :p

Even though one cannot use the extra room in a bulkhead with fixed armrests it sure is better not having someone next to you and much much quieter....

Just curious, what is e/f? another website? thanks :)

actually, just realised, it shows blocked as if someone has no status so cant really check if have a shadow or not unless sitting at the back of the plane....

You can enter your QF WP number into the EF preferences, and it then returns seat maps based on the seats available to you as a WP ;)

oh right, so you mean a wp cant sit next to a wp until cabin occupancy is above a certain %?
