PM returning from Hawaii

Fair comment. I'm sure he's regretting that spur of the moment comment. The flip side to all that - a state police commissioner is a very, very, long way, away from a PM.

One needs to remember that these things are all state controlled matters. I'm looking forward to federal intervention that dictates land management in-line with reality.
And additionally she was actually in charge of the operational aspect at that time. In another life I was part of a statewide emergency safety exercise back in the early ‘80’s. And the Police Chief was top dog.

suze2000 Christine Nixon was in charge of emergency services that day.Criticism was deserved.
Scomo is not in charge of emergency services.

No. But he is the leader of the country. That trumps the head of emergency services in so many more ways in terms of morale?

Maybe the folks directly impacted by the drought and fires, if asked, will say they don't care if he's here or not.

Yes I understand that. I believe he was there a few days ago? It’s been going for weeks. I think the tragic deaths brought it to the fore again. If those had not occurred would this have been raised? Two deaths in Adelaides fires this week and no thought given that sco mo should make any appearance here.

it’s pretty sad that a family holiday ends up being somewhat overshadowed if not ruined by a silly unnecessary decision to pretend it wasn’t happening. So often, the truth is much better than the obfuscations that seem to be de rigueur now.
And, I can’t see the point of all this trying to work out who is more worse than the next person. I just hope something good comes out of this mess.

No one has ever said the PM shouldn't have a holiday. Indeed, the ALP has studiously avoided commenting on the matter.

The PMs office usually puts out a press release advising that he is on leave and that the Deputy PM will be in charge. This wasn't done. The PMs office refused to comment as to whether or not he was even on leave. Refusing to follow protocol is not appropriate.

Also, as a marketing man Scott Morrison should be aware of perceptions and what actions by a person with a public profile will attract publicity and why.

He should also be aware that he has a public role and that sometimes he just needs to turn up, have a few sympathetic words and listen to the people, His advisors should have told him this and if they did, he should have listened.

The only time a PM should 'disappear' is when they're visiting the troops in a war zone. When this is occurs the press knows and maintains media silence until their return. This most recently occurred a couple of days ago when the Governor-General went to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The country is in a crisis and needs its leader to be front and centre to comfort and reassure the people. Also, to determine what is needed now and what can wait.

I don’t have feelings either way about the PM but don’t see the fuss about him leaving the country for a break. Fires etc have been ongoing for awhile, not a sudden emergency. There is little they can actually do other than photo ops etc.

I actually think it is a good thing to take a break. Sometimes you simply need to stop and get away, so you can rest and recharge and be prepared for the next period ahead. Burnout is not good for anyone.

And who knows - perhaps there are other personal issues at play. Family health issues etc.

You can’t look after others if you don’t look after yourself.

My guess is he booked this on double SC many months ago and needed to fly on those dates to retain status as his year is end Dec :p

Given ScoMo spent reportedly $1.3M in his first year as PM on travel (and a member of QF-CL), he is probably not counting SC's at this stage.

I don't know if I'm lacking empathy or what, but if the people working under ScoMo are tasked with looking after the government while he's away, why does he need to come back? Isn't it analogous to your manager or boss going away on holidays and you are paid to look after the office?
Short answer: no it's not analagous.

It’s interesting. Out State Premier is taking the perceived error of Sco Mo being absent, by being the one holding the press conferences about the SA Fires. It does actually make for a good leadership action. Yes, we have had fires here in the last couple of days and two lives lost and several in hospital with severe burns. Many properties lost. Do the Eastern States even hear about this?
Yes we do, and we also saw it on Sky News UK (while catching up on the latest on Brexit).

Victoria's police commissioner got into trouble for going out for dinner on the night Victoria burned. So it's not without precedent that a figure in authority will get this sort of negative feedback.

She went to dinner, met with her book publisher and had her hair done. All while having direct responsibility for an immediate emergency service during an on-going emergency. As opposed to the PM ho has NO direct responsibility for any emergency service.

ETA: it's worth knowing too that ScoMo's cult WANTS the world to end, and they also believe that if bad things happen to you, it's because you didn't pray enough, and if you are poor it's because you didn't tithe enough (because their version of god rewards people who give money to their version of a church) , and if you get sick, you deserve that too because you didn't pray enough.

Fair dinkum - you want to stand by all that? I thought Twitter was bad ...

Anyway, like I said, everyone should be happy now that the PM is back in the country. Everyone's morale will skyrocket, the rains will come, the fires will go out and we can enjoy the cricket on Boxing Day. I mean, that's what you all are saying, isn't it? That's why it was so important that the PM returns, right?

Right?

Jeez Rooey you got a few ice creams under the belt tonight or just spoiling for a blue?

Ha ha. No ice-creams for me. Here in eastern Tas its another pleasant evening, as it has been all week. Scallops and raspberries for dinner, and I just watched 'The Two Popes' on Netflix. Interesting story.

I perceive some hysteria about the PM not being in the country during its annual bushfires crisis. Some seem to think he needs to be on-deck while others seem to think hes wishing everyone dead. Poor bloke just wanted to spend some holiday time with his family when he's otherwise on call (literally) 24/7.

Fancy that! Awful man.

Everyone - get a grip. Have a read of this and thank your lucky stars.

But was anyone bumped? That seems to be an important question for the OP.
Actually what the thread is about.
All the other garbage has been off topic.
