PM returning from Hawaii

When there is a debate going on, as well as the arguments presented, I look at who is presenting the other side. In this one I'm pretty comfortable :)
There's a word for that, it's prejudice.
I judge arguments on their merits, regardless of who makes them.

I certainly had no issues with him staying exactly where he was.

Was a fair response until thisProlly not one of the better things I have seen posted recently - but in the words of Admin this is a social media site - or UNsocial depending on how you look at it
Look at RooFlyer's post 55 and see what he was replying too when he used those words.

I can't believe those tacky shirts they are selling with the PM's face on them

At least some of the money will go towards the fire fighting effort
I think they could make quite an iconic fund raiser to be honest. Like the things that are worn during the special days of cricket. But I’d like all proceeds to go to the fire fighting effort. Something must be done to reimburse them.

Agree, it’s unbelievable what the firefighters have to put up with. I I think anybody who would really like to support the firefighters etc but don’t want to go to all the trouble that this entrepreneur has gone to which has really caught the attention of very many people, they could just make a donation to one of the many funds that are set up or set up a fund themselves.

I expect that people would much prefer to donate to a centralised agency and not to a fund set up by an entrepreneur. They may however purchase a shirt from one. There hasn’t been anything set up for SA people yet as it’s too early.

We have an annual event that runs in the western end of The Shire, where Santa comes around with the RFS trucks and personnel. Visits places like Como, Jannali, Loftus etc. Last year Santa travelled in the modern style in an open top Merc. This year in a vintage car. It usually comes after our main fire season here (Oct/Nov) and people queue up along the roadside to donate cash in exchange for a bag of sweets for the kids. Our RFS knows exactly how much our community values them. After all, we live next door to them!

Of course many of those people criticising the PM had a different tune with a former PM.
"The prime minister's presence at the bushfires is causing a security headache, taking him away from his work and looking increasingly self-indulgent. It's time he dropped the hose "

Interesting to see commentators conflating global climate change and these terrible (but by no means historically unique) fires and the ongoing drought ( also historically not unique in scale or intensity) for political point scoring while ignoring the reality that many of these fires were deliberately lit or due to natural causes eg. spontaneous combustion, lightning strikes. The issues of fire prevention and fuel management definitely warrant further public discourse, but this needs to be evidence based and unfettered by emotive political prejudices...wont hold my breath

As far as I am aware all call centres for charities, all charity collectors in the street and in the shopping centres (called ‘chuggers’, short for charity muggers), and on the phones all take a cut, (assuming we are not talking about scams).
Donating directly does solve that problem. The charities do feel they need to employ people to collect on their behalf though.

I used to donate regularly to the RFS Association when their tame call centre got on the blower. Then I found out the call centre was making as much money as the RFS (ie taking at least 50%) so switched to the direct donation method.

Fair dinkum - you want to stand by all that? I thought Twitter was bad ...

I do. Listen to the podcast. It's only 15 mins.

And I never said that Cristine Nixon was right, what I said was that ScoMo agreed that it was a bad decision (and it was - no doubt about it) and what's good for the goose etc. The PM may not be responsible for the situation, nor can he miraculously make it rain, but he could be on hand to offer comfort, support, I dunno, solicit his cult for donations to the RFS and do something real with their money for a change, organise a telethon etc.

You can’t look after others if you don’t look after yourself.
Yeah, but the firies have been working for weeks straight by now haven't they? And I'd lay odds their job is a darn sight harder than ScoMo's. He should charter a plane to take all of them to Hawaii.

On donating to the RFS (slightly off topic )my parents lived out frenches forest way in NSW which has RFS
My mother loved making sure all our wills were up to date. As a last resort if everyone in the family was dead (not many of us in the family) mum wanted to leave fully equipped specialist fire trucks to our local RFS. Mum has the costs calculated and the value of the estate and when she spoke to the RFS she was informed if she left specific instructions as to what to purchase , state government actually took those items off the "we give to you ' list.
which would have made my parents bequest valueless for the RFS

In that case you also probably can’t believe the text that The Aus says went along with the shirt advert:

Publication info: The Australian ; Canberra, A.C.T. [Canberra, A.C.T]20 Dec 2019: 10.

“Sartorial satire Scott Morrison’s alleged secret Hawaiian holiday has been immortalised by clothing brand Mr Koya in a piece of sartorial satire they’re calling the “Mahalo ScoMo”, described as “an enduring combination of Hawaiian vibes, simpering leadership vacuums and the colours of an increasingly combustible Australian summer”. Featuring a smirking Prime Minister nestled within a hibiscus flower, 100 per cent of proceeds from the $72.95 Hawaiian shirt are going to volunteer firefighters. The Prime Minister’s office is still staying mum on his mystery whereabouts — which history buffs note has come just days after the 52nd anniversary of Harold Holt’s final swim... “

I can't believe those tacky shirts they are selling with the PM's face on them
