Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

But they will realize that it is not - People will still get Covid and we will not eradicate it.

The annoying thing is that Australia publicly declares it is going for suppression, not elimination. But their definition of suppression is near elimination.

What happened to flattening the curve ? Building hospital capacities to not overwhelm the health system.

As soon as we start getting cases from overseas, borders will shut again
We continue to get cases from overseas but they are in quarantine. And we are never told which country the people (and not the flight) started from.

COVID-19 will never be able to eradicate - we can only suppress and wait until there's a cure or vaccine available then we can let people to get infected since they have antibodies anyways.

We will always get cases from overseas and unfortunately there will be COVID outbreaks in 2021 in Australia and NZ once we open our borders as vaccine is delivering.

The difference, though, is that when we have vaccines and monoclonal antibodies available in 2021, most if not all patients will get recovered very soon and by then Coronavirus will be treated as only a little flu, as its always should be.

Therefore, as I always stress, we should open our borders in 2021 once we have vaccine approved and start delivering, so that we can travel again and ensure universities thrive with a flood of international students.

Sure, but we can't even get our state borders open - that has to happen first. And look what is happening there.....

Disagree in part. The 'vaccine' is being sold by Scomo and government as the silver bullet that gets us out of this pandemic + restrictions. Once of the selling points (and they will need them) will be unimpeded travel (as really '1984' over-controls could mean you need to be vaccinated to cross state borders - hope it doesn't come to that). They will need to guarantee unimpeded travel out of and back into Australia for Australian citizens. That may include COVID test prior to quick trip to Bali, one before boarding plane back here, and another on arrival, but I'm OK with that.

I would tend to agree. This whole pandemic has become quite the political show and it will end with a vaccine, regardless of how good it is.

Elimination of any virus is just about impossible but the public has been sold a story and they’re buying it. The benefit of being sold a story is they can also be sold the ending.

At the end of the day, we need to accept that it’s around for a long time. Fortunately, it’s a non-event in the vast majority of cases and hopefully a vaccine and better treatments will help those who are impacted.

Moving forward, we need to stop counting “cases” and start becoming concerned with the number of genuine deaths. Figures out of europe suggest they’re doing pretty well in that regard.

Doesn't always make sense though as they could have picked it up during any part of the journey, so origin doesn't necessarily matter.

National border is different from state borders. The State borders are determined by the state, yet the federal government can punish states in the budget. National border is the federal government issue, now they have decided to open to the Kiwis, soon they will open NSW to the Pacific and Singapore etc by Christmas or January. Other states? Kick your Premier out and open your state to NSW and you can enjoy international travel too.

I think vaccine approval is going to be earlier than you thought, especially when tonight's budget has assumed a vaccine is available in 2021, as well as Greg Hunt and various ministers have been openly optimistic about a vaccine early next year.

My worry about Australia is that if we only have 1 or 2 vaccine ordered, it will be too slow for those who want to be vaccinated in the population to be vaccinated. I think the strategies by other governments, such as Canada where they snap up a number of vaccines early is a better strategy.

With borders, I think the strategy is to delay an uncontrolled outbreak as late as possible so that when we open our borders and there's an outbreak, there would already been vaccine and/or cure available which only those who refuses one will be badly affected.

We cannot close our borders until the virus is completely eliminated from the world, as it will take a very long time which will significantly harm the country's economy and we will see a lot of people out of jobs already.

Just because politicians are optimistic and the vaccine is in the budget doesn't mean its approval is imminent or even going to happen. The US President has been saying for months a vaccine is going "to be here in weeks". He has stated that it will happen before the election - there is maybe a slim chance at a vaccine being approved prior to the election.

Now, lets say, for arguments sake a vaccine is approved this month. Do you know how long it will take to distribute? The Oxford/AZN and Pfizer vaccines need to be stored at a temperature below freezing point, and people need two jabs - a month apart. So if you think about the logistics of this, if the whole Australian population is vaccinated by the end of 2021, that would be considered a great effort.

It is also important to note that the Australian government has signed a deal to buy only the Oxford/AZN vaccine - that I'm aware. This vaccine is actually still on hold in the US after the adverse event happened about a month ago. So this vaccine may be months away.

Pie in the sky stuff. The electors will decide who gets back into Parliament, then we see who can form government

...

I strongly disagree with this and it's a fairly irresponsible thing to say. I've personally had family and friends affected by this and know people who have lost loved ones. I'm sure that there are millions and potentially billions of people who have been affected through the loss of loved ones.

While I do agree that there are governments who have severely overreacted in some aspects, this is not a "little flu". The number of deaths worldwide is past a million in less than a year. The amount of people with lung issues and other long term problems is in the millions.

It's not a "little flu" - doctors and scientists all over the world aren't all idiots in saying this is dangerous and deadly. Governments all over the world, in every region, aren't shutting down the economy just for fun.

Yes for that reason it is difficult to draw conclusions around risks associated with the country of origin for people travelling on flights that include passengers connecting from multiple countries (like flights to Australia via hubs).

Probably easier to draw conclusions from sources of foreign infections from those arriving on hub carriers in their hubs where people are unlikely to (or haven't been allowed to) transit to the flight.

Someone travelling LHR-SIN-SYD testing positive is not necessarily going to tell you about the risk of allowing UK originating pax in, as they could have mixed with travellers from Indonesia, US, South Africa, Philippines, Thailand, Japan etc on the SIN-SYD sector.

On the other hand Singapore government (as an example) , probably has much more reliable data for arrivals into the country from SQ flights, as they are not allowing people to travel on SQ SIN bound services from connecting tickets (except intra-Schengen), so much less, or in some cases (eg Australia-Singapore) practically zero people mingling with people from other countries on flights inbound to SIN.

Unfortunately they did - unbelievable.

A tad incorrect on both fronts. The Oxford vaccine trials resumed about 5 days after that incident and is actively going ahead. Also, Australia has joined a global pool of other vaccines as well

Can that be considered as Offensive? A meaning of Offensive: causing someone to feel resentful, upset, or annoyed.

And we all know the Polls get it wrong these days.

Fair enough - I was incorrect about the Australian government purchasing of only the Oxford vaccine.

However, I said the Oxford/AZN is still on hold in the US - and it still is. It has resumed in the UK and other countries, but as of October 3rd, according to the NY Times, it is still on hold in the US: Coronavirus Vaccine Tracker

No, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Personally, I'm offended by it. However, I don't know what others think. I think it's careless to say such a thing and definitely not on.

Furthermore, it is blatantly, factually incorrect.
