Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Not trying to be difficult nor querying your other figures but the percentage of people professing to be Christian in the last Census was actually 52% of the population. Around 70% in total professed to have some religious beliefs - but that figure was not just Christians.

I don’t profess to be Christian. But Christmas is special. It is more about family and being Thankful. It seems most other important rituals have been able to be observed in Australia this year but the Christian calendar (Easter and now Christmas) has not. And then there is Anzac Day.

Two favored Covid countries/destinations, Taiwan and NZ, wrapped into one (Edit: according to other news reports the NZ pilot lives in Taiwan and did a recent cargo run to US - co-crew also positive)

Taiwan reports first locally transmitted COVID-19 case since April

I hear Taiwan has one new locally acquired case (first time since march). What are the details of this case?

-World watcher

You're living up to your name here, World watcher.

Taiwan has reported its first locally transmitted case of COVID-19 since April 12, a friend of a New Zealand pilot who was confirmed to have been infected earlier this week, and is testing more than 100 contacts of the woman.

Taiwan has kept the pandemic well under control thanks to early and effective prevention methods and widespread mask wearing, with all new cases for more than the last 250 days being among travellers arriving on the island.

Lagging most Australian states by a few days, Singapore has now shut their borders to NSW to non-residents of Singapore, with effect from 23:59 on 23 Dec. Not that this is such a big deal due to Australia's travel bans and quarantine on return, but the new rules:
c. Short-term travellers holding an Air Travel Pass with travel history to NSW, Australia, within the last 14 days before departure for Singapore, will not be allowed to enter Singapore.

For residents of Singapore (Citizens, Permanent Residents, Long Term Pass Holders) who've been in NSW in previous 14 days now have to complete a 7 day self isolation at home (with electronic tracing bracelet) with a PCR test before end of isolation period. Shame Australian states couldn't be this pragmatic.

Visitors (if they get approval to leave Australia 🤣 ) and SIngapore residents from the rest of Australia can still enter Singapore without having to quarantine, with negative PCR test on arrival, provided they haven't been in NSW in the last 14 days.

NSW - the pariah state. If I was the NSW premier, I would only allow NSW residents to quarantine in Sydney...the other residents can quarantine in their own state. All the recent cases in NSW have been directly or indirectly related to a breakdown in airport / hotel quarantine.

Well I don't agree - most flights come into Sydney and I don't expect airlines would schedule additional flights to other capital cities. BUT other states should help foot the bill AND show a little more flexibility towards NSW (Sydneysiders in particular). The immediate state border closures in response to the Northern Beaches outbreak seems pretty knee-jerk to me. Surely other states can handle a case or two particularly if NSW arrivals are required to get tested.

I do wonder what the proportion of interstate travellers return via Sydney. It does seem somewhat unfair that Sydney takes on the greatest risk for the very risk adverse states yet those states then treat us like we are all diseased. Do the other states not have adequate contact tracing to handle even a couple of cases.

This has definitely made me rethink which states I would spend holidays in for the future.

The NSW Premier has stated its a 55/45 split. 55% are NSW residents.

There are risks, but also benefits to NSW in terms of hotel occupancy and employment.

Outside of VIC, no they don’t.

WA was the worst of the states being called out in the Finkel report as having ‘work to catch up on’ which was politically polite.

So strange. I felt like the qr codes for every venue appeared overnight in Sydney. Most places won't let you in until you show that each person has signed in. I'm more worried now that other states are so badly prepared so if anything happens in those states and something slips through hotel quarantine they have no second line of defense. Its really not hard to setup qr code check ins

It seems that you need the odd case here and there to bolster the system, otherwise people get complacent. The longer between cases, the more complacent. We should probably (but due to human nature certainly wouldn't) welcome the odd scare here and there - it's almost NSW's model and keeps the system engaged constantly

Well SA performed very well with their recent outbreak. They along with TAS and QLD did accept the use of the system offered by the Feds in March so not totally unprepared.
Tasmania do say they have plans for the rapid deployment of more contact tracers when needed.

Yes they got by ok (Despite the terrible communication mess) with VIC and WA support on contact tracing and VIC processed some of their testing at the peak as well.

WA was processing tests for Victoria in the days where testing numbers were high here in Melbourne as well.
