Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

The gross over reaction in WA today followed immediately by the other states slamming their borders shut over 1 community case leads me to change my prediction...I don't think our international borders will open til at least 2023 or later even with vaccinations...the virus Is mutating so current vaccines may soon be ineffective..

Eventually people will go to the library and grab a copy of “the boy who cried wolf”. Unless governments are currently burning every copy.

In how many weeks have we had the scary African strain “breakout” of quarantine and cause.... nothing.

For the fear to continue, I suspect there’s probably a few crossed fingers in government for an uncontrolled breakout

It's no surprise. The arrogant WA premier had been lecturing the other states on their handling of outbreaks for months. WA now has an outbreak (hopefully not a big one) and he really needs to stamp it out to save face and the fact that there will be an election in WA soon.

Frankly, as depressing as it is 2023 will probably be the year international tourism will start to kick off again (just imagine the crowds). Not only do we in Australia need to have very high vaccination numbers, we also need to make sure the rest of the world does and continues to take the vaccination every half year to a year. This virus could be with us all decade running rampant in all sorts of mutated forms. The decade will be defined by the virus and will change the world and international travel.

A vaccine doesn't kill the virus, it will still enter our bodies and we will still pass it onto others. It's important that everybody takes the vaccine and I think most will once they realise they will most likely be restricted from doing things like flying overseas or going on a cruise etc.

It seems based on media reports of an upcoming speech by Morrison today that international travel restrictions and hotel quarantine will remain in place throughout this year.
Nooooooo

I was really hoping to see my boy sometime this year - it's already been more than a year and I am feeling very low about this.

It will take the year to get everyone immunised so if thats the case it isnt surprising. I'd expect progress towards November about overseas travel but it will come will many provisos, including vaccination, PCR testing and likely quarantine at home if vaccinated.

Excerpt this morning from Hunt:
But what does it mean for overseas travel and hotel quarantine? Health Minister Greg Hunt confirms the first step is getting the country vaccinated.

“We recognise that safe and effective vaccines are an important step to free movement within Australia and enable us to work towards international travel,’’ he told news.com.au.

“Achieving community protection through immunisation would improve the lives of many Australians.

“The Australian Government may consider establishing new entry requirements for incoming travellers. There has been no decision to mandate vaccination for all arriving travellers to date.”

If they can manage to open borders early next year, I will be happy. Certainly not expecting it this year (not sure what green stuff Qantas was smoking)

Take my advice and assume borders not opening till 2022.

I haven't seen my fiance since Feb 2021 and in March, I was hoping June, then Sep, then Dec, then March. This was doing my head in as every 3 months I was hoping that the travel ban would not get extended. I felt trapped. I am quite ambitious career wise and wanted to change my job but kept on holding off due to the 'maybe' aspect of going overseas for 3 months plus.

But on Jan., i decided not to hope anymore and instantly, my head felt clear and felt like I wasn't trapped anymore. Felt free, changed to a better job and much happier now.

Yes, taking 2022 will be a shock and make you feel depressed for maybe a few days but then you get over and can get on with life

I'm planning on being at Son's wedding in the UK in mid 2022! I can wait that long.

I was supposed to get married Sep 2021. That is obviously not happening anymore.
And you are not alone. Sad times. Friends of ours have a son in US. He married at the Registry Office last February and his Mum managed to get there (only witnesses at the ceremony, no guests) just before our border closed, with the intention of having a family wedding celebration in Hawaii last September. That got canned obviously so the bride transferred it to this September also in Hawaii. It will break her heart to cancel again.

You know what is coming next from WA unfortunately....

'We can't manage hotel quarantine, stop all overseas arrivals'

Just waiting for it....

1 case, and they defended their record and setting up of daily testing for most of yesterday's press conference

asking to stop would be an admission of defeat that the government probably can't (optically) afford

though having spoken to family and friends over there, I think the sentiment about "stopping people from elsewhere coming here" is a lot bigger than in other parts of the country (that's the isolation effect)

Haven't caught much media today. Did this happen?

So 2 not so good bits of news. Two candidates for travel bubbles have had outbreaks.
First Taiwan whose outbreak began in a hospital.index patient was a doctor.Unfortunately has led to their 8th death.

The other country is Vietnam.Though they are also now testing their own vaccines.

But a bit of better news. The results with the Pfizer vaccine in Israel have been excellent.

Those results from Israel are promising. I would say in the next 4-5 weeks we should have more information and data from Israel as they have given first doses to about 53% of the population now. Similarly, I would expect in the UK we should also get some good data at the end of February as 9 million people in the UK have been vaccinated as of 30th of January.

I really think it'll be a case of most of europe / usa vaccinated and returning to normal while we are clown-car-ing around shutting down states over 2 or 3 cases. I fully expect all my mates in the uk to be back at work and out in bars while our border is firmly locked, it just doesnt feel like a priority or a concern to them.

I agree with you, and eventually common sense will prevail. As stated prior, I reckon European summer in 2022 will be bursting at the seams, and we will possibly be partially open(ish) with everyone vaccinated, multiple testing, hotel or home quaratine on return and begging to get government pass to visit our desired location.
