There is no indication that Australia will purse a different strategy once the vaccines are rolled out

That is the common sense approach - eliminate now until everyone is protected. then open up gradually irrespective of case numbers.

But common sense and politics do not go hand in hand here

You and me know that. And it makes sense.

But do our obnoxious premiers care and have that common sense ? Evidence so far suggests they do not

Reckon you will find that is exactly the case.

If major airport owners go bust I don't see thousands of jobs being lost.It will be very likely that in the first instance the government takes over the International Terminals.That usually means more jobs not less.

Australia is quite willing to have open borders even though every year we have a flu season and every few years we have a worse season with a 1000 or more deaths.Remember that this is with a vaccine that at times is only ~ 40% efficient and doesn't reach 90%.

So if we find the current Covid vaccines are 70% efficient and although still there will be a few thousand Covid cases the mortality is such that less than a thousand die per year in Australia just why should that be different from the pre Covid travel era when the flu was doing the same?If 1000 did die from covid per year it is likely the flu deaths will be a lot lower and it may turn out to be not many more deaths from Flu + Covid as there was for flu alone.

So the evidence is not in.

As I said, I've had several fights already this morning (pre-6am!) with mates back home who pretty much share the same mindset / mentality as MM. Very unfortunate. I still love them as mates, but gosh they make me furious sometimes!

The gross over reaction in WA today followed immediately by the other states slamming their borders shut over 1 community case leads me to change my prediction...I don't think our international borders will open til at least 2023 or later even with vaccinations...the virus Is mutating so current vaccines may soon be ineffective..

Still early days. 6-12 months time we'll have amazon/german/hungarian/trump/new york/kardashian strains and the media will have their frenzy too.

European summer bursting at the seams in mid 2022, and hopefully Australia follow suit. Still betting on March 2022, maybe a fraction later, but we won't have to wait until 2023.
