Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Thanks for posting link. As someone who started visiting Bali in 1991, I have seen first hand the total destruction of over tourism to this magical island. Let’s hope the lessons are learned but sadly I’m not optimistic.
People dont learn. In 4 years the FIFOs and youngins will be going to Bali 8 times a year and drinking and partying as prior.

yea the money is just too disproportionate to what they can generate through other means currently, they will be ramming as many heavy drinking tourists in at the first opportunity, perhaps they might institute something to re-direct the money in a more effective way?

If they would consider letting Singaporeans in who are vaccinated without quarantine, it implies that they trust that the jab prevents transmission

Looks like a way to outsource quarantine requirements. In any case, it would give the option of removing the travel ban and letting travel in and out if people have the money and time to quarantine in Singapore.

Qantas trials of the vaccine e-passport which is expected to be required by many countries and airlines have started, another step towards international flights inches closer...

Good to see QF do this. The only issue is governments accepting this. That starts with governments actually genuinely wanting international travel to restart: the Australian government clearly doesn't want or care about international travel.

A bubble between Australia and NZ should have occurred by now, and the chances of it happening are slim to none. I can't see this happening in 2021.

The problem with that is NZ PM who closes borders as soon as someone sneezes. In that scenario, Australia was good to go but NZ was too chicken.

Singapore is a lot more keen than NZ and actually opened to Australia last year. So it was Australia holding up the bubble and if Scomo is keen, it will happen.

After reading the article I believe it's just a method the government is using to be able to bring in foreign students without the locals being able to complain. Australians can only go if we have had the vaccination, and given the snail's pace at which that is proceeding, by implementation time only eligible people are like to be elderly and health compromised. So is it really a travel bubble or just the illusion of one?

Something that has been bugging me:

PM says the new 12 weeks mandatory gap between jabs is effectively pushing the 'population covered' date out by 2 months.
but ....
If you are waiting 12 weeks instead of 3/4 then well before October you have a bunch of '2nd jabs' that you would have been providing that wont be provided until 8/9 weeks after when you were planning to supply it ... ie ... FIRST doses can be pulled forward as there is more avail due to not doing the SECOND doses until later.

basically its all spin, i hate pollies and i'm cancelling my trip for my parents 75th and 70th birthdays in June and i'm pissed off

Every state premier is just as bad as the NZ PM, if not worse, apart from Gladys Berejiklian. So I don't see how there is going to be an agreement to let in Singaporeans quarantine free when states close borders to each other at the drop of a hat and open up after 4 weeks of 0-covid cases. And as mentioned before, the federal government don't seem to have any interest in this anyway.

Further to this, how is the government going to prove that someone has been in Singapore for at least two weeks prior to departing for Australia? I know it can be done, but it's not like you can just check it easily. IMO, one of two things will happen:

- The bubble will start and fall over in a heap within days or weeks; or
- This won't happen till late 2022.

Singapore is a lot more keen than NZ and actually opened to Australia last year. So it was Australia holding up the bubble and if Scomo is keen, it will happen.

I don't believe Scomo is remotely keen. This is a good headline. Just like every other headline we have had similar to this in the past 6 - 9 months.

The issue right now is Australians don't really care about travelling, and government knows that. There are many here that want borders to open, some of us desperate for this to happen, however, the truth is overall, the majority of the Australian population don't. This is actually a great article on this:

I'm just as furious as you. The government is clearly showing no interest in international travel restarting anytime soon. It's pathetic. We'd be lucky if Australia gets all of its population vaccinated by mid-2022, and the politicians are just fine with that it seems.

I'd love to travel overseas in June/July, but I'm far from certain that anyone in phase 2b will have even had the first jab in July. If I can't travel in June/July that pushes back my travel plans significantly, not that I expected to be allowed to travel then. However, if I can't travel at the end of year and the only reason is because of not being able to get the vaccine yet I'll be very disappointed.

Just look at WA for instance. A state government that won the last election with a landslide swing towards them, just had another landslide swing towards it last night on the back of its tough state border stance. State border closures are sadly popular.

The federal government has been clear from the start that they don't want state border closures, but that does appear to be hypocritical when one considers their completely opposite stance on international borders notwithstanding that the risk of virus spread is far greater with international travel.

This shouldn’t be too difficult - like NZ currently - you could have quarantine free flights and flights for those “transmitting” and require that the airlines simply don’t allow transit passengers to join the flight. They would then only allow passengers to join the quarantine free flight if they’ve been in Singapore for at least two weeks. If not then they can travel but only on flights that would lead them straight into 14 days quarantine.

And for the quarantine free flights you might possibly do a COVID test at the airport (either for everyone or a random sample or if they have a temperature or other possible COVID symptoms) and ask them to self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.

I think their point is that it is the international borders that are doing all the heavy lifting of keeping Covid at bay in Australia. The effect of the state borders is quite small in comparison.

For whatever reason, the electors seem to think it is the state borders that are keeping them safe. However, for the most part they could be removed (or at least used in a more nuanced way), and we'd be in much the same place.

There may be more like me. I am not jumping up and down NOW because I can't go where I want to go because the overseas countries are also either closed (Indonesia, Fiji) or extremely restricted activities (Turkey). But when I start seeing USA/UK/Europeans traveling freely, countries open up and we are still stuck here is when I will start getting more involved in protests/demanding open borders with like-minded people/groups.

The difference that IS going to occur in those timelines is because of actions (vaccines) being done NOW, or as the case may be, not being done now. your protests in 6 months will complaints in months will be baseless. i'm still annoyed that the press arent pushing scomo on the timeframe of doing first dose's first if second doses are being pushed

He did get a grilling this morning. In reality it is each state who has to manage the system though. WA seems to be romping it in.
